Reading, Pennsylvania may not be the first place you think of when trying to determine a short list of must-ride destinations. That is about to change. The training grounds of two of North America's top downhill talents in Neko and Logan Mulally have been largely put together by another talented, yet slightly less junior rider and trail builder, Dane Clay. The Mount Penn trail network would be the focus of our trip to Reading as Dane, Neko, Logan and Brice explored some of the gnarliest and steepest trails you'll find anywhere in the great state of P-effin-A. The 3rd episode of From Where We Stand is a prime showcase of the talent+terrain+community equation and the brilliance that results.

All of these guys are down to earth and nice guys. The Duryea DH race in Reading held in the Spring is a great opportunity to get out to ride these trails and to meet the people involved in building.

I wish they'd shown a little of that track.

 On board with Kyle Sharp...

Ya what happened to the Diarrhea track or the various huge hucks located in that quadrant! Those "dirt jumps' were silly and disrespectful to the real PA WOODS.

@saint4life Are you talking about the pov video that @taletotell posted?
  • 1 0
Yea the gap video was crazy!

There are more videos of it on this great thing called youtube.

Constructive Criticism Alert: While the trails around Reading are awesome, it would have been cool to have some shots of just how close Antietam and Neversink are to downtown. Less than a mile. You don't get that too many places.
  • 7 2
absolutely...limited budget meant limited schedule...wait til next year's though...
  • 7 4
The trails may be cool but this is boring. The same few features we're shown 5 different times in slowmo, and then eating in slowmo? Wtf?! I'm honestly bothered. I live on the east coast and the riding is awesome in so many places, this just doesn't capture it.

I think Bryce's (FatTireFests) intention was to get some interest about east coast trail and trail centers. Considering he did this project in less than a year start to finish, I'm sure he's aware of some of its faults. I think he did a damn good job for a one man show on a limited budget. Slomo or not.

After this brilliant article, I think your going to have a mass flood of tourists in Reading, Pennsylvania. WTF is there a password protected video for? What kinda MTB video's are you guys making out there in the PA? Hopefully there is no sheep, rubber galoshes, velcro gloves and cliffs in the mix.
  • 3 0
ya figured us out...so no one's interested in sheep talk?
  • 4 0
@Sithbike: All of the above. Keep a look out for the extended directors cut.

Thanks for unlocking the video guys. And the show case of the unique PA terrain and trails. It's nice to know the world is full of great places to ride.

 Reading PA doesnt get tourists..lol

 yet...

aside from the awesome trails here, its one of the poorest cities in the country. what is there to bring tourists in? the vf outlets? ha
  • 4 0
bikes have the potential to bring people in. it's been done in several places. it's being worked on now in others. Why not Reading?

3 videos in an I'm pretty tired of that intro already... otherwise.. more east coast!
  • 2 0
I'd agree. Intro was a bit much. He was trying to make it so that you could watch any of the 3 videos alone and understand the project.

i grew up in MD, but now live in western WA. am really stoked to see soo much rad activity in the MD/PA area these days. i don't think i will ever move back, as i despise the horrid humidity in the summer, and then the snow storms in the winter, but this video made me 2nd guess myself for a minute. keep up the good work! also, it would be even cooler if the trail crews had an arsenal of leaf blowers over in your decidous woods, so much leaf fall still on those trails, i swear it is funner to ride on actual dirt.

I'm so proud to see my home mountain on Pinkbike.... Really some awesome riding within 30min of Reading! Also in the area.... Neversink Mountain, French Creek State Park, Blue Marsh etc etc.
  • 1 0
Does French Creek have any downhill stuff? I only live about 10 mins away, but I never really considered it for some odd reason.
  • 3 0
It has some good descents, however it's primarily trail riding. It's worth checking out, just don't bring the 7-8" bikes.

 It's open now...sorry about that!
