LEZYNE 2008 Product Launch

by Luc 'Acadian' Albert
As some of you might remember, Micki Kozuschek sold Truvativ to SRAM back in 2004. I had a feeling it wouldn’t be long before he came back into the game with some new company. This time he decided to start a new bicycle accessory company called Lezyne. This project officially started on the 1st of March, 2007 - that’s when Dillon Clapp (formerly from Truvativ) left Bike Mag and joined Micki at Lezyne.
view from Micki's backyard - where do I send my resume?

For the past 5 months the folks at Lezyne have been focusing on product development and this past weekend unveiled their fist line of products that is planned to ship by the end of October. Lezyne will also have representation at Eurobike and Interbike. Their mission statement is to create accessories that are exquisitely designed, intelligently engineered and functionally complete.

Dillon and Connor

This past weekend we got a sneak peak at Lezyne’s hand pumps, Multi Tools, Tire Repair Kits, Tire Levers, Saddle Bags and Hydration Packs. Price are still to be determined, but Micki said this should all be sorted out by Eurobike, which is at the end of this month.

In this category you will find 3 hand pumps. The goal was to design a hand pump that is different than other hands pump on the market today. The high end Alloy Drive hand pump is beautiful, light and easy to use. Each pump will also come with proper mounting hardware so you can safely attach it to your bike.

Alloy Drive

The Alloy Drive is more geared towards mountain bikers. It produces 90psi and it all CNC machined aluminum – including the oversized piston and dual-anodized body. The Alloy Drive features a removable and reversible hose for Presta or Shrader that is stored inside the pump body.

Small Alloy Drive: 112g
Medium Alloy Drive: 128g

Pressure Drive

The Pressure Drive shares the same great features as the Alloy Drive hand pump but delivers up to 120psi, which is better suited for road tires. The Pressure Drive pump is also pretty light!

Small Pressure Drive: 90g
Medium Pressure Drive: 103g

Air Drive

The Air Drive is the mid-level offering in this lineup and will retail for about $20 USD. The handle is molded but the barrel and piston are completely CNC machined. Also missing is the removable hose.

Small Air Drive: 109g
Medium Air Drive: 126g

Just like the hand pump lineup, you will find 3 different multi tools in this category. When designing their multi tools, Lezyne’s goal was to make them more refined than the current offerings. An example of this is the way each tool is attached to the unit. Most tools out there use a “wrap around” style, where Lezyne use a centered pivot base so the pivot point is centered. This was possible in part by using cold forging process to create each bit. This gives you tools that are stronger and also lighter.

This tool was created without any compromise. The Carbon-9 and Carbon-4 feature bits that are forged and CNC machined from stainless steel. The side plates are carbon and all the fastening hardware is Ti. The chain breaker is hard alloy. I was pretty amazed by the weight…this tool is LIGHT! The Carbo-9 will retail for around $99 USD, while the Carbon-4 will be around $79 USD – again prices are subject to change.

Carbon-4: 46g
Carbon-9: 89g

This tool looks just as nice as the Carbon. All bits, bolts and the chain breaker are forged and CNC machined stainless steel. The side plates on the Stainless are made of high-polished aluminum. The 4, 13 and 21 compact tools will compliment any riding style. The 21 features a 60mm serrated blade, a tire lever and bottle opener – cheers!

Stainless-4: 58g
Stainless-13: 115g
Stainless-21: 150g

No you take a car apart with this one. The CRV features forged aluminum side plates and comes with either 4, 13 or 21 tools. Each bit is made of chrome vanadium and feature the same tool options as the Stainless models.

CRV-4: 58g
CRV-13: 115g
CRV-21: 150g

For those of you out there that still use patches, it’s time to rejoice! Now you’ll be able to do it in style!

Alloy Kit

This is more than your usual patch kit. All contained in a nice hollow-forged container, this kit comes with nine self-adhesive patches, a stainless tube scuffer and a tire boot. A rubber plus seals the kit from the elements.

Smart Kit

The Smart Kit includes six self-adhesive patches s well as a tube scuffer and tire boot. The items are conveniently packaged in a lightweight pouch.

Alloy Levers

Who doesn’t need tire levers? The Alloy Lever is made of polished aerospace-grade aluminum for an optimum strength to weight ratio. The tip has an aggressive shape to easily fit under the tire bead.

Matrix Levers

Same shape as the Alloy but made out of an engineered composite matrix.

The main goals when designing their accessories was to have all of them work together. You have 3 types of riders out there: the ones that like to carry everything in their jersey pockets, the ones that like to carry everything on their bike and finally the ones that like to carry everything in a pack. With that in mind, Lezyne designed integrated saddle bags dubbed Caddy. Three sizes to choose from and they all come with custom pockets ready to accept other Lezyne accessories like tools, patch kits and lever. Zippers are water resistant and help keep the elements out.

The largest in its class, the L-Caddy features special neoprene pockets to fit a patch kit, tire levers, large multi-tool, and cash. In the main cargo area you can fit up to two spare MTB tubes. The L-Caddy is still pretty thin and low profile and tucks nicely under your saddle – away from your legs. Offered in thee colors: Grey, Green and Brown

The M-Caddy shares the same great feature as the L-Caddy. The main cargo can store one mountain bike tube or two road tubes. Offered in thee colors: Grey, Green and Brown

The S-Caddy is for the minimalist. This mini pouch will fit one road tube, tire levers, patch kit and features an external pouch for a compact tool. Offered in thee colors: Grey, Green and Brown

Lezyne packs have the same great organizational features as their saddle bags. The Float Y shoulder straps enhance comfort while the water resistant zippers keep the elements out.

This bad boy is meant to carry a lot of stuff!! Specially tailored compartment accommodate tools, accessories, armor, MP3 player and up to six liters of water – that’s two full bladders. The Float Y strap will take the stress off your shoulders while the Vectorflow ventilation system keeps you cool. Offered in two colors: Grey and Green

Perfect pack for those longer trail rides. Can carry up to three liters of water, full flat repair gear, a multi tool and miscellaneous cargo comfortably fit in an organized water resistant shell. Also offered in Grey, Green and Brown.

Lean but mean! The low profile Smartpack 2L and 3L offer ideal organization for your riding essentials. Just like the Allpack and Powerpack, the Smartpack has neoprene compartments for one tube, tire levers, a multi tool, patch kit and MP3 player. Offered in three colors: Grey, Green and Brown

Just like the S-Caddy saddle back, this pack is for the minimalist rider. Holds two liters of water and has two opened pockets to stash away a few items.

Hydration Bladder

"The Bladder holds this much water"

Each pack includes a Lezyne Bladder. It features a high-flow hose and a Velcro routing strap. Two and Three liter models are available.

Shout-outs to Dillon for the invite and also to Micki and and his family for the hospitality.

the pumps look nice and tools as well. i wonder how well the compression straps on the big pack will work. The Dakine bags seem to be the best in category right now....it may take a 2nd effort to de-throne those guys. overall, there's some good ideas and stuff in there...
