Giant Bicycle has donated 1000 units of a special ‘Emergency Edition’ hardtail mountain-bike specifically designed to assist emergency crews involved with the recent Japan earthquake disaster. These unique bikes will be used by local emergency organizations and volunteers to navigate rough terrain and damaged roadways that are no longer accessible by vehicles. The bike itself is a limited production model based off of the Giant Rock series of mountain bikes, and is aptly named the “Special Edition Quake Reconstruction” model.

To better highlight its emergency usage, the framesets are painted in high-visibility yellow with emergency red branding, and carries the logo “Emergency Reconstruction Assistance” on the seattube. Each bike will be delivered fully-assembled and will come equipped with useful safety features that include front suspension, 26-inch off-road tires, rear luggage rack, and front headlight. Immediately after the earthquake, Giant altered its standard manufacturing schedules to accommodate immediate production of the unique bicycles. Delivery to the affected regions is expected to take place by late April.

So many people in the world help us and thank you so much, but we dump radioactive water at sea... shame on us.
  • 1 2
ya. but since we got a democratic governor, the plant will be shut down within years. The old goal was to continue going straight through 2020, but its all changing.
  • 9 0
i think the brand nuke proof should of sent their bikes over, japan needs those more given their current situation?
  • 1 0
@deadatbirth TMI reactor 1 is licensed through 2034. I am suprised you disagree w. me after what happened at three mile island before. Your reasoning is now... f*cked.
  • 4 0
this is unacceptable, these people need glory's !!! but great idea, awesome to see no other manufacturers have done this....
  • 1 1
 that is sarcasm right? ^
  • 2 0
 what do you think?
  • 1 0
welllllll. to say that it is awesome that no other manufacturers have done this is a mystery to me. He might be a huge giant supporter. And he might also be dissapointed with the other bike companies. Thats what I am confused about.
  • 2 0
wtf does TMI have to do with anything??? your state is primarily run by nuclear power. mine isnt.....72% of your states power comes from ONE plant alone and if wasnt for the inept people running it, it would continue to provide your state with clean energy. nuclear power is one of THE cleanest and safest forms of energy.
im not agreeing with you at all. and btw, your governor had nothing to do with your state not renewing the Yankee power plant's lease.
  • 1 1
we have 500,000 people. its not that great of an accomplishment. We could easily be using windmills that dont POLLUTE THE EARTH FOR MILLIONS OF YEARS YOU DUMB f*ck. I really dont see solar panels, or windmills as a dangerous threat. Nuclear radiation is different. you show absolutely no proof for the idea that our governor had nothing to do with the state not renewing the plant. I have actually met him, and I teach his little cousin how to mtn bike, as well as living 5 miles from his house. It was his main goal to not let VY continue. You are so full of lies. Just quit now.
Do you think the town is not divided on the issue that I live in? I live 20 miles from vermont yankee. It is not the inept people that are running it at all. They do a fine job, and it is really the engineers that created that stupid monstrosity. I mean, its the same exact type of plant that is in Japan. Lets see... the one in japan wasnt ENGINEERED to be safe through a tidal wave or earthquake or anything. By the way, the situation in Japan is now worse than Chernobyl all those years ago. I don't know what you are thinking but if you think Chernobyl was clean compared to other energy sources, than you are just absurdly wrong.
  • 1 0
 that was long....
  • 2 0
do you know what a Senate is and how it works? the VT SENATE voted 26-4 to not extend the contract, NOT the governor. im sure you also know that the plant's license WAS extended for another 20 years right? and what the hell does you meeting him have anything what so ever to do what happened in your states senate?? or teaching his kid how to ride??
if you think solar panel and or wind farms can make up 72% of your states power, then you are dumb or naive.
the people running that plant did not help their cause by any means. im sure you remember the radiation leak that got into the water table right? and the cooling tower collapse?
Fakashima Daiici WAS designed to survive a earthquake. EVERY SINGLE building in Japan is designed to be earthquake proof, by LAW. it was though under-engineered for such a large tsunami and or to withstand the 4th largest earthquake ever to happen.
nor is the disaster in Japan ANYWHERE NEAR the huge disaster that happened in Chernobyl. do you realize how many people died from the accident?? do you know what "level 7" means??

PLEASE stop talking. its insulting. your comments show you know absolutely NOTHING about what is going on in your own state and the world. just watch any news channel and youll see how dumb your comments are. hell wikipedia can also show you how dumb you are.
  • 1 1
it was recommissioned, but the state is still shutting it down. there will clearly be some suing involved next. So its really yet to pan out. My point is that I know him, and that is all. I was hoping to get it back to a BICYCLE debate. Your pro nuke yet you brag that your state has less nuke power than we do. fool. Again, we have 500,000 people. It is possible to power that many people with alternative energy.

Nuclear power shouldn't be in places where there is a dangerous fault line that is completely susceptible to earthquakes like these. I think its careless. What is your point with level 7? Do you think that chernobyl and japan are not comparable? Full of shit.
  • 2 0
it is possible to power your state's 650k people with alternative energy but if you think you can flip a switch and have wind and or solar power over night youre a fvcking moron. and no your state is NOT shutting down VY plant.
Chernobyl and Fakashima are NOTHING alike you dipsh!t. watch the damn news! do you know how HUGE of a disaster Chernobyl actually was??????? your stubbornness is unfrigginbelievable . do you realize how many people died just trying to clean Chernobyl??or how widespread the nuclear radiation went? or WHY it happened? or WHAT actually happened??
do yourself a favor before you utterly embarrass yourself some more and LEARN about wtf you are saying. how can one person be this dumb to what is going on around them??
please stop talking, unless you want to make yourself look like a bigger moron....i can do this all day.

This is a classic example of the mountain bike scene. everyone helps everyone else, no matter what. No difference between this and helping someone you dont know on the side of the trail with a flat tire. Way to keep the mtb community connected with everyone else. We need more companies in the world like this.
  • 6 0
Very kind to step up and help out with this, props to Giant.
  • 4 1
This is exactly why Giant is the biggest, best, most respected and most revolutionary bicycle organization in the World. They Step up to help others. Thats called Ethics and ethics sustains an organization.
  • 6 1
Yup business/corporate ethics! By doing so, not only do they help the people in Japan immediately, they automatically help themselves reputation wise as being seen as a company with a heart/human touch.

Its a very solid gesture on their part, and this is why companies like Giant keep growing! Smile
  • 4 0
Wicked to see Giant do this, as have many other companies who will have far less money than Giant and have given a far greater percentage of their income. Props to every company, and especially the individuals who have given up their lives in other countries to help the people of Japan. They are the people that deserve the biggest mention of all for their selfless acts. The knock on effect to their sales world wide an in Japan will be massive...
  • 4 0
infinite props to Giant. The world would be a much better if more people acted like this.
  • 3 0
That's a solid donation! Is this the first major bike company to step up? Whooo Giant!

Gota say though, cue Specialized and Trek doing the same...
  • 2 0
Wish we got help like this D:

We had our earthquake, only to have all the workers flown out within a few weeks and taken to Japan.

Sucks big time. The world needs more nice people.
  • 3 0
Giant has kindly offered to donate any bikes found floating in the aftermath of the tsunami to the people of Japan. Provided they get some free advertising out of it.
  • 5 1
Very nice Giant! ...They should be sent some Nukeproof's
  • 1 0
Great idea and a very generous donation by Giant, now what Japan could also use is some Bob trailers for these bikes and/or cargo bikes to transport even more supplys around .
