That's the one major thing that scares me about urban dh is tire blowouts and crashing into hard concrete, I much rather have a tire blowout and crash into nice dirtt..
I think these races are likely to do more harm than good in the long run. It was one thing when they were for fun but now that it is a championship guys are going to take bigger risks. A guy i know hucked off a set of stairs and hit a bollard on landing. Had his spleen removed and a couple of months in the hospital. Now i know that can happen in dh too but there are a lot less hard objects to smash into.
@z05m: Nah it's part of the sport: no risk, no fun ) @SirWonky: even the youtube title for the video says his tyre blew and you can hear the explosion. Also he was nowhere near something with his handlebars when he fell.
Puts on shoe and says "ya I'm ok." Ya man!!!, glad ur ok. enduro? really come on have you seen the stairs sets? urban enduro would be on the streets not the stairs
On asphalt or concrete you slide but on dirt you stop much more abrubptly increasing your chance of breaking bones though I know its probably a different situation falling on stairs.
^ and also less sliding doesn't necessarily mean more broken bones... forward momentum dispersing impacts really only matters on the landing of jumps/drops.
Both have their ups and downs looking at how you fall. As a street rider I prefer to fall on concrete because I hate having dirt in my wounds (my fear is reasonable tho, someone very close to me who is a DH dirt almost passed away by Tetanus after crashing on a DH and getting dirt in his wounds, if he'd be at the doctor one hour later the anti-posion wouldn't have worked in time and he would not be here anymore).
But also a thing you need to realise is that on different types of grounds you need to fall in different ways. For example when dirt riders fall, they roll down the landing and they are okay. If a dirt rider crashes on street he's used to rolling out, and he'll get all bruised up and get wounds everywhere due to the rough ground. But when I ride street I just jump off my bike and land on both of my feet like nothing happened. But if I ride dirt and try to fall the same way, it just doesn't work due to the much harder impact, and that's why I always get hurt riding dirt and nearly never get hurt while riding street, because I've teached myself to bail everywhere the same way I do as on street.
lol, Go Pro crash test: ragdoll on concrete: Pass.
Glad to see he's okay, all those metel barrier's could add to a nasty crash at high speed if you got a limb wedged in there, maybe they should cover them with plastic sheet for advertising or something.
Also love the medic, " take you helemet off, no, okay you go again" he's obviously a mtbr.
Yeah, I loved the medic's comment too ! I somehow think you're not allowed to walk back up and start again Unless he was asking if he wanted to carry on to the bottom ?
It was a shame, he is one of my favorite riders, and I got to meet him and photograph him in his last event in Prague, sick rider. He was on his full suspension bikes, he should have taken his HT and kick ass like in Slovakia.
Not that this issue contributed to his crash, but I wonder if an XC tread pattern with a DH-type sidewall would be better for Urban DH. Seems like a tough casing with low tread would be perfect for smooth city surfaces with high impact.
Step 2: DOUBLE CHECK TO MAKE SURE THE LOGO IS SHOWING
Just kidding...... Crash sounded pretty nasty, did the rim explode too or was it just the tyre???
Glad he managed to roll on landing and not hurt himself too much.

I wish there was another view because the initial explosion sounded so gnarly.

hope he's ok!
@Hound I think he just blew it out and then it was just rim on concrete which would have been like riding on ice at that speed.

But seriously good thing he's OK!
But why always after something like this ppl loose one shoe?
