So Canberra's been and gone... 2014 is apparently much more about Cairns, the scene of great 1996 extremity and general 'radness'. Our only hope is that they have the good sense to preserve the original vintage delight in full, including impossi-tight switchbacks and 'super fun' corkscrew section.

Don't miss the appearance of the 'most controversial rider of the world tour'... That's Shaun Palmer, dropping at 12.22. Steve Peat, who came in 15th here and Cedric Gracia, taking 2nd in juniors, are the only two war heroes still on the scene today.

Please make no attempt to view this material without attaching your longest travel 80mm triple clamps and your shortest reach 150mm stem. Helmet with new-age 'chin piece' also recommended.

1996, I was 34, riding in cross country races on a Trek Y33 in Texas. Now I'm 51, riding DH at Angel Fire. Still got the Y bike, but the grin is bigger on a Demo 8. Never stop riding.

Those bars are soo thin!! :O

Palmer could almost show up to a DH world cup today on the bike/kit he is riding in this video and not look out of place. Imagine what we would all be wearing if he had stuck to snow boarding!!!
  • + 3
The funny thing is he probably would have won if he was wearing spandex.
  • + 7
Palmer was good, but he was a chump
  • + 1
Yep... I was around him a LOT back in the day and the guy, while being a really good/prolific rider, was a total PRICK. hard to say what was bigger, his ego or his skill sets. Probably his Ego... I saw him loose, I never saw him NOT being a prick lol

Thank God for Rob Warner!!!! Did they get the Tour de France announcers to announce this? They are not much better than old golf announcers. ha!
  • + 23
You shut your mouth! Phil Ligget is an amazing announcer. I would watch grass grow if he called it.
  • + 3
I wonder how big GO-PRO's were in 1996!!!!!lol. Mount one those on your helmet you'll have neck ache
  • + 2
It would be a handheld VHS video camera!

10:45 .... Super Moto Whip by Scott Sharples...

Makes Brendan Fairclough look like a rookie....

bman33 The golf announcers here haven't changed, they sound exactly like that. Emotions towards the bygone age aside cyrix that is incredibly boring announcing. The current crew makes it much more entertaining and interesting.
  • + 1
Its not Phil Ligget, its some dude I cant remember the name and Paul Skilbeck.
  • + 1
I know it's not Phil Ligget in this video. He said "Did they get the Tour de France yada yada" and that is Phil Ligget predominantly which is why I mentioned him.

Narrow bars, spandex, v-brakes, and rocker mullets (nice one M.King) - DH's birthplace

 Ahhh, I miss skin suits.
Back when the sport was about who was fastest down a hill, not who looked the coolest Frown
  • + 5
Fast or not, replacing Lycra after every crash is costly!

A DH track... in CARINS??? Seriously??? I've spent a LOT of time in Cairns and I'd never think of it as a DH track kinda place. Still, it's cool to see a "new" old track come back to life and more DH racing is never a bad thing. Now break out the XXXX Heavies and the Bundy OP!!!!!!!!!!!

Cairns was once a huge name in the World Cup circuit, so much that Nike made an SPD shoe in it's namesake. whoever remembers that is old school:

...And Nico Vouilloz used them! Smile
  • + 2
Still have a pair in my shed!
  • + 3
Oh man, all the riders sitting down and spinning in the flats. Almost no one standing up and hammering. Times sure have changed.
  • + 4
That's got to be one of the best start huts I've seen.
  • + 1
I hope they use it next year!
  • + 1
I rode this track everyday for a few months and its awesome, I hope the new one does Cairns proud. There are some rad downhill tracks in Cairns great to see the world cup back there cant wait!
  • + 4
epic! love this old school footage
  • + 3
Hey RedBull, do you want to count the number of cameras we had in 1996?
  • + 4
 Can't wait for next year
  • + 2
Imagine a 250m pedal sprint at the end of a world cup today, half of which is pure flat on grass.
  • + 1
Yeah DH racing was REAL different back in the day...
  • + 1
Anyone still think they need a 10k bike to go fast? Haha. Loving this old school throw back. I'd like to see the WC revisit the thredbo track.
  • + 2

  • + 1
''...and your shortest reach 150mm stem'' ???...what length were they usually using, 200mm ???? haha....
  • + 2
you can still ride that track today, its a little overgrown but ridable :p
  • + 2
thanks uci for banning spandex in dh racing................!
  • + 1
They are even racing with body armor on this XC Course! That was way in advance of todays time.
  • + 1
Keep an eye out for top Canadian Eric cseff as a junior. He was our hope back in the day. Even beat shandro in Ontario too.
  • + 1
I remember, Bud! The Ride guide crew covered the silver star Canada cup DH probably around '96 and I watched Cseff just rip it apart, I don't know why it didn't translate to the World Cup for him, too bad...
  • + 2
 Dear God, those V-brake shots...
  • + 3
 How bikes have come on
  • + 0
Fucks yeah I had those same safety yellow Magura Race-Line D brakes Palmer's riding on my first freeride bike. '98 K2 beast for life!
  • + 2
 Those handlebar widths!
  • + 2
srsly... and that was considered "wide" for it's time hahaha
  • + 4
so will what we consider 'wide' now really not be the end?

this must be the future

I remember De Bever had that proto BH set up like his BMX race bike, hence the narrow bars and very small frame/low seat I remember seeing him beating Christophe Levesque one week and podium in DH the next, torquey mofo...
  • + 1
stoked to see it back in cairns. hope the course is sick
  • + 1
The new course will be rad!
  • + 1

Only 3. Marcus Klausmann still races. At least he was last year.
  • + 1
1996 DH is easier than 2013 Enduro by the look of it...
  • + 1
The Aussie commentators have no idea
  • + 1
Nicolas Vouilloz still on the enduro scene today, don't forget it !
  • + 2
Loic Bruni got same accent to Nico...and he's fast too and getting faster! !

Walden 83 I hope you fkd up your spelling there and ment champ not chump when talking about Palmer this is the race mtb changed because of him
  • + 3
He meant chump,,don't get me wrong the guy was/is a legend and has done so much for the sport. He blew the field apart and got everyone thinking "what's next" bit like bender did for free ride. He was just kind of a arrogant dick that's all. I respect him, just don't like him
  • + 1
@Wally: As someone who "knew" Palmer back in the day and grew up around his BS here and there racing DH/4x back in the day (I wasn't racing against him though)... He is a CHUMP. Great, even legendary rider?? Certainly... Total walking fore-skin??? Most definitely. I've got some great Palmer stories, that might change your mid about how great he is, legend or no...
