Not Another Cali Trip: Part I - Black Rock

Mar 22, 2012
by Nic Genovese

Yes, you read it right. We are doing the "cliche" California road trip. Leave the cold Canadian winter, drive down the I-5 to Aptos, ride the post office jumps, and eat burritos. Knowing that, Mitch Chubey, Anthony Messere, Paul Genovese, Mike Zinger and myself went into this road trip with the mindset of trying to add our own unique style and try to show the trip through our eyes. Our first stop was Falls City, OR, the home of the Blackrock mountain bike trails. I have heard a lot of amazing things about Blackrock over the years, and everyone that has ridden there says it's a MUST.

Signs for Blackrock Bike Trails
Thanks to the Black Rock Mountain Bike Association, we had no issues finding the trails. They have detailed instructions on their website, as well as other very helpful information such as trail conditions and where to stay. If you're ever thinking of checking out Black Rock, check out their website first.

Anthony Messere Being Cold
The weather wasn't optimal, but we worked with what we had. Anthony was having some major "throttle grip" issues and definitely didn't bring appropriate clothing to ride in the pouring rain. He ended up skipping out on this shoot and chilled in the van all afternoon.

We all were super pumped when we found the drop that Cam McCaul shot in NWD 9. We mainly shot video, but Zinger snagged this one of Paul styling it out.

Trail Building
It's amazing how many man hours go into the building of these trails. Huge man made jumps and berms and everything was manicured smoother than a baby's bum. I hope the marking on the trees means that they are preserving them and not marked for removal.

Mitch was earning it all day. Repeatedly hiking up the trails to get the shot regardless of the weather. And trust me, it was not pleasant.

Rainy forests make for the ideal weather for shooting. Mike and I definitely pushed Paul and Mitch all afternoon, but the end result was definitely worth it. Stay tuned for more photos from the journey as well as a video recapping the entire trip!

With lock-on technology being not such a new thing why anyone would run those non lock-on sensus grips is beyond me. Yeah I know he gets them free and maybe a little paycheck from them but to me paying for some $30 lock-ons is a better deal than sitting in the van on a road trip.....

Kinda with you on this one as far as sorting the bike out. Realize it happens, but it's a road trip and Black Rock should never be missed - so amazing!

The reason I buy Sensus grips is because they are cheap, comfy, and they feel thinner than other grips (most people don't like that but I do). It's just personal preference that's all

I really like thin grips. Mainly because of my woman sized hands. Lock-on grips cant get as thin as slip on grips.

 Hmmmm, lets see:
Normal grips:
+cheap
+light
+comfier at the same thickness
+you dont hit your hands on clamps doing barspins and such
The only "downsides" would be:
-slightly harder to install (you will probably only have to put them on once, since most brakes/mechs have completely removable clamp parts)
-they dont grip your bars with such force (however, they grip with enough force and usually wont turn on your bars, and its possible to overtighten your bars with lock-ons)

Conclusion: Besides looking "cool" and "pro", there is really no obvious reason to buy lock-ons.

@damjandamjan but if you are like me, someone who doesn't have brakes that can be removed without removing the grips then lock ons are a great choice, also they can be cheap too (get superstars) and who really cares about grip weight seriously.

and then, like you said, they are easier to install/remove and not gonna turn on your bars.

Conclusion: does this mean i'm 'cool' and 'pro'? Smile

and as for the superstar thing, they now do some uber thin lock ons too, thinner than most slide on grips i've ever run Smile
  • 2 4
non lock on means they can be made of a softer rubber whilst still being nice and thin. I run non lock on sensus grips over ODI grips. Try a pair and you'll see why

It's all about the ODI Troy Lee lock-ons!
  • 2 1
yeah but not everybody has 20-30 quid to spend on grips, or at least isn't willing to xD plus the superstar ones are basically thinner, extra width ruffians, for less than half the price xD

I was so pumped on my odi tld grips even though id heard they weren't prime for gloveless riders. Turns out my hands are fine and the grips are already wearing out after some minor spring riding

£7.99 Lock grips from superstar. Done!

I run Sensus Swayze's on all my bikes. I just like them. I don't care that they aren't lock on. I've ridden in the mud with them a few times and never has issues. Cam Zink, Semenuk, Messere, and a lot of other people run them. I don't think that these top name pros would ride them just to look cool. There has got to be a reason behind it, like maybe the size, comfort, feel, and flange.... but ya know, maybe Cam Zink made them just to look cool and not have any riding benifits, because when you're 360ing a 50 footer you don't need to have good grips. Rant off.

Its also fun when you fall into a small pond on Ladies Only on Fromme and your grips are loosy goosy for the rest of the ride. NOT COOL! Lock ons are important.
  • 1 1
Oh please, people. Lock ons have been super hyped for the last couple of years, and pretty much everyone is running them in the FR/DH scene. How come all the street bmxers use normal grips and i dont know anyone that had problems with them? Seriously, people that do 360s over like 20 stairs use normal grips. This is a department where people seem to forget that simpler is better.

@Alex: Of course the weight is important, if a company made 500g lock ons, would you buy them? Guess not...

 So jealous of Zinger's moustache.

Home turf!!! We work like crazy out there! Hope you guys come back when the weather is better and the trails are super fast! The only good part about the rain is the ability to build more!

Thanks for all of the work you guys put into the trails. One visit to black rock got me hooked on freeride and downhill. Changed my life and made me a much happier person Smile I'ma try to make it out to some build days this year!

You're welcome... It's been a LONG process to get BR to where it is today. It's a bitter sweet thing. I'm stoked to see people recognize that OR has some of the best trails and riding on the planet but it can sure get crowed with people at certain times. Ah well, there's a price to pay for everything. How did you guys come through Oregon and ONLY hit Black Rock though??? Next trip take the time to explore what might just be the US's best Mt. Biking state: OREGON (and Washington too, just watch out for their awfull drivers)

what a little sally!! Messere just lost so much respect.
  • 3 1
Of course no respect for being ballsier or better than you.
  • 3 1
Messere is a pro. His center of gravity would be all askew due to shrinkage of his oversized nads with the cold weather and all...

They don't call it the pacific north WET for nothing!!! My girlfriend has ridden the shore with me in full on downpour, while CBC was a river. She was cold and wet too, but not in the car!!! Good on ya Mitch- way to step up and lead the sesh!!

i just got on sensus grips for my dj and they are siiiiiick! i like em b/c they're really wide and super comfy. i prefer lock-on's on my trail bikes but over all they need to be wide. specialized fuse grips are nice. they get nice and sticky when they're worn inand i think they are 135mm or 140mm
ODI makes the best though adn lizard skin is a close second

I like seeing mountain bikers talk about how shitty the weather was and how cold they were. then in the pictures you see them wearing fuckin jeans, Well no shit you're gunna be cold if you wear things that get waterlogged like none other.

ET is my favorite jump hands down. Haul ass, leave the lip, style it out, land, and then full bore into the berm and back uphill to do it all over again. Soooo ready for spring/summer season!

Love blackrock. That place is rad and getting better all the time. I just hate it there in the mud. No fun. I will deal with the mosquitos there over the mud.
