Launch Bike Park at Spring Mountain (Pennsylvania)

Apr 10, 2011
by Steve Clayton
With the closure of Blue Mountain's bike park, the East Coast is down a lift access area. Thankfully the crew at Spring Mountain (Launch Bike Park) have put in the efforts to make their riding zone worth your travels. The opening day of Launch Bike Park at Spring Mountain in Schwenksville, Pennsylvania is April 23rd! We are opening earlier than any other bike park on the East Coast. This is our first full year and it should be an awesome season.

Launch Bike Park at Spring Mountain was open for a short time last year, from September to early November. During that time, we learned from riders what we needed to change to make the park even better for its first full season in 2011. We feel that the changes we made will make spending a day riding the park much more enjoyable. One of these changes is adding hooks for bikes on the lift chairs. Sadly, Blue Mountain's Vertical Earth Bike Park will not be opening this year and although it will be greatly missed, Launch is here to satisfy riders’ needs. Here is everything you need to know about Launch this year:

Location:
757 Spring Mount Road, Schwenksville, PA 19473

Hours and Important Dates:
Opening day: Saturday, April 23rd (We will not be open the 24th due to it being Easter Sunday)
Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays
(The park may be open a few weeknights in the summer but that depends on rider interest)

The park should be open every weekend depending on weather until late fall.

Prices:
Full day pass: $25
10 Ticket pack: $199

The 10 Ticket pack option is a great way to save some money if you will be riding at Launch Bike Park many times this year. You can use the tickets all yourself, or split them with your friends!

We will not be selling season passes this year.

Events:
Gravity East Series race on September 17th-18th
There are a few other events being planned but no dates are official yet.

The Trails:

2010 Trail Map

The trails at Spring Mountain are very technical and rocky. Last year, riders told us that they wanted a few easier trails. Because of this, we will be changing some of the trails to be easier for beginners and riders who just want some flow. But for those who love rocky downhill, we have plenty of that too.

I'll go over 5 of our many trails.

Wally's Leg:

Last year, this trail was listed as a black diamond due to the drops, wooden features, and rocks. This year, the trail crew is making the upper section of Wally’s Leg flowy and easier to ride. After the first section, Wally’s Leg becomes more difficult and the easiest way down the mountain is turned to another trail, the lower section of Walt’s Erector Set. Some of the features on the lower section of Wally’s Leg are tight berms.

The Bee Hive:

This short trail on the lower mountain has a few fun rock gardens that expert riders can ride through with speed. It is not too difficult and beginners will be challenged, but not out of their limits. The trail also has a difficult step down hip jump, but there are lines to go around it.

Walt’s Erector Set:

If you can ride it, this trail is one of the most fun on the mountain. It’s full of bridges connecting large boulders. Definitely check this out.

The Highlife:

This trail is really technical. It starts off fast with steep bridges and fast rock gardens, but once you get deeper into the woods, the trail becomes tight and slow. This one takes skill.

Jaws:

If you ride all the other trails and feel that they were no challenge, check out Jaws. Pictures do not do this trail justice. It is the steepest and rockiest trail on the mountain. At the end it becomes much faster and ends with a 13 foot gap over a fallen tree. Gnarly.

This is only a little bit of what we have at Launch Bike Park. Come check it out!

The trail is basically a field of boulders and is very steep, pretty gnarly

Yea, the triple black diamond thing is BS, but I am so pumped to see another east coast mountain putting some loot into MTB. We have a lot of potential out here. Just not enough effort and/or money. While we do lack the pure elevation numbers of the west, we certainly have mountains with plenty of elevation change. Isn't that whats really important? It's not like skiing/snowboarding where the high elevation gives you the sick snow. Highland is clearly the best we have by far, but realistically speaking it's on a tiny mountain. If places like Killington or Sunday River, or even Loon or Cannon mountain spent even close to the kind of money on MTB that Whistler does, it would certainly be on par.... BUT anyways. kambc...You can keep your elitist attitude, but it's based solely on some mythical bullshit you invented in your head. Highland is an amazing example of what's possible over here when some effort and money are put in. It's a tiny mountain that uses every inch effectively, and in a very short amount of time has turned into a mecca.

^ Yeah Mark has ran Highland perfectly since day one. I still remember there being only 4 trails and in only a couple short years, it's become a world class MTB resort, despite it's size. Also it sucks that Killington, Sunday River, Tenney, Sunapee have had trails before- even trail systems, for years but have never really developed it. But hey, once the mountains see it as profitable for them, it's going to happen and I cannot wait.
  • 1 1
when I first went there, I walked it. or at least tried to.
  • 2 1
yeah scott... I couldn't agree more. I was a patroller the last year Tenney was operational during the winter. Tenney alone could produce some ridiculous trails, and it's a lot bigger than Highland, but no where near as big as some of the other major resorts around here.

The triple black may have something similar to the Jah drop Wink I wish whistler was that inexpensive.

I love that I am getting negative propped above for hoping more east coast mountains start focusing on mountain biking. LOVE YOU PINKBIKE

 Hate, hate, hate...Really dudes?!

I've pushed up that mountain for years and finally last summer we got the owners to see the potential of a bike park. (The Buckman's are amazing people and are now true stewards of the Philadelphia MTB community.)

As mentioned by others, we're an entirely volunteer crew and have done a spectacular job in a short time. We built a proper bike park just 40 minutes outside center city Philadelphia. Yeah, the Mt is small - So what. Are we Whistler? Not even close. But, if you can ride this mountain you can ride anywhere.

Let's clarify a couple things:

Paper tiger...I think not bro. Come ride Jaws, High Life or Walt's Erector Set "balls out" top to bottom without unintentionally walking a section or going over the bars and you'll be stoked as all get out. Isn't that why we all ride anyway? Worth every penny of your gas and $25 ticket in my book.

As far as the triple black rating on Jaws - My fault. It got that rating because it really is no joke, and considerably more difficult than our other black trails. We didn't want every novice "father and son" unintentionally getting in way over their heads and breaking their neck. This year efforts have been made to make it a little more rideable, so the rating may change.

So haters - Listen DON'T spend your hard earned loot on gas to come ride our park - You obviously will hate it because you are naturally inclined to do so.

Everyone else - If you're interested in a great time riding some great trails with a super fun and positive crew, PLEASE come visit us - You won't be disappointed. Ask for Chad, I or any one of the crew would love to show you (until now...) the Philadelphia areas best kept secret.

See you on the Mt!

even if the trail rides down are 7-10 minutes it is still a place to ride! i have a great place to ride in the summer (sun peaks, silverstar) both less the 2 hours from home but both not open til june! i wish we had a hill like that to build on, all of you peeps working there go and thank the owners for allowing it to happen. good luck i'm sure it will be a great place if there are lots of bike junkies helping out. o and to the haters,, no one said you had to ride it,stay home!

to give brighton13 some credit here guys. He has built some of the most amazing stunts/jumps/trails that I have ever had the privilege of riding so don't think the comments come from someone who doesn't know what their talking about....that being said I think what is happening at Spring Mountain is a good thing!! I have been riding the mountain for over 10 years and remember the days of Mt Perk's Race Series...so I have seen it go from grass roots race series to crap and now back to a "mtb" mountain. I think to have a mountain that is willing to charge $25 for a lift pass the owners must be willing to invest some $$$ into the park. You can rely on volunteers to build a park that will bring in profit for the owners. There also needs to be a trail boss who has a vision for the mountain that has a good bit of trailbuilding talent. To create a mountain this is fun for all levels/styles of riding is not easy thing to do! I wish the very best for Spring Mt and the people that are putting their time in to build it. I just hope the support from the owners and visionaries can keep it moving forward to the mountain that it could be.....

He hasn't built shit with us at this place...its a lot easier to talk shit on a message board than digging out 500lb rocks to improve trail flow. If you don't like something, change it. Like Gingacal said, they are letting us build whatever we want. Let's see some of those amazing stunts, Brighton13. Show up and dig, pussy.

And why wouldn't they charge?? It costs money to operate a mountain. You might learn that nothing is free when you crawl out of mommy's c*nt.
  • 1 0
Maybe you can prove me wrong this year. Based on what was there last year brighton13 has a point that you can't just throw a shovel load of dirt and call it a lip or a landing. I think that if you are going to get serious about building or improving the trails there that you should have an end vision for the trail and not skimp on finishing the features just so you can get the whole trail done. It looked like there was a lot of good ideas that were started and never finished through out the trail system. If you want to charge people to come and ride they expect that things will be a little more finished off and thought out.
  • 1 0
Last year we wanted to open before it was too late and only had about 2 weeks to do any real trail work. Features or trails that felt or looked half finished were only to show people what we have planned for the future, when we have more time and money to invest into trails.

bklndub - Although I agree with the "put up or shut up" mentality, chill with the derogatory comments dude.

Brighton13, dhhardtail, hunsberger, jam-unam and your peeps. You're all basically local and obviously friends, so I looked at your bios to see if I recognized the locals trashing and not getting involved. We may know some of the same folks but I don't know any of your directly. More importantly, from that I see you all know your way around a bike A LOT more than the average rider, and obviously can build your asses off. So...Come help out. The Mt is providing product (wood and materials) and giving us carte blanche to do as we please. Be a part of making it sick.

I'm heading up the jump line construction, but unfortunately can't do a thing until the last piles of snow melt off the trail planned for it. It's a clean slate guys and will probably lay it out in a week or 2. Come out and help me lay it out and even build it if you're game. Brighton13 you received some props from others on your building skills, and the stuff I saw looks bad ass. Hit me up dude, I want your input. Chadstuff@verizon.net

Hope to hear from you.
  • 2 0
Agreed, you're probably a bit more level-headed than me. Just frustrating when everyone's busting their asses, to get comments from the peanut gallery trashing a place that's not even up and running yet, especially when the riders have free reign to build what they want. Apologies Brighton13, anyone's help would be appreciated. At least not deterring other possible riders from coming down would really be appreciated.

ANY MOUNTAIN, ANY WHERE, ANY SIZE that we can bike on is totally cool. Personal preferences aside, every single extra foot of trail to ride on is awesome! Mountain biking is not a one size fits all -
  • 2 0
I learned to ride there 10+ years ago when it was open the first time. It was one of the first places to have log rides and wooden structures built into the race courses, and a slalom course that was more jumps than gates. The trails are pretty much the same as they were then, but with some of the wooded stuff rebuild because the mountain was closed for years and things needed to be fixed up. The trails that are already there are good technical trails, but if it had some kind of dirt jump or slope style area it would be the perfect mountain to focus more on that type of riding than just downhill trails because the mountain is so small.

Anybody in the Philly area that wants to get involved please stop by the Launch Bike Park tent at The Rally in the Valley this Saturday. www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=13095
They will be selling ticket 10 packs for Launch as well (I think they might be discounted on Sat).
As far as trail building goes...
There is still time for you to get involved and provide some input on trails, obstacles etc. Some things have already been planned out and being worked on but more muscle to do some trail work is always appreciated. As long as you check in with Colby and give him your hours you'll be credited for the help and will get some free passes to ride.
It's going to be a good summer at Launch Bike Park this year!

The trails here are looking really good for riders of just about any skill level. Were not doing it for money or anything, just the fun of taking part in amazing trails at a nice mountain and making this a good year. if you dont like the place then so be it, dont come and ride.
  • 1 0
I liked riding here and I'm super stoked that there's a new place to ride close to home. My only complaint is that my stubby girl arms had a tough time hanging my bike in the hooks. I'll be visiting again soon anyway and may even bring a shovel to help. I build a mean berm Smile

Spring Mt is small and crammed! The only place I ever badly hurt my self, High life to tiolet bowl is the only good trail, The other trails are cluttered and tight and slow. When downhilling looking ahead is your best friend, not at spring, if you look ahead you are going OTB's. random shit everywhere. The lifts are so crappy they flung my brothers bike off the hook and slammed the ground. I went there twice. Giving it a second chance after the dissapointing opening day. Well I broke my leg at a simple spot on the Mt. The people are friendly and nice and helped pull me out of the woods but I have desire to ever go back. I MISS BLUE MT!!!

I am originally from PA, Rothrock Forest. I love the land and trails there however, a triple black diamond rating for your trails is unrealistic wilth only 100 vertical meters of descent. You don't say? Where I live now, our runs start at 2,000 +/- meters and we have green trails at this alt. One part of one of our simple black trails has a drop of 250 meters in 600 meters length. How do you come by your diamonds? Long live PA!
  • 2 0
I think everyone knows its not a real triple black, but its listed as that to keep people off it who shouldnt be on it. Just like the ski Mtns in the Poconos. There is rarely a legit diamond or double diamond, but they are labeled as such so Joe Blow from NYC dosent kill himself or someone else when hes on a pair of rental skis for the first time,

seen some new pics of walts eretor set and the trail looks great!! props to all who helped build this wonderful park! once again i say any where you can build and ride is a good thing

"With the closure of Blue Mountain's bike park, the East Coast is down a lift access area" Are they talking about Blue Mountain in Ontario, Canada or is there another DH venue with that name Im not aware of?
  • 3 0
No, i think its Blue Mountain in Pennsylvania. If Blue closed in Ontario, i'd be crushed....
  • 7 0
Yeah, its "Vertical Earth Gravity Park" at Blue Mountain in PA that closed. Ya wanna know why they closed? because they are putting in a water park. LAME!
  • 2 1
imagine if they did that to whistler! hahahaha ouuucchhhhh

Oh man!! I was sooo scared about Blue Ontario there for a sec...Sorry for your loss PA

Jesus when will the UK and Spain get some decent bike parks??
  • 1 0
we dont have huge mountains to dedicate to mountain biking. the ones that we do are protected. in the mean time, we cope with small relatively small trail centres. glen tress is pretty big though.
  • 3 4
haha thats clever editing to the map to make the bump look like a mountain. silly east coasters, i have to walk up that hill both ways in 2 feet of snow in my pyjamas. This article needs trail pictures...cause I want to see what could possibly be a triple black on the east coast.
  • 3 0
Im not sure why they put it as a triple black but it honestly doesnt look like a trail. Its very steep and just all loose rocks. slightly crazy
  • 5 0
There's always so much raging on the east coast. There are some great trails out there. You just have to know where to go. Theres alot of local jems too.
  • 7 0
we, in the eastcoast, don't have high mountain like you guys, but it only means that we will do shorter ride...not necessarely easier one. try the hidden tracks in msa and get back to me.
  • 2 0
Yeah, I see what you mean..there's hills in the south of England bigger than that 'mountain'. But you have to work with what you got. At least now you have some local, purpose built trails to shred, albeit a bit short. To put into perspective, I live near Aspen, Co where there is arguably some of the best ski resorts in the world and I STILL have to drive almost three hours to get to a decent bike park (WinterPark or Keystone)
  • 1 0
any good trails in aspen though? never been there but I wonder if the only reason they don't have a bike park is cause they don't want dirty bikers ruining the whole aspen image. it's too bad when they think like that.
  • 1 0
I am very excited to hear about this. Always a plus when another lift access area is available to help expand our sport across the east.
  • 3 4
Gingacal we hiked this last week just for shits and giggles and really there was a lot of giggling to be done quite honestly just looking at all of the hard work that was supposedly done if you consider raking a few pebbles out of the way and maybe throwing a shovel of dirt onto a landing. Great job.
  • 1 0
Keep giggling instead of actually putting work in. Makes sense.
  • 1 1
 You gotta know.
  • 1 0
"and riders who just want some flow." there was no flow last year, so anything would be a improvement. hopefully the lift isnt as sketchy as it was last year
  • 1 1
There will be 1 trail that has many berms and is very smooth and fast.
  • 3 0
"berms and smooth" arent necessary to make a trail flow. a lot of the trails that were cut last year, didnt make sense in their directions.
  • 1 0
A couple of us were there today working up on Walts. When I left I walked donw Wally's Leg and liked the changes that were made to make it flow a little better.

hope to see some helmet cams vids down the trails up soon. The more bike parks the better. IMBA UK and Forestry commision need to get some sorted in the UK.
