Nick Geddes Race for Life

Rain, clouds and a generally grey atmosphere couldn't keep people away from the BMX track in Squamish yesterday. Racers, riders, spectators and friends came out to show their support for Nick Geddes and participate in the ABA Race for Life.

Nick who is a promising young downhill racer from Whistler, B.C. was recently diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The diagnosis came after Geddes had crashed in the Dual Slalom at the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California and was getting checked out for a concussion.

BMX, cruisers and mountain bikes were on the track, the only stipulation was that you had to have a helmet, long sleeve shirt, and a pair of pants to participate. Everyone from the two foot tall groms to the old men's class didn't let the rain stop them as they laid into the pedals and powered themselves around the recently rebuild track. The Squamish BMX Club had tarped the track on Saturday night, but it was still a wee bit wet and muddy for the riders.

After the mud had settled and all of the classes had been run it was time for the draw prizes which had been donated by several of the local bike shops. Up for grabs was a sweet telescopic seatpost, a couple of helmets and a pimp BMX rig. All of the proceeds that were raised from the race, draw prizes and donations will be given to the BC Children's Hospital to go towards cancer research.

It was great to see everyone come out and support a great cause as well as a strong young man. Everyone was wishing Nick all the best and hopefully he will be back on his bike shredding and dominating the gravity race scene in Canada again soon.

That's very inspiring that (like atenciole said) the biking community will support one another in very hard times. Nice to see this.
