For months we have known that mountain bike slopestyle will become an official X Games discipline and now our anticipation is almost over. This week, on Sunday June 30th, in the beautiful Olympiapark in Munich, riders from around the globe will get together to ride the first FMB World Tour Diamond event of the season. The athletes will be riding for the biggest ranking points available at a single contest as well as wealthy prize money and finally, the glory of winning the first ever mountain bike slopestyle event in X Games.

Every extreme sports athlete dreams of competing in the X Games. For the adrenaline seekers the X Games are their very own Olympics, where skaters, BMX’ers, FMX’ers, even rally drivers can get together to show off their best skills on a massive global platform. Now mountain bikers can join that elite group of athletes and will saddle up for the first time to ride the massive slopestyle course in Munich’s Olympiapark. Darren Berrecloth in a previous Pinkbike interview summed it up best: “It's not a surprise that the X Games wants to be part of our sport because it's one of the raddest spectator sports out there.” It should also be no surprise that a competition of this caliber was welcomed on to the FMB World Tour 2013 event calendar as the first of three Diamond events and the only one to take place in Europe. This is a big step for mountain biking and the riders are going there to prove to the world that our sport belongs in the X Games!

It’s hard to select the crème-de-la-crème of the mountain bike athletes for such an event. After Red Bull Berg Line on May 20th, 12 riders were selected based on the FMB World Tour 52 Week Seeding List and then four additional invites went to athletes who have earned their chance to compete at this incredible contest. Officials have also decided to invite four alternate riders, who can ride and practice on the course and will move up into the qualifiers, in the case that another athlete should not be able to compete. In total: 16 set riders and 4 alternates will be onsite and ready to ride this week at X Games Munich Mountain Bike Slopestyle.

Currently Sam Pilgrim has dominated the FMB World Tour overall ranking with Brett Rheeder following close behind. This Diamond event will be the chance for riders to earn serious ranking points and leap ahead of their rivals. Martin Soderstrom, currently ranked 3rd overall will definitely have high hopes of leading the FMB World Tour overall ranking after this event but likewise his fellow competitors will be striving for a strong result. With such a high level of athletes attending it really is anyone’s guess who will come out on top.

course preview

Alongside the official X Games Munich Mountain Bike Slopestyle event, Red Bull Phenom will take place between the qualifying and the finals. Red Bull Phenom is a separate competition for up and coming athletes who will get the chance to compete on the X Games slopestyle course. Six finalists were selected from video applications and the FMB World Tour 52 Week Seeding List. You can find more information about Red Bull Phenom on www.redbullphenom.com .

All in all, you can expect to see the very best slopestyle action this weekend with the world’s best sending it hard on a challenging and impressive course. With a crowd of 140,000 expected to turn up to witness the action the atmosphere will be one-of-kind. You can watch the X Games LIVE on the ESPN online webcast via: www.espnplayer.com

Cant forget about Pilgrim. Dont know how big these drops are, but it looks like this course is more like a dirtjump competition. Didnt know there would be only one line. And Pilgrim is always a monster at thise kind of comp.

would love to see semenuk walk away with this win...no events this year > win = BOSS

What annoys me is that it's a Diamond event but only a select few of invited riders can attend..... This gives an unfair advantage for the rest of the season.
  • 2 0
Rampage is similar though, I've known of riders who have been told they cannot attend. Isint cworx whistler like that too? Best of the best I guess.

After lookin at the rider list though you're right. Not that mcgarry isint a wicked rider but others place higher in overall standings than him and their not invited. Who knows... ? ?
  • 2 0
It supuses that if someone isn't t invited to, is because he haven't a chance to win or add point to the FMB acount
But sometimes littles unknowns-soldiers do amazing perfomances (basagoitia-gennon)
  • 3 0
I actual don't know why Mcgarry got in over other people
  • 13 1
 Let's go Andreu!!!!!
  • 1 0
i wish him the best but i doubt he will do so well with his injured hand so stoked for this event!

 My prediction:
1. Semenuk
2. Rheeder
3. Pilgrim

Can't wait to watch the action.
  • 3 1
The ESPN online player isn't available in Canada or US apparently. I think you have to watch it on the ESPN TV networks and in those countries that can watch online it looks like you have to pay. If this is the case (as it says in ESPN's FAQ) then I'd rather another smaller comp like Goldman games or Jumpship over X games...
  • 4 0
try watchespn or espn go. we're gonna watch this dude, i promise.
  • 1 0
ESPN player is not available in Australia either, this sucks! And I don't care who places where, just let semenuk and rheeder sort it out, I just want to watch the first xgames live.
  • 1 0
Maybe its just me, but why isn't ESPN promoting this more? It is nowhere to be found on the website... I would think if it was the first event in the sport they would want to hype it up some more.. then again maybe i'm a little biased lol
  • 4 0
As far as I get it from the ESPN website, watching the coverage will cost ya. Bummer.
  • 5 0
 Screw that....

Also I find it weird that two of the FMB diamond-level events, the ones you need to do good at to have a chance of winning the overall, are invitationals. At least this one has the video contest but I wonder when they're creating something like that for the Rampage? Doesn't seem fair that most riders in the FMB will not have a chance to compete at FMB events. That's like having a WC stop exclusive to only the top 30 riders.

Nothings perfect, I guess, haha. Can't wait to watch this shiiit!

I think that since the invite events are a ways into the season it gives the unknown riders a chance to show that they should get an invite.
  • 3 0
first x games are more about representing our sport !

danke für die auskunft ist sehr hilfreich! Big Grin
  • 2 4
they do have a WC event thats only for top riders....its called the world champs
  • 8 4
I'd love to see an all USA podium but I'll be happy if at least one of the McCaul's is up there with zink.
  • 7 2
I dont see one US Guy in the top 5... maybe Semenuk 1, Pilgrim 2, Rhedeer 3, Söderström 4, Genon 5, the two canadians and the euro pack will dominate the event
  • 3 1
You're probably right but one can hope. Zink is never one to be counted out and both of the McCaul brothers can throw down. If they can stay clean they could do well. Either one of them. Either way, it should be an amazing event. I'll be pulling for my folks!
  • 2 0
going to see this live! Checked out the course today, it's rad. Either way semenuk or rheeder will take the win. Gonna be an exciting battle. Still hope for söderström though.
  • 2 1
What happened to that Red Bull Phenom contest? These were the winners of it:

1. Anton Thelander
2. Antti Rissanen
3. Louis Reboul
4. Matt Jones
5. Raymond George
6. Tom van Steenbergen

So why is Thelander the only one of them to be on that list?
  • 4 5
 because he won...?
  • 2 1
It's about f*cking time. This is long overdue. What the f*ck are Kelly McGarry, Cam Zink & Kurt Sorge doing on the list? They're all good riders, but hardly the pinnacle of the sport at this time. I hate to say it but Claw doesn't belong there either if the point is to prove that we belong at X using the best riders we have to offer. Where the f*ck is that Russian guy that does the crazy cash rolls & shit? Antti Rissanen? Tom Steen kills every out of place rider I just mentioned too. WTF is going on here? Why don't we throw some Wade Simmons & Ritchie Shcley into the mix while we're at it? Holy f*ck!!
  • 1 0
Oh & thanks to the Canadian website for directing us to a location where Canadians can't watch it.
  • 5 1
Zink never forget him... He'll probalyey win
  • 1 1
Yeah..Slopestyle into x.games is a very huge first step to show world what Slopestyle is all about, and without any doubt most of the spectators will be amazed ....... next time bring in Rampage in to x.games. .and world will be jaw dropping

  • 1 0
You've gotta be f*cking kidding me. No Red Bull player for one of the biggest events of the year? If this is what being associated with X-Games means then they can go be their uptight shitholes in some other sport.
  • 11 8
 Semenuk, Rheeder, Sorge, my 1, 2, 3
  • 4 2
I don't see Rheeder not being on the podium. I'd say something like this... Rheeder, Zink, Pilgrim. But I'm really pulling for my home town guys and hoping one of the McCauls can pull it off.
  • 1 0
I know the McCauls will throw it down hard! And no, that's not what she said.
  • 1 0
