MSC Bikes / Descent-Gear.com NPS Round 1

May 2, 2008

MSC Bikes / Descent-Gear.com NPS Round 1, April 2008 at Ae Forest, Dumfries in Scotland.

Co-Sponsored by Monster Energy and Halfords Bike Hut.

So with the honeymoon period over and onto year two of the SPS run British Cyclings National Points Series. It was an almost unanimous decision that 2007 was a major step forward over previous years; only time will tell if Si Paton and Steve Parr are able to continue the momentum. The signs however look good, with new high profile sponsors in place, more riding time throughout the weekend and an awesome looking track in the shortest name place in the U.K: Ae.Words by Alasdair MacLennan

Ae Forest is a venue which has been in use for many years, and has seen several facelifts in the last ten years. However, since the last major update in 2003 with the introduction of the rock garden and more man made sections, little has been done to change the look and feel of the hill. Some riders loved that course with its fast and flowing BMX nature but there were also the detractors who thought it too simple with very little line choice. So it was perhaps time for a change and this is what we got this weekend. Things didn’t perhaps get off to the best start with heavy rain turning some of the newly created sections to a deep, wheel and axle eating bog that resembled a raging lava flow. Many were reminded of the infamous race at Rugog in 2006 and there were a fair number of disparaging remarks in the pits after riders had walked the course.

So what were the changes? Well things were different from the very start with the now familiar rocky start eschewed in favour of a new line cutting across the hill further to the left and through fresh heather. This soon became cut up and very boggy, leaving no doubt that Maxxis Wet Screams of Michelin Mud III spikes were going to be the tyre of choice. The first straight soon dispatched and you were upon a steep and rutted right hander which was more akin to a river of mud than any bike track but it soon worked its way down to the hard stones below and gave a surprising amount of grip which led nicely into the trees, more slop, more ruts and now some roots to really make things exciting. It didn’t take long for these ruts to become real wheel snatchers and the tapes were soon moved by the organisers to give a few more line options.

This section became a real head scratcher throughout Saturday and many were seen pushing back up in an attempt to get it right before seeding, seeding which was later cancelled but never mind, more of that shortly. It was difficult to get a clean run through here and you spent a fair amount of time each run feeling your shoes being tugged at by the thick gloop as you made yet another dab. And then you were back onto the hardpack of the old course for a short time before being shot back into a dark and dingy wooded section, crossed by thin white slivers of slippery roots lying in wait to snatch your wheel from under you. Into another soft and boggy section, get through that with as much speed as possible and you’re through the worst of the slog.

Hit the rock garden and pop across the stream gap with a lack of grace, into the two berms, grab a tear-off so you can see and hit the (small) double before the stump field. Take the right hand stump jump at the end? You should have. Most struggled to make the next double, let alone the triple. You’re virtually at the road crossing now with only a few minor changes to the usual lines. Unfortunately, one of those lines included opening up the rock garden the other side of the road crossing which meant that the ‘big line’ was no longer the best option. A shame although I wouldn’t have fancied my chances jumping into that with a set of mud caked spikes! Rail the next turn and fire into an old piece of single track which has been raced for many years. Nicely ridden in, this was fast despite the mud and led you into the same off camber section as was used last year. A section which caused plenty of difficulty last year with its treacherous mix of roots, ruts and steep camber and it seemed no easier this year although a nice rut did come out by the time racing started at 2pm on Sunday. A few last steep corners, the step down, rail the huge berms, through the gate and drop down the elevator into the field to break the beams. Sub 3 minutes was hot whilst sub 2:40 was exceptional.

So with a wet track, waterproofs were donned, spikes were fitted and old tubes were cut up to create make shift mud guards. Those with £14 to burn splashed out on the RRP Neoguards, how many were sold this weekend? With plenty of time to practice on Saturday, not many people were in a rush to get on the first lift. However, those who did were treated to nearly an hour’s wait on a coach half way up the hill whilst a key was found to open a forestry gate near the top of the hill. Not the best start to the weekend but these things happen. After a vote was taken from the riders involved on the bus it was deemed that seeding should be cancelled and practice extended until 5pm. So with the gate open and practice running smoothly there were some riders who managed nearly ten runs whilst others took things at a steadier pace, sectioning the lines that were causing them problems retired early to get cleaned up. And clean they were thanks to Jon Smith from Fenwick’s “The Bike Cleaner“, he may well own the company yet he wasn’t afraid to personally man the jet washes. He worked tirelessly from 09:00 to 20:00 keeping our rides sparking as well as lubed up with his Fenwick’s cleaner and lube, all for free!

The seeding run may be a necessity of the BC and UCI regulations but not having it in place sure leads to a more relaxing Saturday and a lot more riding to be had! Throughout Saturday there were some nice lines becoming apparent and by Sunday morning, after a night free from any real amounts of rain, the lines were drying fast on the lower reaches of the hill. Some riders even decided to run the gamble of switching away from the full blown spikes for their race runs. Did this gamble pay off? It depends who you ask. Some got thrown off line in the still wet sections and lost chunks of time whilst others thought the speed and stability offered by the likes of cut spikes or fresh High Rollers on the drier sections more than made up for any deficit in the gloop. Like I say, a bit of a gamble.

Ae Up, no Ae Down.. 30ft down to be exact and steeper than a night in the Wynn Presedential Suite on the Vegas Strip!

Racing started slightly later on in the day than last year, in doing so allowing more valuable time on the bike for your money. But with only one race run and having no seeding with which to gauge your pace, there was no room for error and many riders made mistakes which dropped them down the results sheet, especially given how close the times were at the thick end of the sheet.

Descent-Gear.com's Peter Williams, many thanks to his Dad in his new appointment as BC Commissaire this weekend.

Seems not everyone read Si’s controversial article on Pinkbike regards his “Death” due to his helmet not being done up. No need to name and shame, everyone knew who they were at the race within 2minutes, bad news spreads like wildfire. Shame really as many of them were real podium chances. Good news is they are alive to ride another day..

Props must go to SPS for putting the top 5 riders onto the podiums as it gives a great incentive to riders and adds some more atmosphere at the end when handing out the gleaming new trophies and superb trophies they were, made by Hope Technology and looking ultra trick with their anodized bases and laser etched steel plates.
The sound systems was off the “richta scale” and this meant you could hear from the start line not only the times but also the banging tunes provided by Jase Brennan of Rave Racing.

The IronHorse Bikes hot seat was set up inside a very conveniently parked Monster Energy Monster Truck! That meant those who came down with the fastest time sat in the thrown whilst sipping a can of Sam Hills finest. Finger nails were bitten as they looked up the track to see if the next rider down would displace them.

As ever, racing was started by the Juveniles. Mathew Lean was the third place man with 3:45, whilst in second was Billy Mathews riding for JE James Cycles with a 3:10. But winner of the day and with an impressive time given the physical nature of the course was the physically strong Fraser McGlone with an impressive 3:01.

Moving through the categories now and onto Youth. The top times here were all pretty close but the exceptional rides came from the top three, all of whom were under three minutes. In third was Brad Mather with 2:59. Second was Jamie Maller of Knox onboard his GT I-Drive with a shade under 2.55. However, it was Sam Flockhart of Astrix Europe/Descent-Gear.com onboard his brand new Astrix Proto-Type who pulled the win with a 2:51. His training with Chris Ball over the winter has certainly been paying dividends and his strength and size was obviously an advantage on this hill.

Juniors and Cannondales Sam Dale and Santa Cruzs Josh Bryceland were away on media training and learning how to be interviewed! Not that it mattered as we still had the top Junior times which were all stunning, all under 2:45. In third was Harry Heath with a 2:44. Danny Hart with his new sponsors on board of La Pierre & Saab Solomon as well as Go Fast put in a time nearly good enough for the win. Nearly. In first place and only three tenths ahead of him was Joe Smith onboard his brand new white Tomac and dressed to kill in white with a 2:41.1.

Veterans (The coffin dodgers) Keith Wilson of MSC Bikes/Descent-Gear.com just scraped into third with a 3:11, not bad for the 80’s BMX legend who the week before was back winning BMX races down in Andover. John Cobb must be senile and suffering from Alszimers or something. Seemed his memory lapsed when he hit the final Ae Forest Elevator, a super steep 70degree shoot that’s 30ft high that shoots you into the finish arena. He launched off the top landing almost at the bottom! For his troubles he received the bonus prize of that Bell Drop lid you saw featured here on Pinkbike last week. In the John was second with 3:02 and in first in for Off Beat Bikes was Fort William local Alastair MacLennan with a 2:53, a winning margin somewhat greater than in Junior.

photo

The top 10 in Senior were all sub 3 minutes. Mark Milward the ex British Moto-X Champion is now focusing on downhill and is the dark horse of the pack and this weekend he was third for Swinnerton Cycles whilst it was Mark Weightman who pulled out a 2:51 onboard his new V10 for Leisure Lakes to grab second. It seems only yesterday he was storming his Brooklyn over at the Euro champs to take the Gold Medal! Mark, whilst being on the same second as the winner was pipped to the post with the narrowest winning margin of the day by Russ Harland. A margin of two tenths isn’t much and is indicative of the quality of racers now hiding out in the Masters.

So to simplify things we’ll simply split the women into Elite and Non-elite. So to the non-elite first and it was Kerry Wrigglesworth who took third for MTB Bitz with 5:02. In second was Wendy Chambers for MSC Bikes / Descent-Gear.com with a 4:13. Taking the win for Solid/Electric/CwmDown and South Wales was Monet Adams with a 3:36. Still effectively riding in the Youth category, that was a superb time to be putting in!

We’ll interlude the women’s results with some more of the men. In third was another Solid/Electric rider in the shape of Micky Boswell with a 2:48. Richard Challinor took second with 2:47 whilst the top spot was taken by MSC Bikes/Descent-Gear.com rider Ross Anderson with a 2:45.

Expert men is a fiercely competitive category. Make a mistake and you will suffer for it. Fifth was Alex Bond with a 2:44 with the widest bars on the track onboard his IronHorse Sunday. Fourth place and riding his first Expert National was Scottish lad Pete Williams, riding for Descent-Gear.com and pulling into place with a 2:43. Also on a ’43 were Mike Strickland in third and Ben Morgan of Pearce Cycles in second. However, taking the win was regular Dirt Magazine contributor and Charge Bikes rider Richard Cunningham. Does he still eat tea bags? Surprised with his win? He didn’t even think he would make the top ten!

Ok, the Elite women now and it was the Halfords BikeHut sponsored rider of Helen Gaskell who took third with a 3:09 onboard her super trick and custom made Carrera/Intense M6 with Easton tubing is seriously light. Tracey Moseley was just under the three minute mark with her Kona but setting the field alight with a winning margin of fourteen seconds and a time of that even left Si Paton on the microphone lost for words 2:44 was Rachel Atherton for Animal/Commencal. Repeat 2.44 was even faster than the senior men. Jonnier watch out, Atherton is on the charge..

photo

Animal Commencals Rachel Atherton.

And finally the Elite men. Neil Donoghue was the man in fifth place for Bike Radar (formerly MBUK Magazine) and riding out of their new factory looking pits with a 2:33. In fourth for new sponsors Orange was Tom Braithwaite after a solid run to a 2:31. After an injury plagued 2007, this is a return to form and hopefully an indication of things to come. In third and also for Bike Radar is Marc Beaumont with a 2.27. After a storming women’s win by sister Rachel it was an Atherton whitewash of the men’s with Gee just pipping Dan who stayed on this year. Last year he binned it up top and show boated to the crowd with a massive one hander down the elevator. Hands firmly on the bars this time around the egg timer flipped up 2:26. Only one to go and Gee stormed in and again Paton was left speechless, everyone new it was the win and 2.23 is as fast as you can get.

So despite the uplift error on Saturday morning, things in general went very smoothly this weekend with a good vibe filtering through the pits, especially once the sun popped in an appearance on Sunday, how many got sunburnt? With the gorgeous Monster Energy girls on hand at the finish line handing out drinks with a smile from their new 08 plate £65k Chevy Pickups as riders passed, they added a bit of sparkle to a Dumfriesshire field!

It’s never easy to run a race in the U.K and this weekend was even harder with a petrol strike in Scotland which meant panic buying of petrol and some petrol stations already run dry by Friday. Thanks to those of you who did turn up and cheer on the riders and made it a great weekend!

The next three rounds are UCI E2 status and round two is already full and there are 30 places left for round three at Fort William. Parking and spectating is always free so get yourself over for a weekend you won’t forget!
