Enduro of Nations, Sauze D'Oulx - Saturday Racing

Jul 28, 2012
by Matt Wragg
There was an all-too familiar sound outside the window this morning. Raindrops beating down on the rooftops is something we've heard far too many times this year. Thunder and lightning joined in for good measure too and there was a tense moment as everyone waited for it to pass, hoping the lift would open and the riders could go racing. By the time the first riders set off the worst of the storm had moved on, leaving enough water on the lift seats to soak through your shorts...

Rain
  Damn.

Faces of the pits.
Faces of the pits.
Faces of the pits.
Faces of the pits.
Faces of the pits.
Faces of the pits this morning. Waterproofs, spiked tyres and smiles.

Wheelies in the rain.
Rain couldn't dampen the excitment for Alex Lupato and Andrea Pirrazolli.

Arty chairlift shots for the win...

The top of the mountain.
This was the vista that greeted riders at the crest of the hill.

Jerome Clementz on PS2.
From the beginning Jerome Clementz set the pace today. This evening he is sitting with an impressive 36 second lead. What is almost as impressive is the way he goes about racing, he is clearly relaxed, having fun and is happy to chat and joke with anyone around.

Nicolas Lau on PS2.
Nicolas Lau is one of the new generation of French enduro riders, following the footsteps of racers like Jerome and Remy. Sitting in second this evening, he is already reaching the highest levels of enduro.

PS2.
It's hard to convey in photos the gradient and loose, rough surface at the top of the hill.

Joe Flanagan on PS2.
Joe Flanagan is a bit of a legend. He only brought his downhill bike with his this weekend, so rather than moaning about it, he got on a pedalled his heavy beast up the climbs. His 22nd position this evening must be an awkward thing for the people behind him to live with.

Jon Adams-Martin on PS2.
There is a really big turnout of British riders this weekend, they are the third biggest group of riders after the Italians and the French. Technically Jon-Adams Martin is from the black country, but you have to let some things slide...

PS4.
This is what riding at Sauze is all about: tearing through lush, green woodlands.

Davide Sottocornola on PS4.
Davide Sottocornola is leading the Italian charge this weekend, but it's not going to plan and he is sitting back in eight this evening. After a strong season it's hard to believe he wouldn't have been expecting a lot more than that.

Dan Atherton on the transfer.
Although they aren't that long, the gradients are pretty tough on the transfer road - even Dan Atherton opted to have a little push.

Morgane Jonnier on PS4.
Morganne Jonnier only stepped in to join the French women's team at the last minute and she didn't even arrive in Sauze late Friday. She's a bit off the back of the other women today, but seeing as she is the only one riding who hasn't had any practice on the course, she's putting in a solid ride. Tomorrow she reckons it's gas open all the way.

Valentina Macheda on PS4.
This is the first time Valentina Macheda has made the Italian team, to celebrate she's even painted Italy on her nails.

Nico Vouilloz on PS4.
Nico is unhappy this weekend. He's been ill all week and is on antibiotics. It says a lot that even when he's well under the weather he can still hold third place against the strongest field you'll see in an enduro race this year.

Vittorio Gambirasio on PS4.
What would one of these articles be without a photo of Vittorio Gambirassio's race face? Even though he's outside the top ten, he's the third Italian, sitting ahead of both Andrea Bruno and Alex Lupato, which must be a big boost for him.

Florian Nicolai on PS5.
Florian Nicolai got stung with a one minute time penalty today after failing to reach the mid-point check-in on time. That minute means he is outside the top ten right now, but would be ninth otherwise.

Andrea Bruno on PS5.
Another race, another bad weekend for Andrea Bruno. The usually happy man was downbeat this evening and is not at all happy with fifteenth.

Nicolas Quere on PS6.
Nicolas Quere is the third member of the French team and also picked up a penalty at the mid-point. What is slightly awkward for the French is none of the top three French riders this evening (Clementz, Vouilloz and Lau) are in the national team.

Dan Atherton on PS6.
Dan Atherton is leading the charge for the British team with a fourth overall. Combined with Al Stock's sixth and Joe Barnes' ninth, the British team are ahead in the team competition right now. This is a big moment for enduro as if they hold this through tomorrow it will be the first time the French have been beaten...

Joseph Murachelli on PS6.
Joseph Murachelli has had a tough day, taking a big hit this morning, but is still trying to keep up and on it.

So six stages in the men's top ten is:

1. Jerome Clementz
2. Nicolas Lau
3. Nico Vouilloz
4. Dan Atherton
5. Martin Maes
6. Al Stock
7. Nicolas Quere
8. Davide Sottocornola
9. Joe Barnes
10. Manuel Ducci

After around 40 minutes of racing, the top ten are split by just two minutes, so it's all still to play for tomorrow. In the women's race Morgane Such is narrowly holding off last year's winner, Anka Martin. The weather forecasts say it should be a good day, so here's to crossed fingers...

Now THIS is what should be in the Olympics!

agreed, not some stupid fucking field in essex. That's not mountain biking.
  • 4 1
No its road racing in a fucking field! I am ashamed!
  • 2 1
Aye, there's literally hundreds of far superior venues in the UK for mountain biking, and they choose literally one of the flattest, most featureless places available for it, and then spent what must have been thousands developing the track, when there are places where it's already available. It's the most retarded thing ever.

I just hate that anything like Enduro/4X/DH is just instantly rules out, something like 5000 down but Olympic would be the most badass thing ever.
  • 2 0
give it time, it might happen eventually, though it is a more extreme sport, most extreme sports don't tend to get in the public eye much.
  • 3 0
Well I mean at least we've got the BMX which is half decent, and yeah I think in coming years where generations that have grown up with these sports are in charge, we'll definitely see some changes!
  • 3 0
true, that BMX track does look incredible. Probably the only part of the olympics i'll think about watching...
  • 1 0
 Yeah I'll probably be watching!

I've never read an article about Enduro until this month. What a mistake! This is real mountain biking. You only get timed on the downs, but you still have to be fit. Having massive balls is no substitute for skill. Do it all on a medium size bike. I want to have a go.

 C'MON DAN!
  • 2 1
I reckon the Brits would still be winning if Dan had actually, mistakenly, brought my 29er hardtail to Sauze instead of sending it with Pete to Val d'Isere. Could've been good on those transfers... Get some boys, English speakers the world over are counting on you!
  • 1 0
Or maybe just a new trance29 on loan?

It should be mentioned that Martin Maes, sitting in 5th was born 1997! I race against him in belgium, where he just dominates all the races... Watch out for a great talent!

Thanks Matt for the coverage, excellent write up and pics!

Great photo's , glad there's some brits in the top ten

Great shots, but I want helicopter video coverage of the open spots and several dozen cameramen in the woods. I want to cover this better than the crappy Olympic ceremonies (no offense my British friends, but I think the motherland could have been better celebrated and what was the baby all about? Plus NBC has some terrible commentors)
  • 2 1
That's not much to ask for... haha, but yeah I think we all wish that for sure.
  • 2 1
frick even a RC copter... I've seen pretty good shots done with them

at least you accept us as the motherland. next time we'll get some bald eagles and just celebrate good old freedom.

An american commentator can ruin just about anything! unfortunately Warner only has so many hours in the day..
  • 2 3
Oh yeah, Tom? What is it about being an American that makes us such horrible commentators? I seem to know of a few really good American riders that have also made really good commentators...
  • 3 3
Funny how a Brit can ruin a good opinion. What a douchebag in a time when comradery is needed.
  • 1 0
The commentators were half the problem for sure. The US has it's share of general silliness. Most of our media for example. Sorry if I stepped on any toes. I'd still watch this any day.
  • 2 0
funny how an american can get so uppety because somebody made a generic comment about 'american commentators', suppose it didn't have to be commentators, just any sort of slander against any type of american, and obviously by not showing enough comradery he is against freedom too.
  • 3 0
Agreed that people shouldn't get defensive about our commentators. There is a reason everyone prefers the uk topgear. But also don't get too defensive about the Olympic opener. It was not a good showcase of what makes Britain great. Of course it wouldn't be very PC to say Britain was responsible for connecting the world's civilizations through its empire of commerce laying the ground work for the modern world. Too many touchy political issues involved.
  • 1 1
I don't care about the commentators, I'm just not a fan of someone who resorts to sweeping generalizations because that person is either too immature or dull... or a combination of both.
  • 2 1
Is Morganne Jonnier any relation to Sabrina?
