Dirt Jumps on a Barge - Brandon Semenuk wins Jump Ship

Jun 13, 2011
by Ian Hylands
Remember the section in NWD where they floated around San Francisco Harbor on barge with dirt jumps? Brandon Semenuk was part of that, and coincidentally he just won Jump Ship in Victoria. Dirt Jumps on a barge again. That's where the similarity really ends though, because while they both featured floating dirt jumps they were really entirely different creatures. The Hell Barge featured in NWD was a giant barge with huge jumps that was pushed around San Francisco Harbor by a couple of tugboats, while the guys were riding. Or trying to ride a lot of the time. As the Hell Barge was moved around it pitched and yawed a bit as boats tend to do, and that combined with the wind made everything a little interesting. Imagine hitting a lip and being blown a little in the air, only to look down and see the landing moving sideways away from you. Hell Barge was like that, and while there was a bit of wind that affected the riders on the Jump Ship, it didn't move at all. It was also a fair bit smaller, and was designed as a contest course on a smallish budget, while Hell Barge was a big budget film set, designed to look great while being filmed from a helicopter.

Jump Ship

But I'm digressing a little from the news at hand. Brandon Semenuk won today, Mike Montgomery was a close second, and Mitch Chubey was third.

to all semenuk haters. its a good thing he won. Montgom basically would just do 4 runs, say hes ready than leave till the next day of practice. I think he got a little cocky about it which is why its a good thing semenuk won. Montgom did slay the course but the extra push of an early event of semenuk beating him on what could be called a casual run for brandon is some good push for him.

I quickly pulled out my camera right before Brandon dropped in for his final run.
Such a great contest!

viccityburner - mike mo had other commitments to take care of while he was in Victoria. like filming for a TV project with edgefactor, testing the first straitline hydro gyro, camp of champions appearances, talking with kids and several other things. he, like many of the others have been practicing all winter for the contest season. at their level doing 4 runs or 8 runs is not going to make much of a difference. Brandon is an amazing rider and the judges felt he rode better than Mike, but I watched practice and do not think Brandon practiced most of the things he did in his contest run. I can tell you first hand that Mike is not a cocky rider and that it is more about making a lasting impression with the people watching than standing on the podium.

Just watched the posted video link and I'm surprised a ride like that can earn a win considering what tricks are being pulled now on MTB's

That video/edit was kinda annoying on the eyes to watch...I like more slow-mo for best trick comp videos though, I had to keep rewinding to see what something was.

Contest was great, only thought though.... If you keep the barge parked in the harbour, tied to the dock, what was the point in using the barge?? Could have just built the jumps on shore and got the same effect, dont really see the point of using the barge if your not going to float it out. Did I miss something?

 it's novelty bro!

they had planned to do it that way, but i forget the reason they had to move in. Pretty sure it was written in another article.

Floating barge could seem like a cool idea at 1st, but consider how much stronger the wind gets as you move out further into the water. Wind and dirtjumps dont go well together.

i was hoping to see fogel up there in the top ten

Anybody else dissapointed in best trick contest? I could come to see only this event, came on time but saw only 3-4 rider riding for 1/2 hour... tons of people waiting and leaving..... and heli flying around all the time I could not hear anything. Hm, maybe I had wrong even list in my hand.
  • 1 0
hmmm, I saw about 4000 stoked fans loving every minute of at least an hour of riding.
  • 1 0
near the end less riders were shredding, and they were always waiting on wind, so that delayed them too, but the first part was better I'd say

Stupid hippy ravers with their socks on their arms... stop fucking up my dirt jump comp!

  • 2 0
he would... jk no hate on semenuk, but hes already on a roll this season
  • 7 0
semenuk has been on a roll his whole slopestyle career, if you could call it that
  • 2 1
Props to Gully and Sorge; good to see them giving the big dogs a run for their money.
  • 10 1
Gully and Sorge are pros.... if anyone in the top 10 was an underdog it was Scott "wink" Grant
  • 4 0
Gully and sorge dont specialize in trick contests tho, theyre more freeriders with a bag of tricks, which is obviously why they did good. just good to see them up there with the big tricksters
  • 2 0
Thank you gouty. I wouldn't consider Sorge or Gullevich to have dirtjump or slopestyle disciplines. Scott Grant rides jump lines all the time; the greater portion of what Gully and Sorge ride (from what I've seen) are big mountain lines and booters. All I'm saying is, it's nice to see them transfer the skill they have from freeriding over to these jump contests and kick some ass.
  • 1 2
You don't think Sorge of Gully are dirtjumpers? 1) facepalm 2) They are slopestyle riders. 3) They are FACTORY slopestyle riders. 4) Don't you see them at most dj/slopestyle events? (hint hint wink wink nudge nudge) 5) Don't judge the character/abilities of a rider based on what you saw in Follow Me
  • 1 0
Uhhhh......I never denied that they could ride slopestyle, but they don't try and make it to every one of these types of contests. And no, I don't really see them at a ton of these events; however, lately they both have stepped it up at a couple. If you're going to berate me and talk to me like I don't even possess a modicum of intellect, how about you name a few jump/slope contests they've been in and how they did. Being absolutely honest, I've only seen the section of Gully, McCaul and Hunter in Follow Me. So f*ck off.

That's enough bitching at each other, any more and you'll both get banned. If you want to yell at each other, send messages, don't do it in the comments please. Thanks!

I just deleted most of this thread of silly bitching and complaining. If you don't like it don't continue ignorant conversations in the comments section of my blog posts. I'm not pointing any fingers at anyone in particular, but the comments section is here for legitimate comments and interesting conversation on the topic of the post. It is not here for stupid comments and run on arguments and bashing sessions. If you want to post a trolling comment expect it to get erased and expect to get banned. thank you for understanding.
