Dam that peddle section looks energy sucking

would be interesting to get 2 time measurements - one before and one after this section

 riders will taste blood
  • 24 0
It's definitely going to sort out the men from the boys!
  • 29 1
i just feel tired watching that!
  • 11 1
3.12 - is that rat boy taking a piss????
  • 8 0
no lol my bad. a. its not rat boy and b. its a photographer haha, nearly though
  • 8 0
@timlake, well, in this case, f*ck is very, very fast.
  • 17 0
Those table tops are huge! And I like how they paint the rocks red so they can see them while they're riding at mach 5!
  • 11 3
only reason he is going fast is because there is a massive frog behind him.
  • 6 3
Brosnan is going to wreak havoc on that pedaling section...
  • 9 1
cant wait to see danny hart on this ! just imagine the whips :O
  • 12 13
I don't understand why these guys are running dropper post...at their level, I would have thought they'd be standing up through ALL the pedaling sections...at least the winner will.
  • 13 0
i think danny'll die on that peddally section
  • 5 0
look at the standings from the timed session today. gracia got 1st and im sure its because he has been enduro training he gunned the peddally section

you would think they would use a nice pov camera

I think there is a little bit of evolution going on with DH right now and that flat section is evidence of it. In order for a sport like this to progress there needs to be some real competitive athleticism and by making race courses that reward BOTH skill and fitness it forces riders to bring their best game to the table on both the skill and fitness fronts.

 @ synaptonaut

With all due respect, this is WC DH racing, not Enduro or Super D. For real evolution of DH the DH part should be progressing.
  • 8 4
So maybe we should require dirtbikers and nascar/racing drivers to get out and run 3 miles in the middle of the race. You know, reward athleticism and all. I personally think DH should be 95% downhill technical skill and 5% pedalling
  • 2 0
Eh, it's just one track so I think it's completely fine to have one that has way more pedaling than others because it does show the best all-around DH racer or the one that's best at adapting to different situations. The differences between this track and Val di Sole, for example, are staggering (one extreme in cardio, the other in steep/tech) and at this level it is what is needed to really push these guys to their limits. There's no need to coddle these guys they can take it, haha. But Wil, I think some run the droppers because they don't mind the slight weight addition for the more power you get in pedaling strokes from sitting down as opposed to standing where some power would be lost in suspension travel bobbing. Personally I find that's the case in Enduro racing anyways so I can only assume.
  • 1 0
the top athletes pedal through tons of techy stuff too! thats how you win finding those extra strokes. I believe this is the longest pedal section in the world cup this year as most other tracks are steeper throughout.
  • 43 0
those jumps are like sx jumps
  • 33 0
seriously when he hit that first table its like "where is the landing? where is the landing? oh there it is"
  • 8 1
he was flying, imagine if he over landed! weren't they the same jumps that cg almost hit somebody in the air with his foot last year
  • 7 0
 Cedric... lol
  • 24 1
Bloody hell that's fast Eek all urges to race world up downhill just got destroyed
  • 11 0
Wicked fast - this track is WFO - the F1 of dowhnhill! It sure would be fun to ride it, even though I'd never clear those tables and gaps!
  • 13 0
How to kill a down hill racer that is used to "shorter" races wack a mammoth 1km flat dash in the middle!
and near the start that is one massive cliff they have to go down
  • 12 0
Looks great! The pedal section seems way better then last year. Come on guys, there's nothing wrong with some pedaling to test the fitness of these riders. It is bike racing.

its a down hill race... you wouldn't see a flat section in a downhill ski race... that track looks brutal there was 2 technical sections tops?
  • 2 0
Lots of DH ski races have flatter sections in them, it's called gliding and it's part of the sport
  • 3 13
flag krash (Mar 15, 2012 at 17:03) (Below Threshold)
not to the point where the skier needs to start pumping with the poles like a xc skier... lame track, period
  • 13 1
 what is that middle section!?!?!?!?!?!?!
  • 2 2
 its so sickk?!!
  • 8 0
That was amazing. I don't think the pedaling section is a bad idea, it is a bike, it has pedals, and this way you can test the endurance of the riders. Pedaling is a big part of their training, so why not see who did their homework?
I just can't wait to see Steve Peat, Cedric Gracia, Brian Lopes, just gunning it on that straight and eat up everything as they go!
  • 1 0
 come on CG!
  • 5 0
Without a doubt the veterans will win this race, they have more endurance. Minnaar, Gracia, Atherton will be really tough to beat. Its not the most technical (Though that section in at the 1 min mark is really scary by my standards). Those tabletops at close to 70km/hr are ridiculous!!

Can't wait to see the Santa Cruz bikes perform with the new suspension.
  • 1 0
One reply two words: Steve Smith
  • 7 0
I feel knackered just watching that!
  • 7 0
I was out of breath just watching the middle section!
  • 7 0
Looks like whoever built crabapple hits has been busy in SA, shiiiiiiiiit
  • 5 0
 I imagined myself riding there!
  • 3 2
Bernard Kerr is a fast rider and its looks like he is flying. Its even hard to follow up wiht your eyes where the hell he is going and the rock gardens look like two feet lon but you get fooled becase of the speed that he is going over them. I can wait to see how the FASTEST (Gwin, Gee, Hart, Hill, Brosnon) will do on this track...!
  • 1 0
One of the most amazing DH courses I've seen in a long time! Love it. Amazing mix of technique, pedalling and jumping. Love those big jumps in the middle/final part! Even the surroundings are awesome. Way to go for the future of the sport.
  • 6 1
 Those are HUGE doubles
  • 2 0
That looks like extremely hard work. Those jumps were "HUGE" ,Lets hope it stays dry, too much rain on that and it will be like Glastonbury...
  • 2 3
 Loud Music . . . . I don't get your reference
  • 2 0
It usually rains for Glastonbury. It then gets really horrible and sloppy, possibly how that track would be if it rains hard..
  • 1 3
 So your saying;

If it rains, the track will turn to sloppy loud music filled with English people?

What tyres will the riders need for those conditions? Cut Minions, Dirty Dans?
  • 2 0
True test for pedaling performance of suspension and fitness of the rider. Might not be the riders choice of a fun track but important for presenting variety of the sport.
  • 1 0
Will the guys running droppers for the pedal section be constantly putting the thing up and down for the jumps? Or is it a case of just puting it up once and hitting the jumps with it raised?
  • 2 0
its not that bad because you can hit the smaller ones with it up like the sx jumps
  • 3 0
There are some pretty agro looking rocks on that track!
  • 3 0
Ok folks time to "Look at the time, Look at the time !" time again!!
  • 3 0
At 0:35 he sounds like borat...
  • 2 0
track looks sick minus the flat section from hell
  • 2 0
My legs would be SO Dead after a run like that.
  • 1 2
You know they don't run right... they ride bikes. But I know what you mean, my best hiking boots and my legs would still hurt if I tried to run down the course

he went over that rock section at 4.19 unbelievably fast
  • 2 0
about 1;00 i would have sharded
  • 2 0

  • 2 0
Crap those tables are huge. I got butterflies just watching him soar.

  • 2 0
Tilt camera upward a bit more?
  • 2 0
different tracks for different challenges... thats a good thing imo.
  • 1 0
notice how you didn't hear any chains or parts banging on anything! that is a truly sweet bike whatever it is!
  • 1 0
so why didn't he slow down over the rock sections.....I literally clenched my bum cheeks during those parts. holy.
  • 1 0
that was fast, but its insane to think the winning runs were about 25 seconds faster
  • 1 0
My legs and lungs burn just watching that
  • 1 0
that middle section, thats going to sort out who has put in the time in the off season...
  • 1 0
Why did every official on the course blow a whistle?
  • 3 0
It's so people in the section ahead know a rider is coming so they get the hell out of the way! Or prepare to take a picture etc...
  • 2 0
 Brrrrap brrrrapp
  • 1 0
Track looks soo fun fun kinda sketchy.
  • 1 0
Now this sorta thing is my bag BABY!!!!
  • 1 0
that course looked way sick! pretty gnar in the steep section too
  • 1 0
This reminds me of Fontana.... Way worse than the wall!
  • 1 2
the track looks quite flat at some areas and quite peddly at some bits. but when the good parts come it looks fuckin amasing !!
  • 1 0
i have always wondered what does the whistling mean???
  • 1 0
its to warn the next post that a rider is coming...
  • 1 0
 what do you mean post
  • 2 1
post = Next person with a whistle / track 'official'
(Note that official is a loosly used word in this circumstance)
  • 1 0
That last rock garden is just a blind huck!
  • 1 0
 Those tables are fucking huuuuuge!
  • 1 0
Damn that's taking DH to a whole another level
  • 1 0
impressive rocky gardens on the final section! rolling fast!
  • 1 0
 Rad track!!!!! Good ridding.
  • 1 0
 wow
  • 1 0
 wicked!!!
  • 1 0
 I would be ruined!
  • 1 0
 beautiful track!
  • 1 2
why do they have to paint the rocks? i dont get it
  • 2 0
i believe they paint the sharp edges on them so riders avoid them or bunnyhop them or whatever to reduce chances of flats
  • 10 0
When you can ride that fast it will make perfect sense. Sun spots and rocks look exactly the same, and going from open sunlight into the woods you are running blind for a moment. A little orange paint goes a long way in helping to spot lines and stay on course. Small details that help keep the speeds for everyone watching at home.
  • 1 0
my question is why they whistle when the pass
  • 17 0
because blowing a whistle takes less effort than yelling "get the f--- outta the way!!!" in 4 different languages.
  • 1 0
they blow the whistle every time a rider passes the whistle guy so the rider in front can hear whether or not theres a rider close bihind or if the rider behind is gaining on them.
