Knotty But Nice

The Durham Mountain Biking Association is at it again this year!

Every fall and spring season, the DMBA works on maintaining trails and building new sustainable trails within the York-Durham area outside of Toronto, Ontario.

On Saturday October 19th, the months of planning came to an end when 85 eager DMBA volunteers converged on the East side of Durham Forest in Uxbridge, Ontario, to add another awesome section of trail. Once again the club has raised the bar with regards to trail building in South/Central Ontario. This new trail, “Knotty but Nice,” boasts a total of over 200 feet of hemlock boardwalk, rock armouring and flowing bench cut.

Thank you to all the DMBA volunteers who gave their time for our trail building event and as always, a big thank you to Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority for their approval and assistance throughout this project.

You may wonder why we chose hemlock to build the boardwalk? Hemlock is a wood that has weather resistant properties similar to cedar, but comes at a fraction of the cost. Special thanks goes out to Vince D, Mike D. and Joe H., who possess the necessary construction skills and were able to lead our group of eager volunteers to complete the boardwalk sections. The two boardwalks were a large investment of time, consuming approximately 200 man hours over several weekends.

Support Your Local Associations

Joining the DMBA is not simply for the social ride aspect. Remember that it is the work of the DMBA advocacy and their membership dollars that put trails on the ground for everyone to use in the Durham-York region.
