Kicking Horse Bike Park - Trail Crew Update #6

Aug 29, 2009

The straight goods on Kicking Horse Bike Park, straight from the trail crew's fingertips.

Amazing what a bit of low pressure can do. After that long July drought, it rained for almost a week since my last blog. You could almost hear the earth sigh as she absorbed the precious liquid. That change to the soil texture allowed us to finally get a good grip on Superberm. We spent about 6 days filling bomb holes and patching and extending berms. Don't just take my word for it though, here are a couple messages left on the unofficial "official" Kicking Horse thread: "Superberm was in the best shape I've been on it!" & "Just rode Superberm today and it is MINT."So how do you like that? Doesn't it just give you the warm fuzzies? Makes all the blood, sweat and tears worthwhile. Well, having a sweet trail to ride ourselves also makes it worthwhile.

More dirt was added to the dirt jumps, but they need some more shaping work done. We're letting them ride in for a while and then we'll return with the excavator and muck 'em around again. In fact, I think Scott is out there right now.

The new single black trail below Stickrock has been getting some more attention lately due to the hot, dry conditions we have again. I seriously doubt though that we will get it open by the end of this season. There is a lot of work left to do. But I promise it will be worth the wait.

Rock n Roll is getting a new entrance. The old one was falling apart anyway, then last year the ski slope grooming goliath ground it into gruel. The machine work is complete, with 8 successive berms similar in style to the middle of Blaster. We still have to clean those, and then dig out the connector to the old trail with our cracked and aching hand tools. Open this season? Not sure.

Final note: After Labour Day, the bike park willOUCH! ...what theOUCH?! ...what are you guysOWW?! ...

This is the marketing department of KHMR. We have temporarily incapacitated BlackCrowe to bring you the following announcements:

1. If you have a Bike Park season pass bring your friends and we’ll give them 20% off the regular day pass price.
2. Have a season pass for another bike park in BC or Alberta? Simply show your pass at Guest Services when you buy your ticket and you’ll get 15% off the regular day pass price.
3. Buy a ticket to ride on Friday at full price and get 15% off the day ticket price on Saturday and Sunday.
4. Book 2 nights accommodation and a 2 day Bike Park ticket through Kicking Horse Central and get 50% off your lift ticket.

See Signing out. BlackCrowe will regain consciousness momentarily.

...groan ...what happened? ...hey, who wrote this stuff? I can't erase it - they used ink! I've been sabotaged!

Oh well, I'll finish the thought: After Labour Day, the bike park will be open Friday to Sunday. Gasp! Summer is shutting down again. Better hurry, only a month to go.

Ride on.

Rode the hill on the weekend and it was SICK! I hadn't been there for a couple years and decided to go back because of all the trail updates that were making me want to go check it out and I wasn't disappointed. If you see the trail crew out make sure to give them props for all the effort they've put in to make that hill what it is today, awesome!

Really sweet trail building but... To me its not the way to build at a world class resort. Most of stick rock is build off of old trees down like you cant do that... But really sweet rail do just the type of thing you would build on the shore not a resort. I work for trailcrew up at sunpeaks resort and every wood work we build is on a 5 year plan and beleive me it will stand for 5 years. Everything we build is made with milled wood and is super solid on its on strainers not old trees.. Anyways i was just making a point i love golden and kicking horse i love the fact that it is au natural... Just for the fact of building for a resort bike park it has to be able to hold a dirt bike.....
