Garage Porn: Fred Glo's Garage

Apr 16, 2012
by Matt Wragg

We've all been there, right? Sitting there in some meeting, lesson or family gathering, trying to look like we're keeping up with what's happening, but slowly drifting off into our own thoughts... Daydreaming. While many people fantasise about wardrobes, shoe racks or jewellery boxes, for riders it's garages. What bikes would you have? How many? What other toys would you want in there, how would you arrange it all, what would you never have in there...

Fred Glo has been riding mountain bikes since the mid-1980s, and motos since well before that even. He's the man behind the French enduro series, Urge Helmets and Tribe Distribution who handle brands like Yeti and Fox Racing Shox for France. Having lived and breathed bikes for that long he's had some time to perfect the collection in his garage. We were lucky enough to spend a morning poking round and trying to ignore the sneaking suspicion that he's having more fun than we are...

Fred s garage...

Fred s garage...

Fred s garage...
Bikes, check. Motos, check. What you can't see from this angle is the paddleboard, or the skis, or the wetsuits... That's a lot of boxes ticked right there.

Triumph Bonneville scambler

Details of the Triumph Bonneville scrambler including the custom paintjob and prototype dampers from Fox Racing Shox.
In every garage there's something that takes pride of place, one thing that is obviously the centrepiece. This is Fred's: a classic Triumph Bonneville Scrambler. Check out the custom shocks from Fox - Fred's helped them develop these for older bikes as upgrading from the out-dated OE shocks to high-end dampers like these makes a huge difference to the way the bike handles. His friend custom-painted this for him, which is a private joke as the guy who painted it, Saveu, was one of the first people in France to have start putting woodwork in his mountain bike trails.

Yeti 575.

Details of his Yeti 575 including the Ethirteen wheelset.
You'd never guess what a Yeti distributor rides, would you? This is his all-mountain bike, a 145mm, do-it-all Yeti 575 - perfect for the technical, steep tracks around the St Tropez area. For lighter duties he also has a carbon Rocky Mountain Element tucked away in there too.

Yeti ASR-X.

Details of the Yeti ASR-X
For plain fitness duties there's this, a Yeti ARC-X. Two sets of wheels means he can switch between road and off-road quickly. He admits that he's not a roadie, but he likes to burn unsuspecting mountain bikers on this around some of his easier local trails.

1981 SWM 125cc motocross bike.

Details of the 1981 SWM 125cc motocross bike.
This is a '81 SWM 125cc. The Italian company produced some of the best enduro motorbikes in the late 1970s, but ran into problems and closed down in the 1980s, so this was one of the last models that they made.

1978 SWM 125cc motocross bike.

Details of the 1981 SWM 125cc motocrossbike
Another SWM, this time a '78 SWM 125cc. These SWMs don't get ridden very often any more, maybe only once a year, but they are so beautiful that they will always have a place in his garage.

Yamaha Scorpar 250cc trials bike.

Details of the Yamaha Scorpar trials motorbike
There are a couple of trials bikes in there, this is his four-stroke Yamaha Scorpa. These are perfect for getting around the place at the races he runs, to make sure everything is going smoothly and because they are so light they don't damage the ground too much. Looking in close you can see how battered the sump is and how much dirt coats the chain. That's another theme with everything in his garage, it's all used and mostly unwashed. He's not put together a collection of shiny things to look at, he's bought things to have fun with, to use and get the most out of.

1982 Toyota BJ 42

Details of the 1982 Toyota BJ 42
Strictly this wasn't in the garage, it was parked outside, but, well yeah. It's a 1982 Toyota BJ 42 that he picked up a couple of years ago to replace his dying Land Rover. It's also the perfect vehicle to reach his trail network with when he wants to carry tools to go out and dig or repair sections.

An old Specialized Rockhopper from the 90s.

An old Specialized Rockhopper from the 90s.
Tucked away behind everything else was this little retro gem. As a Yeti and Rocky Mountain distributor, Fred says he isn't too keen on Specialized, but who could throw away something this classic?

The modified 661 Mullet that started Fred thinking about making his own helmets and the prototype Urge Realjet helmet.
These are two important helmets in Urge's history. On the left is a modified 661 Mullet that got Fred thinking about making his own helmets and on the right is the prototype of the soon-to-be-released Realjet.

The bike rack picnic table
Now that's a picnic bench! One of his friends makes these locally and it's not accident a bike wheel fits in there perfectly - there's even a hole next to it for a lock.

Cachou.
The ever-present Cachou. Years of riding with Fred mean she can drop most riders on the locals trails!

Fred
Forty-something going on fourteen... As we said at the start, we have a sneaking suspicion that Fred is having more fun than we are. A big thank you to him for taking the time to let us have a look through his garage.

That's was Fred's garage, but what would you have in your perfect garage?

One of those articles hat a pleasure to read specially for those who feel that garage deep feeling with their owns.....

But this article has a basic issue......not basic for all but for us in Iran.....I suggested this article to be read in our local bike forum....( im the owner ) but seem its filtered under our governmental law..........

and no one in My country could read nor could see its fabulous pix........for the word (( porn )) just like pink bike its self that was filtered for over 4 years in iran.....i personally fought the way to open it up and actually the government kindly accepted my reasons as a biker ....

This garage truly has to be considered as porn with all these sexy babes in......but that phrase is causing our nation not to be able to see all those good looknig babes inside.....

That is possibly the best comment anyone has ever left on this website. Sorry to hear your internet is being censored (I won't use the "p" word next time), but glad you enjoyed it, and kinda blown away people in Iran are reading my articles. Cheers, Matt

ThanX Matt.....actually i had 3 different phone calls from different cities in Iran.....( i own a small bike shop and i sell nation wide ) they all talked about the first page article of PB that is censored ....!!! i took alook and fount out its for that (( porn )) phrase.......

man its a long long time i want to write down a good article about riding in Iran.......but the bike shop is eating all my time.......
ill do it as soon as possible....

Cheers from Iran....

His garage door interests me. It seems it's like a 1 piece unit, with the 2 bars making it like a solid door, but it's retracted all the way into the house and is flat, like how a hinged/sectioned door typically raises and retract. I guess he runs similar rails for wheel tracks like what I normally see, and has a set of wheels half-way up and another set at top.
  • 1 0
They have a sprung linkage half way up, when retracting inside, the bottom of the door swings out a few feet. I have the same sort except metal at home.

Man every time I see a 575 I want one more and more, I have the 303 but the 575 seems like the perfect all around b ike. Love Yeti soooooo much it shud b illegal
  • 2 0
The 575 is the best bike I have ever owned. You won't be disappointed.
  • 1 0
You're not helping my craving for it... ;P

How does it feel in the air? That's always been my one drawback is that it looks like the rear end wud love to buck you off. But I've never had the opportunity to sit on one and actually feel it.
  • 1 0
For me it is totally comfortable in the air. I have a 2009 and a 2011, and there is a definitely a difference between the two handling wise, but they're both great bikes. The 2011 is a little heavier and doesn't climb quite the same, it almost feels like it wants to keep the wheels on the ground a bit more (if that makes sense) but it does feel comfortable in the air. Whereas when I ride my '09 I can throw it around a bit easier and can pop over roots/rocks and everything else without thinking, like it is an extension of my body.
  • 1 0
I know exactly what u mean by it wanting to keep the wheels on the ground, the 2009 sounds like it would fit my style a little better, now uve pretty much convinced me this is going to be my next bike ;P
  • 2 0
what a garage, if im like that when im 40 odd ill be happy, sadly the wife may have sumit to say about that, but after all thats why us men have selective hearing.....
  • 2 0
i like a guy who knows his priorities......all that money in the garage and a £11 baby high chair from ikea......quality.(my missis noticed that not me(honest)).
  • 1 1
It seems like this is a section I've seen somewhere recently.... Oh yes, decline magazine. Also, that is a new Triumph not a classic one. And although his customization may make it a Scrambler/Bonnie. Triumph doesn't make a bonnie scrambler. It is either one or the other. Sweet bike just the same! Sorry for being a downer, I know everyone copies everyone these days.

At the risk of sounding like I'm a bragging tosser - I think I have the perfect garage - well at least for my wife and I. We didn't really mean it to turn out like it has. We just went a little mad. You might say the wife and I had a mid life bike crisis :-) Bikes in order of travel:
1. Trek Session 88 200mm 37lbs 2010
2. Canyon Vertride 9.0 180mm 33lbs 2012
3. Trek Slash 9 160mm travel 30.5lbs 2012
4. Carbon Blur LT 140mm on Easton Haven Carbons 27lbs 2010
5. Turner 6 Pack 150mm (frame only now - just been stripped of all carbon parts for the blur) 2006 - top bike even now - just about 3lbs too heavy for enduro racing!
6. Whyte 146 150mm travel - just about to be sold tomorrow! 2007
7. Raleigh Team Burner on White Skyway Tuff IIs brand new!
8. Genesis hybrid 2007

Wife's bikes are:
9. Specialized Demo 8 2011
10. Specialised Enduro 2011
11. Canondale Phophet 2007 (Going for Sale)
12. Specialized Stunt jumper

My car: Audi RS4 Avant V8 415bhp 2007
Wife's car: Merc Vito 150bhp Sport Van in black with blacked out windows skirts etc. Honestly, she wanted a pimped van!

I've realised I need to get some pics of this mad collection. I was running the 2nd hand Turner for about 5yrs - loved it. Then I went on a bit of a spending spree last year when I decided to start enduro racing serously. Being 40something, while bringing old age has given me time to save some cash for this fine collection. I have finally ran out of space and now have to buy a bigger garage - I'm a lucky man with a wife mad keen on biking too - life is pretty good to us right now :-) I'm now racing the top 4 bikes. Best result so far - 2nd in Cat, 11th overall in the Alpine winter series in Scotland, 3rd in Cat and 15th overall in the MacAvalanche. Scotlands answer to the Mega :-)

Stay rubber side down folks..........
