On the Sunday following the finals at the 2011 Claymore Challenge, Highland Mountain Bike Park hosted it's first (of hopefully MANY) Battle of Hellion race! Pros ran a single run qualifier first, and then went up against 5 other riders per heat in a 6-man battle down Highland's infamous Hellion downhill jump trail.
I'm really sad I missed this year's because of this event. Congrats to the local ripper, Ben Moody, for his 3rd place finish! That guy is an insaniac on his rig.
Amazing trail. Amazing event at an absolutely amazing mountain. Thanks mark. Oh yah. Don't forget about Justin Martin. He came out of now where to take 5th in a race against pros.
honestly being at the race and watching the technical passes that the riders did during the race shows just how awesome this event was. i am slightly disappointed in the video of it but hey they didn't have too many cameras rolling and doesn't show the true MTB side of the event but i hope to see some of the rider's goPro videos because some riders took lines that surprised us all and there were some insane passes.
How long was the track, as the vid made it look fairly short and tame? Looked just like a 4x race with 6 people on a smooth track, suprised no-one raced their hardtails...
Cool idea and format but it needs to be done on a MTB track rather then a BMX track , it needs stuff thats more tech so it doesnt end up with follow the leader
I heard from a few riders that there was actually some pretty good passes down on the bottom section of the course. The last riding clip was the mens final heat, George Ryan was in last place near the top and finished 2nd so he must have done something other than following the leader
Run enough of those style races and guys will be using hardtails. Looks like fun but no different terrain than the 4x tracks people complain about. I can hear the negative comments now, too smooth, too BMX like, its dead, blah blah blah...
Now that is right up my street!
Bombing a downhill run with 5 other dudes trying to pass you and cut you up....most definitely!
I gotta get myself to one of those events....brilliant!
Honestly Highland is so cool. Given out Claymores and Shields as prizes. I think the winner of every competitive sports event should get at least some sort of medevil battle equipment!
