Island Cup DH Opener has record numbers!

Apr 12, 2006

The 1st Island Cup Downhill race of 2006 was held in Nanaimo on April 9 with record numbers attending. With over 125 racers including a number of competitors from the mainland - Team Squamish, a core group from Rocky Mountain, and even an entourage from south of the border, 2006 is looking like a promising year for Island racers.

The Nanaimo course was in great condition, with light rain on Sunday making cornering a little tricky. The times were in the 1:40 - 2:30 range, with such a short course there was a tie for 1st place in the expert men's category. In my opinion there should have been some kind of shootout or manualling competition to settle the score.

Expert Men's Results:
1st place at 1:47:66 Dean Tennant and Dan Espeseth,
2nd place at 1:50:28 Robbie Sherman,
3rd place at 1:50:43 Matt Neilson.

Expert Women's Results:
1st place at 2:14:44 Adrienne Miller,
2nd place at 2:22:64 Miranda Miller,
3rd place at 2:29:67 Glenowyn Carlson.

Info on the next Island Cup Race:

Screw the Easter Egg hunt...Race a DH instead. After some confusion on insurance issues, the # 2 race in the renowned Island Cup DH series is a go!!

This Sunday April 16th at the Hartland Bike park the Oak Bay Bikes Massive is once again bringing racing action of the dirt kind to the South Island. The course is a mix of old school singletrack, a wee bit of fireroad and a whole lot of fun! Old School racers will remember the " Kung Fu Downhill " of 1998 and this is the same course..The course is best ridden on a 5 & 5 bike but if you only got a sled ..bring it! The race starts at the top of " Snakes and Ladders " follows down to " Gay Patio " onto " Centre Fold " and to the little gnarly trail the leads to the TTA at " Pooh Corner ".

Remember this is a fun race so leave the attitude at home. For more info call Matt at Oak Bay Bikes ( 250-598-4111) or e-mail matt@oakbaybikes.com

Registration starts at 8ish with the race going off at high noon..See you all there.
