Picture of the Month - February 2012

Picture of the Month is an article showcasing the best Pictures of the Day from the month before. We take the most viewed photos from the previous month, and pick our favorites out of the top 10.

This month's most viewed photo has considerably more views than the rest, and it's no surprise. It's an absolutely ripping race shot from Eric Palmer, great action, and a great photo. Another interesting bit of trivia that you'll all probably notice is that both of the riders in the first two photos are named Theo. Or almost, it's Theo and Teo. The third most views this month is an image that probably will move up in the ranks a bit over the next little while as well. It's a great shot by Matteo Ganora that was only POD a couple of days ago, and it already has almost 23,000 views.

  1. Theo Erlangsen by ericpalmer - 40699 views

bigquotesI was shooting a practice day in Paarl & Theo stopped when he saw me. The man is a little ripper, so I was amped to work with him. This corner was super soft & loose & was getting a bit of a bomb hole in it that was throwing his front wheel up as he came out of the corner. I tried a few other angles, but knew what I was going to end up liking the most, so got my fish out, got ready, gave Theo the go ahead. He hit it so pinned & I knew I needed to wait for him to pull out, so I waited a split second longer than normal & at 1st I thought I'd cut a tiny bit of the front wheel off, but when I looked at the back of my camera it was all in! I was so amped I ran down the track screaming to show Theo the shot, not often this kind of thing works out 1st try & I haven't been this stoked on a photo in a while, I'll definitely be working with him a lot in future. - Eric Palmer

My vote's on the first one. There's just something about it. Probably the action.

I wont deny its a good photo, but the rider's got the back brake on whilst trying to manual, he just looks akward.

LOL!!! Really??? NO, Not AWEkward.....AWESOME!! That photo and that manual is flawless in Palmer's shot. The photo rips and the riding rips. He's obviously flat out during either a practice run or a race run. Your're just trying to make this about you in some way.. You just know that Palmer had a split second to capture this image while Theo was blazin through his turn. No one cares that he's trying to roost too.
  • 2 1
is he wearing a roost guard? i guess if hes gonna get that moto on every corner...
  • 1 0
nah not awkward. probably shitting himself cos he's pinned!! i would be. he's pretty flying

Yeah man, I have a 5.10/Giant Hart 2012 Championships Ad of the Glory fav'd in my profile that really showcases the bike. I love it but In all honesty, I think I would enjoy this shot as the ad even more. I'm happy for EP's best shot win!! Obviously the pic is a still shot......But when you first look at it , it looks as though the rider is still moving it's soo clear and lively, right up to the gravel falling from his left foot!

He's grabbing his front brake, not his back brake. Unless he has them switched Moto style. I know it's personal preference, but why is he wearing shin guards and a roost protector? Both of these items might protect from scratches and bruises, but a pedal to the shin, or a rock to the chest isn't going to kill you. I don't see many riders at a pro level wearing this level of protection. I couldn't imagine riding DH in more than knee pads and a full-face only (maybe a Leatt, but I haven't tried one yet).

Last Month was Palmer's month- Every shot he's put on PB has been amazing. That bloke is as inpiring as Sterling Lorence for me and that's about as big a compliment as I could ever give to a Photographer. His shutter finger has the Midas touch.

He does have the levers moto style.

Motorcycles have a clutch on the left, and the front brake on the right. Most mountain bikers run the front brake on the left and the rear brake on the right. Some guys I know who ride moto and mountain bikes will switch their brakes on their mountain bikes to avoid confusion when they are riding moto so they don't squeeze a handful of front brake thinking it's the rear. You are right; It's clear that he's switched his.

I ride both motorcycles and bicycles. On days that you're switching between the two quite frequently it's definitely quite easy to confuse the two levers. But for most of the time it's second nature to switch without even thinking about it.

well guys, when ericpalmers photo made POD a couple of months back, the same argument was held. please, for the sake of my dash, stop.
  • 1 0
I'm not clear on what your refering to but if you mean moto style levers....then Yup. pretty beat argument. I'm not sure, though, that it's really being argued on this thread, though. Just a general observation.

Congratulations Eric! A stunner shot showing the quality and style you rip so consistently. Keep up the amazing work!

For those who don't already know, Eric also posts shots on Flickr, which is where I first came across his work years ago: www.flickr.com/photos/ericpalmer

Congrats to the other photographers as well. That shot by Matteoganora is unreal!

Its hard... #1 is by far wicked sick! Had is my laptop desktop for while now... and #3 is pretty baddass too... lots of detail and depth to it. But I'm still gonna have to go with #1...
  • 4 0
i think when you make this go from 5th to 1st down the page, because as you go down its not as exciting. its better to anticipate the first place shot

the Giant picture BLOW my MIND!!! Sick pic !!!
  • 1 0
 full throttle! vroooooooooommmm...
  • 3 0
you know it's an amazing picture when it was added on the 28th and it still gets enough views to get third in picture of the month.
  • 1 0
 Yessss ... #3 is POM ... amazing shot !!!
  • 1 0
Number 2 would be the best if someone dumped it into the monster's mouth. JK Seriously, the rider in 2 is just a bit too small otherwise it'ld be a toss up between 1 and 2. Number 3 is beautiful also but just not enough action.
  • 1 0
Damn, #1 makes me wanna buy a fullres and print it all over the wall!!! While #3 is a really incredible shot by itself!
And agree about ##4,5 - they look ordinary in this set.
  • 2 0
My vote is still on the Giant pic, although the third one is pretty cool too. That woman waving from the window above: shot at the perfect moment!
  • 2 0
Has to be the first one every time,he,s just fully pinned coming of that bend.exellent shot !
  • 1 0
My vote goes to number 3. The mad eyes and the view up from the street just makes the photo. Gives a different perspective to the whole photo. Nice work!

#1 or #3. the dude's focus in #3 is bending space-time. he's the middle of his own singularity.
  • 1 0
#2 has been my wallpaper on my phone for weeks!
  • 1 0
Number 3 or 5. Gotta love the Ibis but number 5 is the better picture

First one is a stunner, love the angle and aggression
  • 1 0
On number one are his brakes opposite?
  • 2 0
Depends on where you live. Compared to most US riders, yes. Compared to Brits and Aussies, no.
  • 2 0
 1st and 3rd for me.
  • 1 0
Love em all, but going with #1!!!
  • 1 0

  • 1 0
haha . . . anyway Theo is legit pinner!
  • 1 2
sick of seeing that first one. its a cool photo but its boring now
  • 1 0
That's because it's the first thing you see when you pull the page up. That's what happens when your shot wins, it gets to be right in your face. It'll wear off when you stop staring at it.
