WADE SIMMONS: IT'S A HARD KNOCK LIFE

I’d be rich if I had a dollar for every time somebody said, “you’re lucky to have such a great job”. I cannot disagree that being a professional mountain biker is a splendid job indeed. At times it can be surprisingly tough and stressful, and as the years pass, new challenges arise, like a growing family and of course the onslaught of young talent. But luckily, experience pays off. And as the saying goes: “There’s thousands to be made in the bike industry, thousands!”- it used to be hundreds.

Felon soft-shell jacket in stores now.

All humor aside, the true lucky part of this career, I’ve determined, is aligning with many great brands, and having those brands integrate riders’ knowledge into product design.

Flank Leg returns lighter and lower profile than ever, and the proven Race Face open back system means no hopping around on one leg to get these pads on and off.

From the beginning, Race Face has protected my arms and legs. I have since come on board for apparel, signing on at the end of 2011. Now, a year later, and having had the opportunity to work with the soft goods design team, giving input while hammering the gear around the globe, I am proud of what Race Face has to offer. The quality of the gear is as solid as everything else they make - same Race Face construction and styling the brand is known for.

Ambush, bomb-proof business shorts.

It is a distinct advantage for Race Face to be located in Vancouver with access to unrelenting testing grounds. It’s also advantageous that the bulk of Race Face employees are avid, if not bordering addicted, mountain bikers.

New Charge Arm & Leg Guards - Second Skin super fit for targeted protection and minimal coverage.

This combined with the old-school knowledge of Brett Tippie and myself, and a humbling smattering of new school shredders led by Mitch Chubey, sets Race Face design apart.

As we know, every rider has an opinion on what works and what doesn’t; it makes for some heated debates in design meetings. Some days, we literally take it outside (for testing, of course), but ultimately, the end result is always a win-win for the consumer!

What a great idea for a photo shoot of gear, two respected riders with a ton of attitude and style. Makes for a line-up of new gear worth looking at.

I like how Wade is running a Fox 34 with Marzocchi stickers... The new Race Face kit is sweet too.

Sponsor obligations, 650b availability, etc, etc... It's why he's running Hans Damf tires as well, instead of Maxxis.
  • 2 0
Yeah I missed the fact that he was running 650b haha

I love race face! hopefully they come out with more options for hoodless jackets, I like using the straps on my leatt without a hood in the way and a thick hoodie type fabric jacket instead of a waterproof thin membrane would be nice to crash and not need to replace after

raceface needs a long sleeve jersey
  • 1 0
more brands need to come out with tighter fit long sleeve jerseys, not skin tight or tight at all but not a flag like every gp air jersey I've had has been like tho I am very skinny and very tall so maybe its not an issue for anyone else or maybe they were designed to have pads in them although most downhillers i know wear no protection for core/back or arms

Are the Flanks knee/shin guards OK for full-on DH, or is it more recommended for XC/enduro? I love the low profile and the look, but I'm just wondering about the real-life impact absorption.
  • 1 0
I want those guards so bad! Anyone used them?
  • 1 0
Yes, I own em love em, DH-AM, I never crashed in them so I can't comment on the protection. The new gear looks great!
  • 2 0
The Flank pads are definitely made to handle full on DH....but will be at home on Trail and Enduro rides as well. Its a lightweight but tough armor that is comfortable, pedals well, and can protect the user from large impacts.
  • 1 0
if you're still not sold on the flanks/ambush with d3o (although d3o has never failed me even in sharp rocks) check out the digs, those pads are awesome!

Of all the fights I've seen I never thought I'd be able to say I saw Tippie giving Simmons a nipple twist, and it appearing to hurt Tippie more...
