bigquotesThe first thing I noticed on testing the Fury was the weight, you know it's much lighter than what I'm used to, much lighter than what I've raced on in the past. That's only a positive thing for racing World Cups and it's a huge advantage for me. The suspension is very linear, it's a lot less progressive than what I've ridden in the past you know, it doesn't ramp up as much, it really allows me to use all the suspension. The suspension is very impressive. - Gee Atherton

bigquotesThe geometry on the bike is slightly different to what I'm used to and working with Fox and working with the other sponsors to make alterations to the components, we've managed to get the bike completely down to the setup how I run it, how I run it on a fast steep World Cup race track, with the right bottom bracket height, the right head angle. I'm stoked to be able to say I'm running a bike with my perfect geometry now. - Gee Atherton

Gee also got a chance to ride his new GT hardtail as well, no comments on that as of yet, but here are a few photos...

What, was Larock's video amateur hour? You guys crushed it!

Those are some of the best pictures I've seen, from a strictly photographer standpoint. Seen way better riding, but the quality is unreal, especially that last sunset shot, insane!

Also, it sounds like Gee didn't like the commencal's all that much...

I'm actually less sold on the frame now than I was before; "Linear" threw me off. I would still like to ride one though.
  • 10 7
Sick shots and a rad video. Makes me miss riding in California a little... Outside of the environmentalists.
  • 56 5
@suicidedownhill well hes just saying what his sponsors want to here because him saying its a better bike will sell more bikes
  • 36 7
I wonder if that bike can handle the Redbull rampage.

Maaaan! He's riding a bike he has rode for like one day and he sends it! Fucking awesome riding!!

I agree that the photography is unreal... Ian Hylands is the man. But, I'm not sure Gee's face warrants a close-up in HDR, haha.

Whats the hardtail? is it proto? its friggin sick!

They need to make a sticker that says "GeeT" to play on his name with the branding a bit...
Hell, I'd buy one...

Why can't the PinkBike video quality be as crisp as the photo quality? Would be so sick in HD!
  • 2 2
@timlake he should use one he's way faster than the average racer that normal dh helmets are for
  • 4 0
I wonder if that bike can handle the Redbull rampage...... I am pretty sure Tyler McCaul rode one last year at the rampage. The hardtail is there la bomba its been out for at least a year or two.
  • 2 0
Too expensive to host apparently, its understandable, HD files are massive after all. There have been some hints here and there of HD content with a couple of trailers in HD though. Maybe next year?
  • 2 0
I don't get it? Too soon?

"All the digital/HDR/photoshop... ruins the pictures, but I know the days are long gone of ever seeing a pro photo (at least on pinkbike) that will not be digitally altered beyond realistic belief."

Sorry, but only 2 of those photos are what you could call 'digitalyphotoshopinglyHDR-ified'. Stop being such a drama queen.

Gee push your bloody visour down it looks silly brah
  • 19 0
@DirtGash really? Not sure where you've been looking but I think I would be fairly accurate in saying that less than 1 or 2% of Pinkbikes professional photos are digitally altered at all, let alone "beyond realistic belief." Personally I feel confident in saying that maybe 4 out of the over 3000 images I've posted to Pinkbike have any processing other than basic color correction...
  • 1 0
Seriously, the first two photos are processed some and only the portrait is "beyond realistic" in my eyes. It's just a look that a lot of clients want now, HDR-ish and smart sharpened like hell. ALL of the other photos are hardly processed... Levels, Vibrance, Saturation, maybe some light sharpening... Super basic.
  • 3 1
HELMET IS EURGHHH! But on the other hand its a better idea to keep that fishbowl on your head when riding, a bit stupid if you do any riding without a helmet.
  • 1 0
@dingus I do not agree with you there. I have found that now I have PhotoShop, I edit a lot of my pictures. I do not over-edit them, but maybe add a certain hue or increase the contrast and vibrance. It very often helps improve the photo in my opinion. And I think all of these photos are absolutely stunning, and they certainly have not been over-edited!
  • 1 1
"I think all of these photos are absolutely stunning, and they certainly have not been over-edited!" - I don't think you do disagree, but maybe I didn't word my comment in the best way.

What I said is that only 2 of the above photos have had obvious editing done to them. Which is at odds with what DirtGash said "the days are long gone of ever seeing a pro photo that will not be digitally altered beyond realistic belief."

With the exception of the first 2 photos, I agree that none of the photos have been over edited. (I also use photoshop to do some adjustments to 99% of my photos.)
  • 1 0
I like how careful he is to not directly say "than commencal" but rather says "than what I've had in the past" Very diplomatic of him.

Posted by Lehel-NS lower in the comments:

Linear: the suspension will not ramp up through the travel, it will stay stay almost the same all the way.

Progressive: the suspension stiffens up through the travel, it's harder to bottom out, but it is less sensitive.

 That white looks so crisp!
  • 17 3
yeah, sounds like they'll be changing it it. too bad, that all white scheme is a good look
  • 19 4
+1!! The white looks MEGA! Please don't ruin the bikes looks with some gay-ass bright graphics (if there's neon anywhere near it someone deserves to be shot). KEEP IT WHITE!
  • 8 1
totally agree, the white is a good change
  • 13 2
Yeah! Dont change the white, it looks so goddamn RAD! And Gwin should get his warm Pants out, Europe is back on the Track!
  • 3 1
 Agreed.
  • 1 3
damn straight - please for gods sake keep the white!!! the mechanics won't like it but thats what pressure washers are for it just looks so clean and purposeful!!
  • 4 0
There is no way to make that better or more interesting to look at. White complements the tech components so nicely, just ask steve jobs.
  • 2 0
yeah i second .... or ... er ... eighth that. The white looks sick with the gold of kashima and saint. I think the athertons will make an awesome statement with just white and gold on the world cup circuit; in amongst all the dayglow douchebaggery!

  • 3 1
Yeah because bikes win world cups.

Ok well that was great! Cant wait to see what this season is going to bring.

But why didnt you do a segment on the whole team? Because that would have been more interesting IMO , to see what rach thinks and how dans getting on with the enduro and what they all think of the new sponcers.
  • 4 0
My thoughts exactly. After all Rachel is a World Championship winning rider as well.
  • 7 0
There will be a post with Dan and the GT Fury coming up soon, and Rachel was not in California while we were there. We're hoping to shoot something with her in the next few weeks if things work out.

i hate his new moto helmet... ugly as sh*t
  • 3 0
epic photos with a lot POD potential!! tup

I don't really like the video. There many great shots, but I'm not with the editing.... and it seems to be a great advertising for GT. "Never ridden a bike which is so lightweight like this" Wink
  • 1 0
You gotta remember that sponsorship is essentially just a high profile PR position. Brand recognition and endorsement.

Gee looks super smooth & fast on that GT Fury
  • 2 1
yeh I thought that, he always looked loose on his commencal, but looks totally solid on this!
  • 3 2
the trails were super smooth and fast also though.
  • 1 0
actually there not super smooth at all, actually prety braking bumped out, and alot of rocks. telonics is super rough!
  • 1 0
Ah sorry that is just how it looked in the video to me
  • 1 0
yea they should have filmed on PGs which is a super gnarly trail.
  • 1 0
'bigburd' - you precisely missed the whole point there - it 'looked' smooth because Gee was riding so smoothly, but if you actually look at the terrain underneath him its full of rocks and drops and bombholes, its pretty gnarly stuff! haha
  • 2 0
like to see the bike is very solid even beeing a monopivot and the way how it finish with all the WC components like the fox 40 with kashima coat ohh yeah ,i see gee going has a demon with that never end travel bike in world cup maybe this is the year for him ;DDD
  • 4 0
Anyone know what shoes he is running? Not the most exciting question I know....rad video though.
  • 2 0
I've been trying to figure this out for a bit now, no one seems to have an answer!
  • 2 0
atherton signature shimano, no plans for release
  • 6 3
in the interview he kept saying it's different, sounds suspiciously like promoting of something he isnt a fan of. lol

still, I think the change will be good for them.
  • 1 0
Why would he sign with a team he didn't like?
  • 13 0
 $$$
  • 5 0
I get the same impression. All the atherton team has talked about in their "I got a new GT" interviews is having custom parts made and angle sets installed to change the bike. Sounds like they dislike the bike to me (besides carbon and spring curve) and they are just trying to make it work. My guess is GT radically changes the bikes soon. Bet hes diggin the carbon though.
  • 13 1
I don't get why you guys are knocking the Fury for not being *perfectly* designed for Gee. I'm pretty sure any bike they pick up would have custom work done so that Gee feels 'just right'. If I hopped on your bike I'm sure there's stuff that could be changed to better suit me.
  • 5 0
exactly scrippsranchDJ, plus you cant just leave one sponsor and then just start bashing them, the video would turn into i hate commencal this and that, thats just not nice or right
  • 2 1
I wasn't trying to bash it. I was agreeing with your thoughts that GT changes up the fury geo soon to fit Gee closer to stock. That way its easier for them to set up and more fan boys will buy it.
  • 9 0
At mountainbiker24 and mattbird, the answer is he wouldn't sign with a company he didn't like. No amount of money would convince a top racer to switch to a bike they didn't like or didn't think they could win on. Results are more important than $$, without good results the $$ will disappear fairly quickly.
  • 1 0
Gee's Commencal didnt use production geometry either. Dont read too much into that bit about getting the geometry just right.
  • 1 0
It's not a new bike either. Remember that. What I'm more interested to see is what GT has in their prototype labs right now
  • 1 2
His Commencal had pretty weird geo too. I remember it had a 1240 or 1280mm wb and an over 18'' CS. I think he may like the CS on this one to be longer. I wonder if GT will update the bike since the molds are pretty expensive.
  • 1 1
I think it's pretty interesting that they're running a shortened shock AND offset bushes AND an angleset AND the forks slammed in the crowns. Man that bike must be high and steep as standard!
  • 1 0
You can look it up at their site. It's not that bad realy. A 65ha only is a bit strange but it was released some time ago
  • 1 0
I was wondering what is the difference of progressive and linear suspension? the thing is I dont know if i should get a 2010 gt fury or the specialized status. I think gt fury is better by the carbon frame but I havnt ever used a bike without articulations(fsr) at the suspension. Can you guys help me?

Linear: The axe path does not change.
Progressive: The axle path changes throughout its travel.
  • 19 2
Linear: the suspension will not ramp up through the travel, it will stay stay almost the same all the way.

Progressive: the suspension stiffens up through the travel, it's harder to bottom out, but it is less sensitive.
  • 5 0
wait, wut??? Isn't more along the lines of the suspension taking the same amount of force to be compressed throughout the whole range of travel. As opposed to progressive in which the shock becomes harder to compress as it gets deeper into the travel. Hence he said,

"it really allows me to use all the suspension"
  • 3 30
flag bubbaleech (Jan 23, 2012 at 23:46) (Below Threshold)
Basically, think of it in the feel of a fork:

Air-Progressive
Coil-Linear
  • 3 1
 haha what?
  • 1 0
 lehel beat me to it..
  • 13 0
what Lehel said. Progressive suspension becomes stiffer as it goes through the travel, linear stays the same. Progressive is harder to bottom out, but you don't use all the travel unless you're about to bottom out, linear gives you a much plusher feel through the entire travel, but less resistance to bottom out. Gee mentioned that even though his last bike had the same amount of travel as this one, it felt like it had 2 inches less...
  • 8 1
Holy crap Bubbaleech, you seriously need to learn how a bike works before posting about them.
  • 4 0
it really wasnt that stupid a comment...
  • 1 0
ricardomedina. compra la specialized yo tengo una specialized y me encanta. le suspensiĂłn FSR es buena para suvir la montana, y la vajada es increible
  • 2 0
linear suspension is generally more suited to DH racing bikes, which need to use the full range of the suspension travel to track the ground whilst moving at extremely high speeds progressive suspension is generally more suited to FR bikes which must resist huge bottom out impacts from hucks, drops and gaps at generally slower speeds than DH race bikes
  • 1 0
Hmm all the comments are white?

I hate Gee Atherton, he makes it look so easy, like anyman can ride like him!

'Perfect geo' - is that what were all striving for? Does it get any better than that? Where would he go next (or anyone else with the perfect geo for that matter)?
  • 2 0
Someone probably tried to do a blink/highlight html code to make one word or something POP out... and they forgot to CLOSE the font change again and so everyone is stuck with white comments.
  • 2 0
 On white background haha!
  • 1 0
Looks like he could use a shadow + rear mech in some of those photos..his chain looks pretty 'flappy!' But then I look at the bike on the stand and the gold section on the Saint rear mech looks way beefier than the one on mine....is this the first look at the re-vamped Saint group set?

Yes, there is word. And the word is no. The Athertons are riding for One Industries this year, not Animal, so they'll be sporting One kit for the season... We should have a behind the scenes look at One shortly...

He's not wearing a Leatt Brace anymore but a Moto Helmet. Anybody know why?
  • 2 1
 Maybe sponsorship clashes ?
  • 1 2
Gwin made that change when he came to Trek. So soon we forget about Dan's accident.
  • 2 5
I hate to sound like a broken wheel but neck braces slow you down.
  • 3 1
Maybe he's using the peace of mind that comes from having the protection of the moto helmet to better focus on charging runs. And he may not be wearing a neck brace because he's chillin in socal on relatively mild terrain. Just a theory, we'll wait and see what he races in.
  • 1 0
Switching to moto helmet means he most likely won't wear a neck brace for races. If he was still wearing a Leatt for races he'd definitely be wearing if for a press shoot or else sponsors wouldn't be happy. I am sure after his few head injuries last year he wanted to step up the helmet protection and maybe just didn't like racing with the brace after all.
  • 2 0
Gee should try hungarian bacon... also, nice video, nice shots, and a really good bike.

  • 1 0
I like the bacon comment at the end.
  • 1 0
To be honest i think this is a big disgrace to commencal, GT SHOULD DIE!
  • 1 0
Those Photos are Amazing! The picture quality is absolutely astounding!!!
  • 1 0
Geez he is just putting down Commencal left and right haha
  • 1 0
Can see them doing very well on these bikes !
  • 2 1
 What about the Atherton project????????
  • 2 2
 That's Red Bull stuff.
  • 1 0
looks like anderson truck trail and then mission trails jumps
  • 3 0
all on Telonics or thereabouts, and sheep hills. You're only about 1.5 hours out...
  • 1 0
thanks for the info and killer photos, Ian. I rode Telonics about 12 years ago and it scared the crap outta me. hopefully a decade's+ worth of fire road and downhilling on my sc superlight will change this. doubtful but worth a shot.
  • 1 0
a dupa .... tyle moĹĽna powiedzieć ... na go GT ...
  • 1 0
His 40 seems to be set up very stiff.
  • 1 1
Most top pros run them stiffer than regular folks. Look up that pb article when someone from the crew rode Brendogs bike and couldn't because he was going too slow to get grip from it.
  • 1 0
I think Laroque and Hylands must have held hands all day....
  • 1 1
Best corner bike ever - lateral stiffness is amazing. It will improve Atherton's ride.
  • 1 0
The proof will be in the race results.

I can't see why it would be better than the Commencal; apart from the light weight and possible carbon stiffness. The Atherton's Commencals had far longer wheelbase and were slacker than the GTs. Also Gee admits that the suspension is too linear. They also had to fit shorter eye-to-eye shocks, offset bushes, head angle reducer cups and slam the forks. Doesn't seem ideal.

Hopefully they will build custom frames for the Athertons so that they have geo, suspension etc which they like (after all they spent years developing custome Commencal Supremes so they must like the way they ride!)

How many white 661's with blue soles does that guy own?

  • 1 4
is anyone gonna keep up with Gwin, if he does not crash?....even danny harts AMAZING run , gwin was up a little- till BAM... Hope its a more competitive series this year...and it better be Rob Warner making the play-by-play call again, or i will watch it with some appropriate punk music playing...
  • 5 0
I thought Gwin was a second down just before he crashed.... it still would have been very close though if he hadn't crashed, I'll give you that!
  • 1 0
I think people will catch up to him. It happens every year when a rider finds a new way to be faster. It kinda happened with Hill. He had one banging season but in the next he had very close results to Greg.
  • 3 0
gwin was down by about 3 seconds when he crashed, moron. He was down a second on the 1st split. hart entered that wooded section at 2:16 and gwin entered it at 2:19, FACT just accept it dude.
  • 1 0
"hillman-hunter", I liked your comment because you actually researched your facts before posting - something "thevondals" would do well to remember!

How heavy is your new GT Fury bike compared to your old one?
  • 2 2
Ummm, do you say no to SOFA...?
  • 1 4
yelyayan1976 well a 2006 demo 9 haha lots less lighter for shure haha still dont know whats better if the GT Fury or the Status, components GT but how does it works its a mystery for me haha what do you guys think?
  • 3 3
Depends on the money you can spend... the Fury will be much more expensive than the Status....

What I can say is: the GT ID suspension is one of the best suspension designs out there... In the suspension deparment way better than the Status.
  • 1 1
Bringing home the Athertons - HUGE Boost in every sense fot GT!!!!!

  • 1 1
really? didn't know that.....so just to make my point: getting bored of seeing headlines of the athertons - it is hard not to see the headlines! so I'm bored of it even without reading the headline nor the article, whatsoever i made the effort to scroll down (without reading) and post this comment

no, how could he do that? he should have stayed with Commencal!!!
  • 3 1
I read, that the Athtertons wanted thier bikes to flex, now he is promoting stiff frames.... Hope to see Fairclough and Hill tearing it apart this season...
  • 2 0
Servus! To be honest I like Commencal as a company, but I feel personally stoked to see the Athertons on GT, GT makes great bikes, even if I truly dont like the aesthetics of the Fury.... I foresee them more on the podium this year... mfG,
  • 1 1
