Video: Orbea - What is Enduro For You?

Jul 31, 2013
by Tyler Maine

The Orbea Enduro Crew was shredding trails between EWS #3 and the Megavalanche in Meribel in order to present you what Enduro is for the team.

But we would like to know, what is Enduro for you?

It's all mountain. This is nothing new. Enduro is race format (not a style of riding) and apparently a marketing buzz word.

I like to compare it to track...xc is the Mile and up, dh is the 100 meter dash, and enduro is kindove like the 400

Wasn't "all mountain" a buzz word to what we all called mountain biking?

100% agree with "Enduro is a race format", and nothing more.
  • 2 0
yea man, they used to ride the same mountain before and called it all mountain, riding the same again calling it enduro!! tho' it sounds more aggressive enduro.

So over hearing about people going for enduro rides on enduro trails on their enduro bikes.
  • 3 0
enduro is blasting like a freight train whatever the track with always the same bike.

Enduro is style of life whether it's racing or every day riding. ...Where you pushing your self to limits of fitness and skills on mid-travel bike. This is for me Endurance = To Be stronger, faster, smarter rider at long day spins!!! Go out and ride what ever you call it is freedom-cheers!

Well said, agreed with the rest "Enduro" might be being used as a marketing ploy. However the point you made and the point of this video is spot on. Downhill Racing is a format correct? People still refer to not climbing to the location and flying over a descent..DH. So Enduro really does become a life style then.

Enduro is what turned my 29lb bike into a 32lb bike.

And here was me thinking they just made road bikes, cracking vid orbea - i'm enjoying all this new enduro malarcky immensely!

See, I still dont get that with Enduro racing, they only time the DH part, so really, it doesnt matter how crap you are at riding uphill, because you've only got to get down fast. So its more like doing 3 or 4 DH runs on different tracks, but in one day, and you cant use the chairlift? Is it just me that thought (afew months ago when this 'enduro' word became widely used) that it was abit of a strange set up just timing the DH? Or should I keep my opinions to myself in future? haha.

Don't keep them to yourself. Of course we'll receive a bit of hate but I'm right with you. I grew up riding all-mountain and currently ride dh and am all the time but I really think the entire enduro format is really overhyped and a bit awful. I could go into details but in summation I'm really not a fan of smashing trail bikes down mellow dh trails against a clock because fun and style usually go by the wayside. Go watch Buehler's new edit if you want to know my opinion on how lighter travel bikes should be ridden(minus the jump section)

This is my biggest issue with the US enduros I have ridden. You can take all day riding up the hill if you want to. Hell I saw guys walking DH bikes up, thats just not what the enduro format is about. I understand its still early but it needs to differentiate itself from the other formats of xc and dh. It needs its own flavor. I think modeling itself after auto rally is really going to be the best and most enjoyable format, time limited uphills/rides between stages.

Agreed, the Enduro label is a race format and marketing tool. I did enter one race and found it to be akin paying money to go for a ride with buddies. It was not at a ski area and we rode the connectors to each timed stage. I guess it did let us know exactly who was faster at the timed sections, but I think we probably already knew that.

I've been to some xc races and found them to be highly focused on RACING!!!!! The vibe at the Enduro was about as chill as riding with friends.

As @Daddybear suggests below, I am pretty sure that Enduro is what we call mountain biking. I kind of feel the 'all' in mountain biking is another marketing tool, and it represents what very many of us simply call going for a ride.

Question: why don't they time the climbs?

Answer: climbs always take much longer than descents. Due to that, any race that includes long climbs will be won by the person with the most climbing ability almost to the exclusion of descending ability. Also, it will favor climbing-centric bikes. Enduro is intended to be a format that favors a mix of skills and equipment. Therefore, it cannot be exactly like XC or DH. Yes, this does often result in a less competitive vibe, and many people enjoy that.

Solution to this is time limited climbs. Set a limit, ie you have 1 hour to make it to the start gate if you don't you suffer a penalty. Its easy enough to figure out what that time should be and it has no direct impact on your overall times, it will only affect our time if your not able to ride up hills. Doesn't have to be XC speed or anywhere near it but the all day walk to the top needs to go.

Solution: Save the entry fee, go ride with your mates, and decide afterwards over beer who was the fastest for any portion of the ride you care to recap...

Trollolo? I thought those vids from EWS are good enough proof that timing uphill stages is unnecessary, those "downhill" stages are beating the last shit out of all competitors... I can't see a way of not being totaly battered on monday morning after an "Enduro" weekend, even If I tried to take it easy and just hang out, but I see no problem of being smiling, fresh and clean after a DH comp...

Mt48, that is exactly what they do, you have to ride to the start of the stage for a specific time or face a penalty.

Not in US enduros I have raced in. I think its more common in europe but it still has yet to catch on here in the states.
  • 1 0
Yeah, I think its probably the best solution and I thought most places did it.
  • 10 1
 enduro is....(drumset) allmountain biking
  • 11 3
So enduro is... Riding DH slowly in bikeparks. hahaha!
  • 6 0
So enduro would only be a new way of park riding? Come on... It's everything but that.

This video is the greatest load of sh1te iv'e seen in a while. Nothing is to the point, enduro is not in a skate park, enduro is not rolling 5 deep down a grassy hill and funking about on a picnic bench. Enduro is 1 step down from downhill, thus the bikes have 160mm adjustable suspension. That video was crap. Not in any way informative or concise.
  • 2 0
no, enduro is definitely in a skatepark. didn't you see the video?
  • 7 0
 Sorry, but that was lame

Orbea, a hint, you had orbea enduro bikes in the EWS last weekend in Winter Park, film that! Race footage is so much more fun than your typical berm shot.
  • 2 1
Enduro (as a racing format) needs to add more tech sections from what I am seeing, and not just fast technical sections but slower technical sections as well. An example would be a tamed down version of Akriggs a hill is Spain where riders would have to hop up onto, off of, and onto other obstacles to put a manageable and fast line down. I think having this will add a level competition and allow riders to be more differentiated in their styles and times through different timed sections.

Combination of trials and racing? Sounds rubbish.

Judging by this video, enduro to Orbea is the same as the other brands and verging on cliched featuring generic footage where you could just as easily change the bikes for any others on the market.

If you compare this to the footage from the EWS and in particular consider the diary updates by Jared Graves, the discipline of Enduro is so much more. Ups, downs, line choice, compromises between weight Vs longevity Vs optimal performance, mechanical issues, the unforeseen, true support from your fellow competitors and an astonishing level of strength, power, conditioning, endurance, physical and mental ability. And I'm sure there is a lot more that I've missed.

An great enduro video to me would POV with a constant stream of what the rider is thinking (sprint, brake, sweeping left hander in 150m followed by step down to right hand hip, pedal hard, easy downhill, conserve energy for climb, gear change before fence line to tackle rock garden......etc. Something akin to the feed a co-driver gives in car rallying. Now THAT would give you a real idea as to what an Enduro rider is going through.

Hopefully the next bandwagon attempt will try to create something different and create a real talking point.

"Enduro is a challenge" *image of them pushing up*. Apologies, but i was under the impression they rode up to ride down? Like a hybrid between XC and DH...

"Enduro is everyday mountain biking in matching outfits".

Awesome, one of the best team vids I've seen. People responding literally to their question completely missed the point...
