The Devinci Log Jam (and Fiona) Road Trip - Day 1

May 19, 2007
by Tyler Maine
The Devinci Log Jam was originally me & Kinrade’s idea, basically if you rode a Devinci, you are in. So we had Ross the potty mouthed Irish dude, Fiona, who I called to say good luck in Port Alberni and then all of a sudden she was coming, (that is where the log jam got broken up), me and Mike. The idea is to ride our bikes in Kamloops, Kelowna and Penticton over the next 4-5 days, pretty standard road trip stuff. Here is how the first day unfolded:With all road trips, the set schedule changes from hour to hour, so by keeping things in terms of where we “need” to be to a minimum we are able to keep ourselves from stressing on the small details. So I get an email from Fiona-“pick me up at 8:30 pm from the ferry at Horseshoe bay and let’s get the trip rolling.” I get there at 8:20 thinking I should learn to be early on occasion (not a Tyler trait by any means), but as the ferry would have it I could have been late. Around 9:30pm the ferry finally docks and off rolls FGT and her sick new pimped out Devinci Wilson. Load and hit the road.

A quick stop in Chilliwack to grab all my gear that I’d left there in a pile at the door of the Pinkbike HQ and we were Kamloops bound. Yep it was now 11:12pm and we were hoping to be at Kinrade’s by 2 am. Roll into Kinrade’s pad at 1:52 am and straight to sleep-we gots biking to do in the morning.

So we started out at Hello Toast for some eats before hitting up the trails. We are still only three riders in our group as the potty mouthed Irish lad has yet to arrive from his work up north in Fort Mac, Alberta. Ross who is making his own way to Kamloops has still not arrived due to the fact that his flights have been delayed at least a few times, but we have been texting him to let him know how freaken sweet the trails are.
I think his last reply was along the lines of “oh for Jazus, and all I got up here to keep me happy is Budgie! See ya soon-I hope”.

After the wake up/warm up ride on Rio, I made a stop at the Bicycle Café where I begged (haha not really) Taylor to bleed my El Caminos. Despite the look of horror on his face, he did a grand job and I was back to feeling sorta safe again. Thanks a ton Taylor! Now we are Harper bound!

We went and picked up the motor bike to ease the shuttling of Harper. Mike was on a time restraint, as he was heading up to Adam’s lake to spend some quality time with his girl who is camping out in the bush (tree planting up there)- (it’s all about maintenance). After Mike B-lined it out of there FGT and I did one more run on the great network of trails up on Harper. Without having someone to follow in on the jumps (cause I don’t fly), Fiona soon found herself in an awkward bar hump to disaster as she over shot a dirt to wood gapper resulting a crazy summersault, first crash of the weekend, yahoo. Time to slow it down there FGT, its only day one.

I dropped FGT back off at the pad and headed up to my good friend Matt’s place to see about recruiting a new rider for the team. Yup we start ‘em young.

See ya’ll tomorrow!

Nate we have had to split our little group up this morning as a truck died and so 3 of us are in Kamloops still while 2 headed to Freedom in Penticton for a bit. We'll all be in Penticton tonight and tomorrow-head on down there.
