KTM, the orange and silver brand that has been rocking the off-road moto world, displayed a massive number of bicycles at Eurobike ranging from carbon road racers, to all-out downhill racing rigs, to a wildly powerful electric-powered freeriding prototype. KTM’s downhill machines are regularly seen on the European DH circuit, and by the looks of ts lineup, we should expect a North American invasion soon.

Phinx 1.29
Phinx is KTM’s name for its lightweight trailbike lineup that includes 29ers and 26ers. The Phinx 1.29 is a sharp looking 29er with 100 millimeters of travel on both ends, which is substantial for a big-wheel bike. The rocker-link, single-pivot rear-suspension uses a ‘floating shock mount’ with the lower shock eyelet pivoting on an extension of the swingarm, ala Trek's Full-Floater system. Lots of manipulated tubes and beautiful welding and construction on the Phinx chassis make it a stunner. The Phinx 1.29 features Shimano XT components, a Fox RP23 shock and 32 Float 29 RL fork, weighs a reported 12.7 kg (27.94 pounds) and costs 3,999 euros.

KTM Phinx 1.29: (clockwise) Hydroformed tubes and beautifully curved, forged pivot locations and dropouts made the matte-finished KTM 29er stand out among the many clones at Eurobike • Ritchey’s no-rise handlebar is a perfect solution to compensate for the abnormally tall head-tube height of a 29er • KTM’s rocker link suspension keeps the weight low in the frame and the floating shock arrangement minimizes stress on the front triangle • Tubular, forged-aluminum dropouts are an original touch.

Aphex
KTM makes a mean looking DH frame. The Aphex is a conventional single pivot suspension that drives a massive swing-link. Shock forces are captured by a massive, formed aluminum cross-member which should make the Aphex immune to flat landings of any magnitude. Two shock mount positions on the link offer 200 or 230 millimeters of rear-wheel travel, and there are additional adjustments for wheelbase (440/460mm) and head angle changes (64/66-degrees). The finished look of the Aphex is due to intelligent design and the use of dedicated forged parts at junctions, brake-caliper mounts, and dropouts. Drivetrain is Shimano Saint and suspension is split between a Fox DHX RC4 shock and a RockShox Boxxer World Cup fork. Cockpit and wheels are Syncros. Price was stated at 3999 euros.

Aphex Details: (clockwise) Massive amounts of hydroforming gives the KTM Aphex a moto-looking chassis • Internal cable and hose routing (big fad this year in Europe) make for a clean profile • KTM’s choice of the RockShox Boxxer World Cup is not surprising – the WC fork has earned a lot of respect on the World Cup Circuit this season • Wildly tapered tubes beef up the Aphex bottom bracket area • A close-up view of the Aphex rear dropout shows KTM’s attention to detail.

Egnition
Theoretically, KTM’s Egnition electric freeride bike is a pedal-powered, electrically assisted bicycle. Its monster chainring and single, 24-tooth rear cog, however, hint at the awesome power of the Egnition’s 1200 watt drive motor. The 170-millimeter-travel chassis is the same as KTM’s Aphex DH racer, with a few mods to handle the added weight of a motor drive and the 48-volt battery pack which is ‘hidden’ below the downtube. Only 88 Egnition bikes are slated to be built in 2012. No price was mentioned, although the KTM official who showed the bike said it was less than 10.000 euros. He also mentioned that the Egnition was not intended to be a DH shredder, rather, it was designed for a rider who wanted to get to the top of the hill without a lift, and then enjoy the easier runs down the mountain. The battery is good for three runs up the hill as long as you coast the descents. Coast? Yeah, right!

KTM Egnition Details: (clockwise) In profile, the Egnition looks a bit bulky, but far less so than any motorcycle • All the wires and cables running to the rear hub seem like a weakness in the design. Two housings drive the internally geared hub, one wire powers the sensor that governs the ‘Clean Mobile’ electric drive • How about this for single-speed gearing on a 60-pound DH bike? • The 1200-watt drive motor runs concentric with the bottom bracket and the 48 volt battery is protected by a plastic housing below the downtube.

Elycan
And, KTM has an e-powered Trailbike as well. The Elycan is powered by an in-the-hub Bionix motor drive, so it can use all the normal gearing that one would expect on a 120-millimeter-travel dual-suspension mountain bike. The Elycan’s 40-pound weight figure is offset by the fact that you can climb with power assist for up to 100 kilometers. Suspension is by DT Swiss and the human-powered part of the drivetrain is Shimano XT.

Everything looked fine until the electric monster showed up. To me, that is legitimately not a bike.
  • + 95
about 80% at the eurobike was about electric bikes. every company needed to show some kind of electric development... it was boring as all hell.... seriously if you need a motor to ride DH, AM or FR then there is somethin wrong with you... let us mountain bikers be mountain bikers!
  • + 19
They posted wrongly, those were suppose to be posted on motorbike section.
  • + 15
How to ruin AM,FR & DH bikes with an electric motor, pretty much useless in my opinion.I can understand that city bikes are electric for your commuting days in the city or other places on the road. Most people are fit enought that they don't need a motor to take your mountain bike up the hill and having a electric motor makes mountain biking boring & less fun.
  • + 13
That electric bike looks like a birthing whale! awful.....
  • + 7
I had no clue KTM was starting to make mountain bikes...Trippy.
  • + 4
thanks for the laugh spongebomb!! as far as the bikes go, i'll take an Aphex, it's a pretty sweet looking ride. but electric bikes are NOT mountain bikes.
  • + 1
 those bikes are behemoths
  • + 2
Not to mention the look like they are about 60lbs a piece... lol
  • - 1
everyones dissing the electric bikes but this is pretty crazy that out of the blue with no warning ktm just chucks out a whole range of mountain bikes
  • + 2
i don't get what the value is on taking the "cyclist" out of cycling. If i wanted a moped or a CR,YZ,KX, or a KTM, I'd just go buy one and not try to "bolt" it on to my mtnbike. just my take.
  • - 1
I don't get why people are so annoyed with the advent of electric drive trains on these trade show convention pieces. No one is telling you to buy them. It's a way for the industry techs to push their boundaries and explore more possibilities. Electric city commuters have already been done. We already know what a moped is, or a Whizzer. sometimes novelties are the creation zone before the truly game changing products pop up. SEE LASER DISCS. Also, how many places could suddenly become a freeride/ downhill venue without a chair lift?
  • + 3
KTM mountain bikes have been around for years... and they have always looked sick. electric bikes are just a fad. i mean obviously there obviously just gonna die out since about 3 people like them. But out of all the ones i have seen ktm has the sickest rides.
  • + 9
While I am not a supporter of E-bikes, why should able bodied people have all the fun? What about the rider that permanently lost the use of a leg due to an injury or illness? Should they just give up riding all together?

I am going through a long injury rehabilitation and know that its like to want to ride and not be able to. If I was in a position where I lost the ability to fully self power a bike I would be looking at something like a electric assist bike to get me on the trail again and I am sure that many of you that are putting them down would be too. You just have to look at them from the other side of the fence to see their use and need.

Still there will be fat lazy people buying them that don't "need" them
  • + 1
minotro- I'm not annoyed at all but would you buy one?
  • + 2
im with pimpedaline, its similar to motorbikes an trikes , still tho at $10,000 an 60lbs you could get a good dirtbike
  • + 1
 pimpedaline has a good point.
  • + 2
HOLY SHIT. KTM makes bikes? DAMN. wheres honda and yamaha and husqavarna? actually no.. they should stay out. hahaha
  • + 1
I heard that KTM has approached Ken Block so as to develop a powerful e-shifting combined with e-handbrake, ABS + ESP at Gymkhana 5. All specifically designed for its electric DH bike as KTM wishes to participate in next year's Dakar rally with that bike instead of its regular motorbike as an ecological action.
  • + 1
@ ryanreishripper: Greg Minnaar won World Cup series on a Honda DH bike back in 2005.

ok eventhough i am not really down with the idea of electric bikes, and as much as i think that the companies (and as a result mtbikers) are kinda losing the point here, i have to admit that from all the shitty e-bikes that are out on the market, this is by far the most practical and best looking......
  • + 1
I would find it hard not to kick someones ass that shows up on top of whatever mountain I am riding thats riding a electric assist bike. Or bag on him till he takes his little whinny bike off the mountain.
  • + 1
electric bikes are only really good for road biking. they help you get to the top, but that's what your legs are for. on the way downhill those huge batteries will make the bike really hard to maneuver and will probably make the suspension act weird
  • + 2
ok i wouldnt have a probiblem with having an electric motor for my dh so i can get to the top but when im at the top i can just take it off with no problamo but i am totaly against every thing elss let a bike be a bike and a dirt bike be a dirt bike you get me
  • + 2
KTM?don't they make moto bikes? What are they doing making mt. bikes?
  • + 3
(victim talking to a police officer) Hello, officer, I want to report an assault. (Policemen) What happened? (Victim) I was just minding my own business riding my electric motorized mountain bike, when I came up to a group of downhill riders. (Policemen) So? (Victim) well they started making fun of me and when I stood up for myself they beat me up. (Policemen) Why would they do such a thing? (Victim) Because I am riding a Electric Mountain bike. (Policemen) Well did you get a good description of the assailants? (Victim) no not really.. (Policemen) Well under law I will have to write you a ticket for riding a motor vehicle in a non motor vehicle park. (Victim) This sucks......
  • + 4
i would never ever f*cking ride an electric freeride bike... wtf! are they trying to mkae kids even fatter?!?
  • + 18
3999€ DH bike - with Hussefelt cranks. Come on!
  • + 15
Electric Mountain Bikes..... sorry, sorry, electrically assisted --- Ganbei looks away in disgust…!!
  • + 10
Could anyone in good conscience hummmmm their way up a trail past/with/behind other MTBers without feeling like a total douche. Likewise I'd imagine you'd be laughed off the trail by the uplift rig.. I can't see it. Maybe this is the first resistance to change and in 10 years we'll all be riding them...

No, actually we won't..
  • + 8
What the f*ck is this "electric powered freeride bike"?! Are they retarded or something? Man I really loved KTM till this point, I can't believe that they came up with an idea stupid as this... Frown
  • + 10
As an fyi: there is no business tie between the motorcycle company and the bike
company. They only share the name.
  • - 1
Well actually the bikes are just the mountain bike branch of KTM. It is the same company, but a different section. Just like how Fox makes suspension for automobiles as well as bicycles, and Maxxis makes car tires and bike tires.
  • + 5
You're wrong, as loitesberger told you, it's been a while since KTM (motorcycles) sold the cycle branch. Nowadays they only share a name, nothing more, nothing less.
  • + 1
Asides from KTM cycles still being a subsidy of KTM. Unless something changed in the last few months, because the stock options for both were under the same name.
  • + 2
KTM Fahrrad GmbH is totally independent of KTM sportmotorcycles AG. KTM Fahrrad GmbH is not actually traded at the stock exchange. Link to the organisational structure of KTM sportmotorcycles AG - company.ktm.com/Organigramm.99.1.html. Basically what happened is, that in the beginning of the Nineties, KTM (who were producing motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles under the same umbrella company) went bust and got split into three independent companies. KTM sportmotorcyles, Ktm Fahrad GmbH and KTM Kuehler GmbH.
  • + 5
sortafast: KTM is austria's no.1 selling brand, theyve been at it for a while, and the pics oh the aphex dont do it justice, its actually pretty interesting in the flesh( saw it @ ausbike)

fairly sure they are up there in German sales too.
  • + 7
Sweet! I love the paintjob from the Aphex !
  • + 12
Electric mountain bikes are stupid. Its either a mountain bike or a dirtbike, pick one.
  • + 4
ELECTRIC FREERIDE BIKE - when that will catch on, freeride will officially die.
  • + 3
Well, I think that anybody can complain about the bikes if they - don't use a truck to shuttle, or don't use a ski lift to get to the top of a run. If I could zip up a shuttle road with out a truck that would be awesome. This is far far from a dirt bike (about 40hp far). The price is crazy high right now, but kudos to ktm for increasing the options available to us. Instead of being close minded about something new, open your minds to innovation. This could be huge in the future for keeping riding areas open, its silent, non polluting, and a heck of lot less intimidating to a non downhiller than a diesel full of 10 bikes. Think farther than just today.
  • + 2
There is this disabled guy in my town who rides an electric bike.

They are perfect for people like him. Giving him the freedom to ride bikes.

But not inventing and wasting millions of pounds / euros developing electric bikes for this purpose.
  • + 4
I don't see the harm of electric DH bikes. Sure they are heavy and inconvenient for now but they have got to start somewhere to make improvements.
  • + 3
A good place to start would be making an electric motoX then surely. Not attaching a motor on to a pedal bike... defeats the whole object.
  • + 3
And it's not as if they're holding a gun to your head and saying "buy this or die"
  • + 1
T1mb0 - they did start there, they made an electric motoX

www.dirtrider.com/news/press_releases/141_1003_ktm_zero_emission_sportmotorcycle_electric_bikes/viewall.html

KTM know their shit when it comes to strapping electric motors to bikes, Not that I would buy one tho...
  • + 1
Thats the other KTM company though isn't it...
  • + 1
I say DH bikes specifically because we don't ride DH with the intentions of pedaling uphills. And enduro/XC bike with a motor does completely defeat the purpose of riding.
  • + 1
KTMs dirtbikes suck im sure there mtbs will too. wait til u have to work on em itll be 100 times more expensive to get parts it was 300 bucks just to get a back fender for my ktm . and besides their mtbs are probably like 50 lbs the look like behemouths.
  • + 2
they won both MX1 and MX2 championships last weekend, clearly they dont suck that bad now do they. Not to mention all the enduro and rally wins. And they make hands down the best 2 strokes too.
  • + 1
For all of you people that think that KTM aren't very good..you're completely wrong. KTM is a huge bike manufacturer in countries such as france and spain. If you go to races you ONLY see KTM's. They are incredible bikes with incredible geometry. i owned a 700 euro KTM and it had better geometry than some of the 1500 pound specialized hardtails. Before you judge, ride the bike you're critisizing, because KTM make truely incredible bikes.
  • + 3
1: why is everyone making crap'y electric bike?????

and 2: that 29. er is well nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
  • + 1
I have been riding KTM motorbikes for years both on and off road.. I think the new push bikes look wrong.. I would believe the apex frame was first designed around the electric motor. At least that is what it looks like. KTM came up with a great electric bike not so long ago. Way better than what we see here. They obviously need to split the departments, push bike , electric bike , motor bike.. simple.. disappointed I am ....
  • + 1
Wow I thought Mt. Bikers would be more open to geen power. I think it would be cool to have a supercross track in my backyard. in the middle of the city, not lift tickit. Just you and your buddys having a fun time. It's just something different that could be alot of fun!!
  • + 1
electric bikes look lake a grannys bike with it massive forms,no matter even if it are made in carbon fiber, it look pretty ugly,i can watch an orange patriot and a 224 with better eyes, but looking at the egnition i feel sad,it could be a nice bike without that electric motor :/
  • + 2
Am I the only one who thinks it would be epic to have that electric bike to scoot around town?? You could find some awesome shortcuts commuting on a 60 pound 7 inch travel "bicycle"
  • + 1
KTM is selling a lot of bikes, but the KTM bicycle company has nothing to do with KTM motorcycles. Their knowledge would be great for making a downhillbike and years ago KTM motorcycle also wanted to produce bikes, but the bicycle company went to law... At KTM bicycling, nobody is into downhilling as we can see at the goemetry, but for the price they are well specd...
  • + 1
i dont follow the DH comps too much but why am i now hearing about people using electric bikes in competitions now? if it has a motor it does not belong in a BICYCLE race. it completely defeats the purpose and also gives an unfair advantage! but thats just me and like i said; i don't follow these styles that much so don't flame if you dislike my opinion.
  • + 1
Everyone is bashing on electric bikes without ever trying one intended for performance rides maybe you'll want one someday.... I beieve that this will give a plus to our rides when technology is there
  • + 2
I love KTM's motorcycles. Are they finally gunna sell these in the US?

Motor is dumb. Scratch the electric bikes and work on getting world wide.
  • + 3
 Shit I can't read...

"we should expect a North American invasion soon"
  • + 2
phinx looks sick But to me KTM will always be a moto brand not a bike brand And i really hope all bikes arn't going to be electric in the future , it just ruins the fun
  • + 1
I can just imagine the debates that will ensue if electric bikes become popular: If a wilderness area is closed to moto bikes, but open to mountain biking, are electric mountain bikes aloud?
  • + 3
The Egnition looks like it's pregnant. Would be sick if someday a mini DH bike would pop out Smile
  • + 1
When the manufacturers catch up to the hobby guys you guys might start to like electric bicycles a little more...

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziFWmyvxGWI
  • + 1
Be interesting to see how hard of a hit KTM takes on this. Just like when Cannondale lost their but trying to venture into dirt bikes and atvs.
  • + 3
how do you jump a 60 lbs freeride-bike?!??!??
  • + 1
funny they dont show you what these overpriced bikes might cost. remember your buying the name looks alot like a giant or a felt
  • + 1
All these bikes look so expensive for what they are built with. Or is it me? Are all bikes going to be more expensive in 2012?
  • + 3
Hmmm... my range is up to 100km too!
  • + 3
So spongebomb is technically a sex offender. Look out.
  • + 3
I like the Elycan, Plenty of potential to do some epic singletrack.
  • + 1
is this gonna be like the Honda DH team that had bikes, but were never sold? But seriously, KTM make motorcycles or mountain bikes. Don't halfassedly combine the 2.
  • + 1
Ive had a KTM tribute from 2008 and it was amazing, I've just orderd a new rachet today and glad I have! I would trust KTM bikes over any other bike brand! Smile
  • + 1
Apart from when you don't ride it for a month in whistler because you thought it was cracked in multiple places? Sounds about right.
  • + 1
It's nice that Aphex has so many adjustments but I don't think anyone would like to ride with 460mm CS or a 66 head angle in a DH bike:] They should re-think that...
  • + 1
holy duck! the chainstay is 10cm longer than my chainstay!!!! I mean, can't compare a dirt mtb and a downhill bike, but still.....
  • + 4
 SOOOOO UGLY!
  • + 1
 Agreed to the max.
  • + 2
 Fucking gross, all of them.
  • + 2
 they should stick to motorcycles.
  • + 1
they have been making pushbikes for over 10 years
  • + 1
Interesting how the XC and the DH bike has the same price! ...which would you choose? lol
  • + 1
The Elycan looks quite good for an electric bike, That ignition one looks shit though...
  • + 2
No Horst link on KTMs?? When did it happen?
  • + 1
When they decided to try and sell in the US.
  • + 1
i have all the power i need in my legs and abs. i dont need an electric motor, thank you.
  • + 2
most creative bike line up I ever saw.
  • + 1
I wish they would take there bikes of those bloody stands to photograph them ?
  • + 1
These are terrible... just terrible. I love KTM, but they missed big time with these bikes.
  • + 1
Please stop putting motors on bicycles... if we wanted a motorcycle... we'd buy a motorcycle...
  • + 1
Was it cracked in multiple places though haydon? No. Was toms cracked when he thought it was? No
Smile
  • + 1
at least they have done away with the bolt on headtube of the last 2 years on the Apex. still no likey
  • + 1
WP suspension on these bad boys would be rad, to keep it full KTM status
  • + 1
its a completely different company, KTM bicycles is completely separate from KTM motorcycles. Different owners, different everything except the name. Kind of confusing really.
  • + 1
And thats why they should stick with making dirt bikes...
  • + 1
 Junk, just like there dirtbikes
  • + 1
motorcycle company.. strange that apex looks like a tank though!
  • + 2
 stick with dirtbikes
  • + 1
 KTM’s Lineup Looks Promising – Eurobike 2011

NO THEY DON'T
  • + 1
Electric MTB bikes, cut, print, gay!
  • + 1
Who in their right mind would want an electric powered dh bike?
  • + 1
I know, I have never been downhilling and thought, I'm just not fast enough... I need a motor
  • + 1
Love my '09 KTM, solid and reliable
  • + 1
 the ELYCAN looks discusting
  • + 1
I didnt even know ktm made bikes? i thought only moto's?
  • + 1
Kind of a disgrace with the electric free ride bike. that's not biking...
  • + 1
Thanks to KTM, I can now go do some downhill with my grand ma Big Grin
