You remember Filipe Perestrelo, right? Supermarket bike guy? The guy who won the “Ride Giant. Ride Whistler” video contest with an avalanche of support from the Pinkbike community? Well, it happened. Filipe went to Whistler.
When we last saw Filipe, his old bike was in pieces. His contest video, which was filmed by Miguel Freitas, showed him riding back home in Portugal on the most clapped out bike imaginable. Somehow, despite the bald tires, busted up wheels and suspect frame and fork, Filipe still managed to tear it up on his “Supermarket bike.” Until, that it is, he broke it.
Filipe’s story, one of more than 150 videos sent in from around the world, was voted “favorite” by more than 1,800 viewers at pinkbike.com. So far it has had more than 127,000 views!
The grand prize for the “Ride Giant. Ride Whistler” contest included a brand new Giant Glory frameset, but considering the state of Filipe’s old bike, Giant decided to go a step further. We hooked him up big time with a full Giant Glory 0! And that was just part of Filipe’s prize. It also included a trip to British Columbia, Canada, to ride the best trails on earth at Whistler—where Giant is the official bike of the Whistler Mountain Bike Park.
Those who saw what Filipe could do on his old bike can imagine what he could do on that new Glory. After a long, 30-hour trip from Portugal, Filipe arrived in Vancouver, was escorted up to Whistler, and proceeded to shred for three days straight.
Filipe rode the park, hung out with the Giant family, and generally lived it up like a rock star. He said he was blown away by the scenery in B.C., by the Crankworx Whistler event, and by the new world of possibilities opened up by his new bike.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the contest here on pinkbike, it was truly amazing to see so many great videos and stories about why we ride. And once again, congratulations to Filipe!
