Picture of the Month is an article showcasing the best Pictures of the Day from the month before. We take the most viewed photos from the previous month, and pick our favorites out of the top 10.

This month's photos seemed to include a few more that don't fit the 1024 pixel big picture format, so unfortunately a couple of good ones have been relegated to the Honorable Mentions. The number one shot this month is a no brainer for me, it's definitely one of my favorite race shots of the year, Ropelato looks like a rocket ship. My second choice is a photo that was picked mostly based just on style alone, and there was a bit of complaining about my number three choice when it was POD, so I'm sure there will be again, but I'm sticking to it. I think it's a great photo and definitely worthy of being here. Number four is a really interesting shot, and five is just a spectacular crash. I don't often pick crash shots as POD, even though they get a lot of views, and I won't normally pick them here. There is usually nothing great about the photography, people just love to watch something tragic, like a train wreck...

....as demonstrated by Mitch Ropelato. Ropelato was absolutely pinned coming over this drop. A few riders pulled up and launched but Ropelato just flat out sent this.

Honorable Mentions include:

"Troy Brosnan during UCI World Cup 2011, La Bresse, France" by Vanja. This is our first runner up with 32,147 views, and if it had been large enough to fit into the big picture format it probably would have slid in around 2nd or 3rd place.

"Jorn is hitting this sick roadgap..." by Sebastian Lehmann with 32,930 views is another great shot that would have made the top 5 had it been a little larger. Keep in mind that our big picture format uses images that are 1024 pixels on the long side, any smaller than that and they won't display properly here.

I think people are hating on number 3 because the shot is almost all about the photographic qualities and not about the rider(s). I know very little about photography so to me it simply looks like a blurry berm shot. I know its called "Photo" of the day but since its on a website like Pinkbike, shouldn't the photo be more about biking and the rider than just photographic qualities? Just a thought...

I like number 3, just can't figure out if there's only two different riders in the shot or more.

If you look closely there are two different riders, one with a white shirt and one with a black shirt. It's a sequence of them ripping through the berm at pretty high speed, it's shot at 1/250 as a sequence, and you need to be going pretty quick to get that much blur at 1/250...

YES IAN YOU SUPERSTAR! Thankyou for putting number 3 in there. I totally agree with you about it being an awesome shot. It was really well captured. but i guess haters are gonna hate. But an all round good top 5!

All dh photos, apart from one.. There should be more variation! bmx, mtb(from dh to street), Trails and even Road riding..
Everything seems to evolve around Dh which isn't right.

The images are picked based on the most viewed POD's from the previous month, there is no thought or input about what genre of biking they are. So the top 10 are chosen by number of views by Pinkbike users, and then I choose from there...

In fact, those images are presented with 'a hypothetical sequence'. Let's assume that is the same rider in all pictures:
n.1 Attacking the trail
n.2 A fast 'manual'
n.3 Nailing the berm
n.4 Slopestyle
n.5 An encounter with a log
Just an assumption.
