Day 3 - 2013 World Champs - South Africa

Aug 30, 2013
by Nathan Hughes
Hey ma bru, howzit? All good yah? Well the riders hope for the affirmative because after today all they have left is (ridiculously) 2 half hour sessions. One is at 7am tomorrow morning and the other shortly before final runs on Sunday. The 'monster' 3 hour sesh today was mobbed by an albeit efficient, but inevitably lagging shuttle system and inconceivably... RAIN. Liquid has continued to appear from above all night and that will mean the ice rink effect if there's been too much or perfect tack if dosed correctly. Whatever the case, here's the day's finest, totes OMG moments... You do only YOLO once people.

Yesterday's gorgeous clear sunrise over the course was slightly modified today. The views still go on for days, but the weather has officially moved in.

Sic Mic relaxed and ready to throw down come race day.

World Champs 2013 Day 3
A moment of calm before some furious riding out there today from Gee, smashing laps on repeat off the shuttle. He was only a second off the pace last year and is at his career strongest right now.

The number one plate acts as a vertical stripe and is therefore slimming. It ll be the new hot look for someone else on Sunday unless Morganne can fight them off.

She's back...and her riding ain't whack. Ms Hannah shredded this place to victory last year and looked fully rad this arvo.

Carpenter was 2nd behind Tracey here last season and hit 3rd at the champs rolling hard all day today she s a good pick.

Spanner in the works though... It's healthy missy Atherton on 3 world cup wins out of 4 this season.

Greg Minnaar. You can tell whenever he is on track, because the cheering gets ratcheted up quite a few notches. Here he jumps into the open section above the gulley.

Andrew Neethling is giving it everything he's got this week in practice. The South African World Cup vet has the lungs and legs to do well here and could surprise quite a few... 8th last year afterall.

World Champs 2013 Day 3
If he doesn't win, he comes 2nd. Greg's set the standard here in the 3 world cups PMB has hosted, but you can bet he's upped the anti still further this time. It would take a real binge on the biltong tomorrow night to slow him down.

Jared Graves is also a major contender for worlds biggest calves.
  • 11 2
Calves so strong they could crush an infant.

Powerful enough to run a nuclear power plant which would then run Europe

My pick for top three. Smith, Graves, Minnar
  • 31 10
Dont get me wrong gwin hasn't been him self this season but for some reason I got a feeling he is going to be shutting all his haters up. So I think I'm going 1.gwin 2.gee 3.smith
  • 24 6
I can see gwin sneaking into the top spot but can't see anyone beating stevie right now
  • 17 3
 Minnaar, Gee, Smith, Hill, Graves
  • 7 1
He did well at MSA, but realistically the top three matter here and I dont think he has the fitness like Gee, Smith and Minnaar. My dark horse is Graves.
  • 63 6
Semenuk, Pilgrim, Granieri C'MON SEMENUK!!! Make it three in a row!!!

  • 5 3
 Sic Mic 4 President
  • 2 1
I think you people are forgetting the energy that a loud crowd gives you, and they go crazy for Minnar in SA. So, Minnar, Graves, Smith, Hill. and i jus want Rachel to win the womens.
  • 1 0
 1st Hill 2nd Minnaar 3rd Graves 4th Gee 5th Hart
  • 4 0
Gee. Gee. Gee. Rach. Rach. ...
  • 3 3
I can't see Graves winning it because I don't think he has quite the speed required in the rough stuff. I forgot about Sick Mick though, he could easily get on the podium too with his demon power. And don't count out Gwin. He's not had a great year but he's not shit either. He's been close on a couple of occasions this year (on time I mean) and look what happened the last two visits to PMB. Yes, the Demo is a shit bike, but this course is more about trying to rip your cranks off all the way down.

Shit, I just read on Dirt that the top 3 in timed practice were

1. Smiffy (650b)
2. Ropelato (29)
3. Gee Affy (26)

Proof, if any more were really required, that 650b is The Future TM.

you honestly think that it all boils down to mere wheel size? The numbers of variable is too large to be able to say that for example, had Gee ridden on larger wheels, it would have put him on top.

Go Graves! Thanks for the top notch pics PB!

I've got a feeling that there could be some surprising faces on the podium. For some weird reason I want a 29er to win just so I can watch the chaos ensue.

Ropaleto on a 9er and Graves on a single crown enduro bike....love to see one of them on the steps.
  • 8 0
would love to see greg win on home soil
  • 3 0
My bet is for GRAVES too. After so many enduro races at his back and all his experience in riding "small" 4x bikes I'm sure he will perform brilliantly on his Enduro carbon Yeti.
  • 4 0
Will be interested to see if Smith still has the dropper post tomorrow. Seems to have it in these pics.
  • 1 1
He'll have it on tomorrow. Given his bike choice (proto made with less travel for pedaling) he's all about going mach 5 in the pedally bits so having the saddle up is key.

Photo of Beer is a winner.

Amazing coverage as usual PB! Keeps me coming back for more on a regular basis.
  • 2 1
I have a gut feeling there is going to be another "THIRION PHENOMENON" this Sunday. And no its not gonna be Remi.. Maybe someone else (outside the top 5) is going to win it. It might be Hannah or Graves. Cant wait!!
  • 2 2
It's all about big wheels on this course - and being clipped in. That's reality - no peddeling efficiency on flats, no upward pull or side push. Fact:: at the same speeds a larger diameter wheel can cover more ground than a smaller one (which would need more rotations (ie speed) to equal the distance of the larger wheel.) Now put the bigger wheel under Stevie - game over. They all need to equalize on this course. The fitness of the top guys will be seperated by their wheel choice.

mmm,,, 1st Smith,,2dn. Hannanh,,3rd Hill , now for the the remaing, Hart is in on the top 10,,,he is the sleeping Giant,, Gwin is in,,,though watch out for a suprise , after reading an watching all the videos and seeing all the positive I have to say Gerad Graves might just be the Cinderella storie of the Worlds this year,,,and the debate goes on,, 650 b's , 29 yers or the 26 will still win over all...We shall see but in my eyes I like DH on the 26 ,,,just get the shit kicked out of you ....

Danny Hart!!! Danny Hart!!! Danny Hart!!!!!!! Yeah.... He's not going to win.... Sam and Gee will tie, then have to duke it out in a death match on Monday morning...

Rachel is going to kill it tomorrow, fastest by 16 in practice!? Gonna win by 8 I reckon. I'd love Stevie to win but that home crowd is gonna power Greg to top spot.
