Chatel Mountain Style 2011 - Practice Day

Jul 2, 2011
by Devon Balet
The Chatel Mountain Style is the most unique FMB event of the year and the only big mountain comp in the FMB this year. Riders from around the world made their way to Chatel France to see what they could do with "The Face". The 300 meter long course is insanely steep with many new features for the year. Riders are finding that pedaling is not very necessary for this course. "You go from zero to 100 in no time around here," said Transition rider Nick Simcik.

The day opened up with some last minute fine tuning on the course. While course builders Romo and Sebi did an amazing job of building the new course some things always need a bit of work come contest time. In classic Berrecloth style, Darren hopped into a mini back ho and started digging away at one particularly problematic spot, the road gap at the top of the course. With warm temps, sunny skies and a mild breeze, the course is shaping up nicely for today's seating competition, the all in finals will go off tomorrow. Until then, enjoy some video and photos from beautiful Chatel France. Stay tuned for more!

Easily the best comp of the year. Even better than rampage.

Anyone else find this ironic? The ONLY big mountain comp in the F(freeride)MB? Something's wrong here...Bit of a misnomer, no? I don't really see dirtjumping as freeriding...but um...ok Razz
Looks like nothing but DH bikes, wonder if anyone will be runnign a short travel?...I'd hate to crash with all those rocks
And no, It's not better than the rampage! Wink

Awesome stuff Nick and Devon. This is the best info I have seen on this event with out being there in person. There needs to be more events like this one. It is a complete crossover from Big Mountain skiing and snow boarding which mountain biking is in my book, at least "free-ride" mountain biking that is.

Definitely needs to be more events like this one! Its such a sick and fun course!

I'd hit one of those monsters and probably end up in Chatel cemetery.

The biggest of the two northshores (look the photo with Kyle Strait)generates a drop of 12 meters, and during the last comp' in 2010, only 3 riders (monsters) used it at the beginning (Semeniuk, Sorge & Berrecloth)!
The second drop represents 8 meters :-D and even the am' riders (40% of competitors each year in average) are forced to take one of these two drops :-s

I believe the Whistler Crankworx is the best event of the year, so stoked for that!
  • 6 3
Thats a different kind of event tho really , crankworxs is BMX for hacks , this is a mountain bike event.
  • 7 0
^^ how is crankworxs for BMX... the garbo dh?? theres 1 BMX event also the slopestlye, best trick, canadian open, garbonzo dh, the xc, duel salom. i think crankworxs qualifies for a mountain bike event.

Chatel and Cranworx are both great events, but overall Whistler is where it's at with comps in my opinion.
