Words and Photos by Fraser Britton

Fraser Britton checked out the Pietermaritzburg World Cup DH track with Team Monster Specialized. Take a look at the photos and listen to what Troy Brosnan and Jacy have to say about some of the track features.

First corner right out of the gate drops you into a high speed woods section complete with slippery off camber ruts and loads of tape.

The end of the first long section of track ends with a slightly technical rocky bit, complete with a few corners and 2 small drops.

This is the beginning of the new section of track, called cloud 9. It's a pretty blind run in to what amounts to a cliff. There's a few line options, including that diving board rock on the right.

This is cloud 9 from the bottom, with Troy for scale.

The new off camber woods section follows cloud nine, and goes for some ways. It is incredibly slippery when wet.

The run into the massive table tops and the pedaling section will reach speeds in excess of 70km/h, and riders are still having trouble clearing the second table top. It is massive, and organizers will be cutting it down during the week before Friday practice.

These are not small jumps.

The pedaling section is a long, lonely walk. May as well bring your mechanic with you!

The bomb hole section as riders come off the pedal throws them off a small lip and into a large fadeaway. With enough speed riders can coast up the backside and air this stump and they are off into the final trees.

This is the last hip on the track. Gwin and Bryceland absolutely boosted this thing at the local race last weekend. Riders have the option of going massive to the backside, or shorter to the berm. Going big is definitely the spectacular choice.

You guys are supposed to be on here to comment on the article not thinking up the best way of offending one-another !

I think it's the wind from behind. I don't think he's got that fat. you would see that on the riding pictures, when his jersey is tucked in...
  • 4 4
Well said fedz! Gwins gonna kill it this weekend!

So sammy has had a fun off season! slowly starting to look like the rest off us!

Can we get a rob Warner track preview, where he rides and commentates at the same time PLEASSEEE!
  • 8 1
Anyone else counting on Sam to kill it?
  • 6 0
haha quit tryin to humanize sam hill, he's a winning machine!! your lucky he's not hunting you!!!!
  • 1 1
 nocoolnamesleft's mom is dead tho
  • 2 0
na troy is gonna kill it, and yea get rob to do another run with comentary it will be sick!
  • 1 2
^considering gwin got 10 seconds on troy, with a crash, at the pre-world cup race on the same course; i'd say the odds are definitely against him.
i seriously can't wait!
  • 1 1
In the other photos it doesnt look half as bad as what that 5th last photo makes it. As convincing as it is, it has to be a trick. I do want Hill to smash it though, a bit biased am I!

Holy BALLS. The Cloud 9 section looks SO ANGRY.
Also, why cut the jump down?! Ball up and BOOST!
..And no, I wouldn't jump those doubles to save my life...

Looks SO amazing, can't wait for race day!
  • 6 8
they cut the jump down because the world cup guys carry so much speed they'd outjump the landing if they left them as high as they do for the mear mortals that jump it
  • 12 1
Actually, they cut it down because it was too big to make, period. Gwin cased it, troy cased it etc. Not a single rider managed to clear it, just not enough speed.
  • 1 3
so are they going to destroy it ?
  • 1 0
 just shorten it I guess...
  • 1 1
 hope so !
  • 1 1
as far as I know, this is the true cloud 9 urc.com.my/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/c9-wafret-twins-red-p-300x199.png
but, PMB's is differ, cloud 9 is pretty narley!
Sam seems pretty stoked, my money on him

is there a webside showing this season live??
cheers
  • 1 0
yes!!! Big Grin Big Grin !!

I just hope there's gona be a couple camera crews in the upper single track sections. Last year all the footage was from The Gate, and then from midway down. All the game- changer crashes were never caught on camera. Like Brendawgs crash for example.
  • 10 0
Can't wait for CG hitting that hip-jump!

Looks so smooth and "flowy" Id love to ride there!!!!
  • 8 0
 Looks like an amazing track...
  • 5 1
 Yeah man !
I must admit I used to kinda hate on this track slightly because of the pedally part but the rest of the track makes up for it I think . it looks soooo fast.
40 seconds sprinting when you are being paid to ride your bike is not a big ask Razz
  • 11 0
I think you'll find that 95% of the entries pay to be there rather than being paid to be there. Downhill isn't the golden ticket to a life of booze, beaches & birds...

South Africa looks like an awesome place to ride.
  • 5 0
Looks rougher than Swindon on a Saturday night. Hell of a lot more fun though.

all you guys can do is talk about sams belly... closet queers i say lol no one seemed to say anything about the fact that hes super tatted up. or the fact that that he let troy win the aussie nats only to win the last race which also happens to be the first race before the world cup... my call for south africa is gwin, hill, and mick on the podium this weekend. not necessarily in that order

Camera guy - "any secret weapons for this part?"
Troy - "nah, nothing you need know about...smirk>"

Why that saucy little competitor.

 His smiley=sarcasm.
  • 1 0
Will they still be free on red bull?
  • 1 0
@ alibrann, since as a sport downhill is pretty small, i think they will make it free. i hope they will also broadcast the world champs for free tho!
  • 1 0
It look like redbull going to have coverage at gmt + 2 hours? whatever that means. I guess freecaster is over and extreme.com not showing any coverage. I also see the cross country event is an olympic qualifyer. When is downhill going to make the olympics, what would you rather see pedaling uphill or 50 mph high flying dh? get with it olympic committee.
  • 1 0
 Yeah,it's free of course...I guess ... Smile )
  • 1 0
