Video: Curtis Keene Shreds Some of BC's Best MTB Trails

Jul 11, 2013
by Red Bull Bike

On a break between Enduro World Series races, Santa Monica-based Curtis Keene took a trip up to western Canada with his Enduro 29 for a sampling of the area's well-known trails. Watch him rip down some of BC's mountainous landscape in the video above.

Keene explored the local scenes in Vancouver, Squamish and Whistler, while traveling along the "Sea to Sky Corridor" following highway 99. For more on Curtis check out RedBull.com/bike

well hes putting that bike through its paces!!!

Its videos like that that make me question owning an 8" bike unless you're racing world.......... Wait I'm selling my 450 for an "enduro" bike for that reason Wink little bikes shred hard, tell your friends!

Oh and that video got me more stoked to ride than anything I've seen in ages!

The Enduro 29 opened up a whole new world of 29er awesomeness
  • 5 2
Yup it seems bloody amazing. Look how those short chainsays allow to pop it off everything like a 26er. Put some cabon wheels on it, to minimize inertia and you can whip it. If I ever move to bigger mountains one day, I'd buy that without a shadow of a doubt. And Curtis is such great rider I always enjoy watching him ride, aggro power-house style

 youre a queer.

Neither I am proud nor I am ashamed...

The short chainstays aren't the reason it pops, it's the rider.

No no no, I've been told so many times that certain products and solutions give the rider certain advantage, like 650b will help you win an Enduro race, that I allow myself to hold it as my theory that Curtis jumps so much and so far on a 29er thanks to stays shorter by a almost an inch than any other 29er with that travel.

And for real, I own two xc hardtails, one with 420 stays and one with 405 and the latter is much easier to pop, bunny hop and manual, in general: to keep that front wheel up. And I refuse to go into details why is that logical.

I can only honestly agree with you by saying that mr Keene could probably pop a Wallmart cart of Sarah Jessica Parkers broken nail and clear Hudson river with "Sex in the city" DVD held between his muscular butt cheeks withou dropping it.
  • 2 1
I've ridden a few 29ers and the enduro 29er rides like none of them its so easy to pop off jumps and manual compared to any other 29er I've ridden

WAKI spends more time on pinkbike talking about bikes and fapping then riding them

If Curtis Keene DOES NOT boost 29er sales for Specialized, I do not know what will.
  • 3 1
 27.5....I'm kidding!

Haha! Seriously how the hell did you catch that, I had to replay that section 3 times before I saw that squirrel.

Curtis was coming a him like a freight train........and he FLEW THE F*CK OUT OF THERE!!!! HAHA

Except he's on a 29er for the race season and shredding hard and if he really didn't like it he probably wouldn't be riding it....... Funny how narrow minded most of mtn bike world is. There's obviously a legit reason why so many brands back 29ers and are constantly evolving an making them more slack, longer travel, and thus more shreddable. Big wheels roll faster kids! Unless you're racing dh you can ride any bike with any wheel size almost anywhere. It all depends on your skill and commitment level. I live in North Vancouver and ride my Bandit 29er on basically everything here including the trails I shuttle on my Tr 450 and i feel like most of the trails I'm quicker on a shorter travel bike. I also have more fun cause short travel bikes find air everywhere and what's riding if it's not playful.

rode a 29'er enduro the first time the other night... and I walked pieces of DH sections that I warp speed into on my 26'er 6 inch bike. Just too scary. I'd like to accept 29'ers and be accepting to those who want to ride them.. but the industry is forcing people like me who's totally happy on his 26'er to ride something different. That's why the fight and the narrow mindness. 29'ers are for those who don't have much skill and just want to monster truck everything... or those like you that can just shred anything. leave 26'ers for us in the middle that just want to have fun. A bike is a toy lets not forget. Be open minded and accept the 26'er people.
  • 10 2
theyre forcing nothing, the enduro still comes in a 26. and your too scared to ride gnarly sections because you have yet to become one with the 29. the more you ride it the more comfortable it is.
  • 7 1
@pushingbroom...that's not a bike problem, that's a you problem. Step your game up.
  • 3 1
its ur choice to ride watever. just dont be ignorant with some dumb ass comments like most 29er haters. step your game up lol
  • 4 0
It was good to see someone shred a 29er, even if at some crazy red bull resolution, was like watching a video from 10 years ago.
The part where he pedalled out of a corner at some crazy cadence that you would see out the gate on a bmx!
Why lift the front wheel all the time? I ride with faster riders than him on a trail bike from time to time and they dont do that. Seems gwin does it on his dh spec too, but didnt on the trek. Is this a spec thing?
  • 3 0
Should add, one of my pals has a stumpy and he shreds hard on it. It is a fast bike with a 160 fork up front, we are pretty much the same speed on the enduro bikes, when the dh bike comes out... there is no competition between a trail bike and a dh bike for speed.
  • 2 0
Yep the trail bike destroys the DH bike on the flat and climbs.
  • 1 0
 Haha! No comparison!!
  • 1 0
check it out on Youtube. The quality is perfect there.
  • 7 2
Wow, amazing riding. I wouldn't have guessed it's a 29er based on the riding style.
  • 3 0
WOW!!!! Shredding a 29er at the Bike Park!!! Love it
  • 11 5
Never understood the hate on 29ers. It's a wheel on a bike and it rolls. In some cases like the Enduro, it rolls really well. What's the problem again? Oh yeah, I forgot, should just turn my brain completely off and hate it 'cause it's a 29er. Everyone knows you can't shred on a 29er. Mr. Keene is not shredding on a 29er, it's must be CGI and it's physically impossible 'cause It's all about the tools and not the rider, right?

Really felt the sense of speed watching this, great edit, left me wanting more .. and that 'duro 29 is dope.
  • 1 0
I found right away on my 29er it made easy work of the steep technical dh style stuff but I did have to learn all over how to jump bigger wheels lol captain snappy I own a 26 and 29 so I would say I'm definitely open minded. The industry isn't forcing anything on you it's merely giving people options. 26 is the most dominately made wheel size and i dont for see that changing. I'll always own both because why not? 29er for trail and 26 for the rest. We all need to be open minded and let people like what they like and talk about it how they please. All that matters is you're on 2 wheels having a blast!
  • 1 0
I meant to direct at pushingbroom not captain snappy lol either way ride bikes and love them all!
  • 1 0
Seriously I don't think I've ever seen someone shred a 29er like this in a video before every other one I've seen they look slow but this is soo sick makes me wanna ride right now! and that Enduro is dead sexy I'll take one!!
  • 2 0
I got the comp version the other week. It feels great. Ride it for a week and then jump on a 26er. The 26er feels like a BMx bike. This bike is the future. Not that it makes me ride anything like that.
  • 1 0
Only my local trails I'm faster on my trail bike but riding bike park tech ofcourse a dh bike is faster. On trails like dirt merchant and stuff in this video you don't need a dh bike to shred hard cause it's about flow and not flat out pinned dh gear speed. Jump/flow trails are just as fun and shreddable on little bikes.
  • 1 0
I saw the tittle and description on the home page and ignored the video and came straight to the comments. Yup predictable. Then I watched the video - oh yeah he's completely pinned.

I don't like riding 29r's personally at this point in life, BUT it doesn't mean they don't rip and it doesn't mean they aren't legit. Will I ever ride em? Maybe, The move to aggressive trail, Enduro - gravity oriented 29ers continues to grow. I actually might try the 27 format first as I like a lot of what I see there.

Is the industry forcing the move to the larger wheel formats? Yes and no. The industry could get ugly if it pulled support by stopping all manufacturing of 26" parts, rims, tires, etc. But the sheer mass of 26" bikes out in the market means there are years and years to come where 26" will be a viable revenue source. Ont the other hand the hyperbole and marketing constantly being thrown in consumers' faces make it appear that the ONLY option is the big wheeled option. Remember Richard Cunningham saying that anyone not riding a larger wheeled bike would need to give a reason for riding an inferior technology (I am summarizing)? Continue to throw garbage out like that and it makes it look exactly like we are being forced to move to larger wheels. But we're not and everyone has a choice on what they ride and how they ride it.

Will it change? Likely, 27.5 is a great option and great way for the hardcore 26" crowd to wrap their minds around the big wheel concept and like I said I like everything I am hearing about the 27.5 format. To me it means I would own a super aggressive 27.5 bike to match my 2012 Scapegoat setup (or just convert it to 27.5 maybe) and then own an aggressive trail ride in the 29er format, say like the Transition Bandit or Banshee Prime.

love this….now I can tell all my friends who are ragging on me for riding an enduro at Whistler to back off. The bike is far beyond capable….now if I only had his speed…sigh
  • 1 0
Great video. Clearly spec told him to make it look really "pop-y" . I am sure it would be a fun bike, I would like to try it but its got enduro written on it and as an enduro race bike it is just not competitive on weight. My 26 inch 155 mm travel aluminium bike is 3lb s lighter ! The enduro 29er is just too heavy to be a serious contender for enduro racing.
I will wait for the 2015 version that is "10% lighter and 30% stiffer! "
  • 4 0
 redefining the 29er right there
  • 5 1
i think they need to start giving points for style in enduro events
