You remember Filipe Perestrelo, right? Supermarket bike guy? The guy who won the “Ride Giant. Ride Whistler” video contest with an avalanche of support from the Pinkbike community? Well, it happened. Filipe went to Whistler.

When we last saw Filipe, his old bike was in pieces. His contest video, which was filmed by Miguel Freitas, showed him riding back home in Portugal on the most clapped out bike imaginable. Somehow, despite the bald tires, busted up wheels and suspect frame and fork, Filipe still managed to tear it up on his “Supermarket bike.” Until, that it is, he broke it.

Filipe’s story, one of more than 150 videos sent in from around the world, was voted “favorite” by more than 1,800 viewers at pinkbike.com. So far it has had more than 127,000 views!

The grand prize for the “Ride Giant. Ride Whistler” contest included a brand new Giant Glory frameset, but considering the state of Filipe’s old bike, Giant decided to go a step further. We hooked him up big time with a full Giant Glory 0! And that was just part of Filipe’s prize. It also included a trip to British Columbia, Canada, to ride the best trails on earth at Whistler—where Giant is the official bike of the Whistler Mountain Bike Park.

Those who saw what Filipe could do on his old bike can imagine what he could do on that new Glory. After a long, 30-hour trip from Portugal, Filipe arrived in Vancouver, was escorted up to Whistler, and proceeded to shred for three days straight.

Filipe rode the park, hung out with the Giant family, and generally lived it up like a rock star. He said he was blown away by the scenery in B.C., by the Crankworx Whistler event, and by the new world of possibilities opened up by his new bike.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the contest here on pinkbike, it was truly amazing to see so many great videos and stories about why we ride. And once again, congratulations to Filipe!

I hope giant gives him free tune ups for life as well.

 @ pieman6

Giant has already given him a top build DH bike as well as a full week of riding in Whistler.

I'd say Giant has done enough.
  • + 32
Why did he walk off at the end without his bike? 0.o
  • + 49
He was riding one of the rentals, his actual bike probably got shipped to Portugal.
  • + 47
@BikeTrials man i was trying to be nice. if he can't afford to buy a new bike what makes you think he'll be able to afford a new shock if he blows it, or a new rear wheel if he tacos it?
  • + 22
How cool is this... That's totally awesome and kudos to Giant for taking it to the next level and even bigger kudos, props, and congrats to Filipe. What a shredder!
  • + 17
Pieman...... I work 40 hours a week and can't afford to buy a new bike.... should COVE give me the free hook up too ? Because honestly, that would be dope
  • + 16
fair point pieman. i think your first post sounded like you thought giants were crap and needed tuning up up all the time....thats how i read it it, think everyones been a bit hard to neg prop you though. I think fillipe will cherish that bike regardless, just like the rest of us forgoing new trainers to get a new cassette and pads, forgoing his mums birthday present for new tyres, forgoing his partners anniversary present for new rims.........riding instead of going to work.......oh! fuk his life is screwed now just like the rest of us lol. I loved that video just for all the high fives and smiles all round. well done giant you did the best thing imaginable, well done !!!!!!
  • + 28
too few high fives in this video

The video was amazing, go to whistler was an experience for life, thank you very much.
  • + 8
Awesome video, super chuffed for you chap. Totally deserving of the top prize, and good to see you in action again! Regardless of whether you won or not, you showed that anyone can live and breath biking regardless of equipment and no doubt a lot of us will draw inspiration from that. Don't forget to keep us updated on your progress!
  • + 4
 P.S. VOD!
  • + 8
Filp, it was a pleasure to vote for you. We often get caught up with all the latest biking technology but you showed us you just need a set of wheels to have fun. I couldn't care less about the other Crankworx competitions, I've just been hanging out to see you ride!
  • + 1
Fizeste muito bem, irmão ... cuidar e um passeio seguro!
  • + 11
Filip, we all wait now 4 you to show us how you ride you're bike at your local trails. Peace, glad you got your prize!
  • + 13
When can I make a new video Wink
  • + 1
 you're the man Filip!
  • + 2
Fingers on the brakes even when standing still posing for a foto..... i call that STOKED!!!!! good for you man enjoy---
  • + 1
Thanks to Giant for their generous support of this great cause. Thanks to PinkBike for the rest! Congratulations Philipe! Ride the rims off that new bike. Update video please! Peace brother!
  • + 48
so glad this bike went to someone who really needed and would shred this rig! Congrats Filipe
  • - 3
 you are correct
  • + 1
i think it was so nice of giant to give him a full build like he deserved, it really shows that they arent' just a big business who are just trying to make money and that theyre actually good guys, props to giant!
  • + 3
even if it is just them being good guys its still priceless advertising.
  • + 1
 yeah thats true
  • + 31
What a humble guy. Although, I would expect no less. Look at what he brought with him.. Just that little suitcase. For a trip across the sea for a week to ride bikes to his heart's content. Most of us wouldn't pack that light! I am so excited for this guy
  • + 5
Oh you funny Americans.. if its only for a week and all the gear is waiting for u.. that suitcase seems alright to me
  • + 1
Only 3 days actually but yeah they hook him up with the ride gear when he arrives including lid so he didnt need much - pair of shorts and a couple of tees for the bar and thats it.
  • + 24
this is what advertising should be... tell a story... make me feel something... give me goosebumps...
  • + 0
Good story for sure. Doesn't make me want to buy a Giant though!
  • + 21
That was Very Cool of Giant Huge props to Them!! And to Filipe for never giving up!! Prob one of the coolest stories on PinkBike of its kind!!
  • + 20
you become more famous than some pros. all this support is a chance to start a project.
"new world of possibilities opened up.." aproveita a oportunidade.
  • + 17
And again, respect for Giant. It is not that Portugal is that huge market , but what Giant understood is that now business is global so what counts is what you do anywhere with everybody. I was impressed about the true sports spirit being showed by a bike company that is not , like some others, claiming all time to be part of the MTB history/ roots.
For me they just went into Hall of Fame and make me believe that the future is not only the economic crisis lol
Well done also for PinkBike, as always .
Boa sorte e parabéns .
  • + 11
Want footage of him back home riding that Glory :O
  • + 5
good to see it went to a rider that needs it and not some rich little shit with an hd camera, congrats filipe! sick riding especially for just getting used to the glory from the supermarket bike!
  • + 4
Good on ya mate! like they say here in Australia.... when i saw your first video, i thought to myself, it won't take long untill a bike manufacture takes note of him and give him a sponsorship of some kind... Giant did by stepping up and giving him a full bike!!! Awesome! Enjoy your new ride and make sure you post a video of you shredding the same trails on the new bike! Would be cool to do an edit before and after type thing... (just an idea) Something like you riding the supermkt bike, and dreaming about riding the Giant... There... gave you the plot for your new movie, if you do it put my name on the credits hehehehehe Wink
  • + 7
soooooo pumped for this kid, i almost get teary eyed
  • + 2
So glad to finally have a follow up on this story. I was a bit bummed when the Crankworx coverage came and went and there was no mention of Filipe. I'm a big boob. I had tears in my eyes thru the whole video. The industry made someone's dream come true who is in a position for it least likely to happen. Great feel-good story! And Giant is mega cool for stepping up the prize big time for Filipe! I hope Go-Pro sent him home with a camera so we can enjoy footage of Filipe tearing up the eucalyptus and laurisilva forests of Maderia!
  • + 4
Big ups to you Giant, for taking care of a Shredder in Need. I did vote for Felipe, and I'm HAPPY to see he won. Someday I will get to whistler myself, but I'm thrilled Felipe beat me to it.
  • + 4
Giant & Whistler/Blackcomb - you are both class acts for doing this. Props to both companies
  • + 6
What a true Cinderella story.. simply amazing! Good to know there is still good and humble people in the world!
  • + 7

  • + 5
This guy is so authentic. He deserves it most of all Props for Giant! Great job
  • + 4
Hey Felipe! Post up some vids of you shredding on your Giant back home in Portugal!
