by Matt Wragg
We are shocked and saddened to hear that Orange Bike's Michael Bonney was involved in a serious crash on his road bike yesterday. Here's the official statement from their Facebook page. There's not much else to say other than that our thoughts are with him, his family and his friend right now...

bigquotesOn Sunday, Michael Bonney, the lynchpin in all that is Orange, had a terrible accident whilst road cycling during the Eden Valley Epic. No vehicles were involved. He was airlifted to Newcastle hospital where he remains in a very critical condition. As most of you will be aware, Michael is an extremely popular person with huge amount of friends, and its impossible to pass on this news individually. Linzi has already been inundated with best wishes and its impossible for her to reply individually, so as he is a big advocate to social media, and after speaking with Linzi, we will keep you up-to-date through our Facebook page.

Ive always said road biking is the most dangerous type of cycling around. Theres been more mtb riders getting killed or seriously injured on the road than on the mountains by a massive margin. Hope he heals up quickly and gets back to producing some of the sweetest bikes around!

generally its cuz people in cars dont give a f*ck
  • 18 8
not because of that, apparently - it says "no vehicles were involved"

its because the speeds on road bikes are WAY higher than on MTBs, plus tarmac is a lot harder than a nice comfy bush. Healin vibes buddy!!!

I agree car drivers don't give a shit, and also agree that tarmac is not soft- but apparently he suffered a heart attack. Swift recovery Mike.

ye more people surprisingly get injured while road biking... good luck Michael

I live in the ghetto and commute to school on my road bike. I'm more scared of getting hit by a car than I am of being shot, robbed or mugged in the hood. I have had a close call with a person opening his car door and nicking my handlebar. It ripped the bar-tape off, but I didn't crash and thank God that I didn't get run over by the cars that were passing me by. I guess the most dangerous part of my daily life is when I'm on my road bike. Heal up Michael.

Road biking is seriously dangerous with or without cars. If you hit a slight bit of rubble or crack, you can easily go down. You are insanely lucky if you crash and walk away without a broken collarbone, femur, hip, etc... screw road biking, it's way to scary. Hoping all the best for a full recovery.

To me the biggest reason for road accidents, is over confidence. My friend is an ex DH champ here in P.R, who moved to racing Critoriums on fixed gear bike, and broke his face when he fell whiile riding his bike at high speed with no brake or helmet. No car was involved. I fell my self doing 32mph on road riding on my 29er, didn't brake my face since i was wearing helmet, the worst crash i've ever had, and the only reason why I fell was over confidence, no cars involved either. Also have to point the fact that people ride with no taillights, headlight, on the wrong side of the road, running red lights, no reflectors, riding on roads you are not supposed to ride, riding next to eachother instead of a single file lane, overspeeding in areas where there's a lot of traffinc/pedestrians etc. and the list goes on. A lot of times is the car's fault, but a whole bunch of times is the cyclist fault too...

Wish I could give 100 props to that comment bro. ^^

The lack of safety gear is a major issue as well. The speeds that road cyclists often achieve far exceed the certifications for even the best cycling helmets. Combine that with simple lycra clothes and no other real protection for joints or vital organs, a roadie is only one high speed slip-up from serious injury. Stay strong Michael and heal up fast.

And it also says that 'no vehicles were involved'
  • 5 1
We know no vehicles were involved. What is being said above is that there is a combo between rider error (riding wrong side of road, no reflectors or lights, no helmet, etc.) and driver error (not seeing the cyclist, or not giving a shit). I live in NYC during the school year and i can tell you truthfully that the cab drivers here do not give a f*ck about anything but getting the passenger to the destination as quick as possible.

Hope this guy makes a full recovery none the less.

You got it bro! Bang on

Don't kid yourselves. On a per hour basis, DH riding is still the most injurious. Like 20x that of xc...Not sure about death. I think it takes a deliberate effort to die while dh'n.. but you can get killed road riding even when doing so conservatively which is why the older i get and the more fatalities i hear about the less road miles i ride. I'd rather deal with a broken collar bone than end up dying doing what i love(which is such a poor phrase as nobody loves crashing or getting hit by some lout with a lead foot)

i rode to school today on my roadie (12mi) and got cut off way too many times. almost got a mirror to the shoulder too.

Yh the amount of times I see a dude wearing full black, no helmet, no light, no reflectors and late in the day (sometimes night) and I just think "Good luck mate"

Good luck to him and his family, I wish them all the best.

Reading this I remembered some memories from last summer. We have a paved road on the steepest hill around here. I hit over 70km/h on my roadbike wearing lycra and a roadbike helmet and I felt I was going slow. Back when I raced downhill skateboard I used to hit similar speeds on that same hill... wearing full leathers, slide gloves and a full face. Regardless of the increased protection, I found dh skateboarding was much safer in general than road biking. I felt retarded going so fast on my roadbike and I thought at the time that if I crashed I couldn't be sorry for myself as I was asking for it, big time...

I wish him a speedy recovery. It is true that more road bikers are injured than mountain bikers, but that does not mean that it's more dangerous than mountain biking. There are simply more riders on the road than on the mountain.
  • 2 0
well i once got hit by a cyclist in my car
  • 1 0
On some occasions tho you do get the odd roadie that likes to ride 6ft from the kerb and then there's the side by side riders. Playing chicken really. I'd rather have a conversation on the quieter lanes personally.

 Stay strong Michael, good luck.

Michael I know for a fact that you love riding, and in search of that smile that comes from the freedom of wheels beneath us it's the unfortunate truth that sometimes accidents happen. Many of us have become prisoners to damaged bodies at some point, some worse than others. I can never thank you enough for standing next to me in my time of imprisonment and giving me the opportunity and support I needed to overcome it. We are all wishing for you to come back strong from this one, to smile and ride again.

Terrible news. Best wishes and all the strength for a speedy recovery Michael.

I really hope he makes a full recovery, it's shocking news. Also people need to have a little more respect when criticising road biking for been unsafe. All sports have their risks and people do sports like road biking and mountain biking out of love and passion as with all sports. So please respect that and wish Michael a speedy recovery and give his family the best of wishes.

Get well soon Micheal. I own a Subzero and an Alpine 160 and I'm a huge fan of Orange. My subzero seat stay cracked from using a gravity dropper, but I welded it back together, powder coated the frame and it was as good as new! You do the same thing buddy, heal up and get back out there!
