Using Pinkbike's Buy and Sell? - Spring Cleaning Central

Apr 5, 2013
by Mike Kazimer
With the snow receding and trails drying out across the Northern Hemisphere, prime bike season is fast approaching, and that means it's time to inspect your ride. Fork blown? Wheels busted? Pedals won't spin? Check out Pinkbike's Buy and Sell section for deals on all the parts and accessories you could ever want. Or, if in the midst of spring cleaning you find yourself with bike parts you no longer need, post them up for thousands of potential buyers from around the world to see.

There are currently nearly 3000 freeride/DH bikes for sale, over 400 dual crown forks, 300 pedals...the list goes on. It doesn't need to be strictly mountain bike related either – there's a road bike section, an electronics section, even a spot to purchase music related items. The best part? It's totally free. So if you haven't already, give the Buy and Sell section a try and get your ride dialed in for spring.

And it's global!
For North American Buy&Sell - https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/?region=3
For South American Buy&Sell - https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/?region=4
For European Buy&Sell - https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/?region=5
For Australia/NZ Buy&Sell - https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/?region=6
(*New) For Asia Buy&Sell - https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/?region=1

Screen shots

You name it, someone's probably selling it. From DH bikes to snowmobiles, 29ers to iPods, there's something for everyone in Pinkbike's Buy and Sell. And for the next person to offer up their PS3 for a bike, you will get banned for life!

I think some sort of rating system would be really help full to see if someone is a legitimate seller, reliable, posts items on time and that the item received is as described not just trying to con you.

this has been discussed countless times, and it would be far too easy to abuse. If you're worried about being scammed then shop locally or use paypal goods. There's no real reason to create a hassle for the majority of users because of a few scammers and people who are foolish enough to fall for their schemes.
  • 9 0
 Fair enough
  • 22 3
nobble, I was scammed on here by a guy who 'sold' me a set of bmx hubs and rims. The price was reasonable but fair so that didnt give any alarm bells, his paypal address was very similar to his pinkbike user name, he had followers on his profile and plenty of pinkbike history. In what way was I 'foolish' to fall for that?
  • 23 0
ive had next to no issues buying/selling mtb parts, got nothing but hastle trying to buy a few bmx parts.
  • 17 1
Same here funnily enough, I bought a full mtb from a chap and ended up sat having a brew chatting for a few hours before leaving with the bike. All BMX guys want is your cash and I find a BMX'er has a very different definition of good condition to a MTB'er

When I sell stuff I usually list me eBay id. This way people can see I'm a genuine seller.

Why not sell on eBay you ask?..........'cos of the bloody extortionate fees. Although even by selling on here and using paypal, eBay are making money (eBay own paypal if you didn't know).

@petehaddock - If you have followed paypal guidelines correctly then open a dispute. 99% of the time paypal see in favour of the buyer.
  • 2 0
I have done, it has helped that someone reported him on here shortly after I bought from him so i can send paypal screenshots of his profile with 'USER SUSPENDED, VERIFIED SCAMMER' written across the top!
  • 12 2
I think there should be a minimum amount of time you must be on pinkbike before you sell.

However, the old guys who or people who just need to shift some old bikes(and these are normally awesome deals as the sellers are mature and just want rid of it) could be a bit of a problem. I got my newest frame off a dude who only used this to sell and he was one of the best people i've bought off. I do a lot of Buy/Sell and theres things you learn for who to buy and not to buy off.
  • 10 0
Buy at your own risk. If you can't do local pick up then it's risky. I went on a road trip to pick up my bike.
  • 1 1
@stevocxt - exactly, I went to sell my enduro bike on ebay last night and noticed that the fee for posting an item is based on the reserve price. 50 quid to post an item is ridiculous.
  • 2 0
It's like Kijiji boys, or any classified ad, you wouldn't buy using paypal from an ad you got in the newspaper? Same thing, meet locally or don't buy at all.
  • 10 0
I bought a complete DH bike from a guy once and it came and everything was fine....but very soon after I put it together the derailleur hanger snapped which caused the derailleur itself to get shredded in my rear wheel...I told the guy who sold me the bike about this and he was nice enough the send me another derailleur that he had, that would easily be worth $80

few tips for new buyers : verifiy when the person joins PB. If it's long enough, there are good chances he/she is serious. Look if the person is active on the forums or thread or if he faves/updates photo and videos. If it's an active user, les chances of being a scammer. Look if he already sold stuff on PB. If yes, look what and since when. Try to start a conversation about biking with the other person "hey buddy, where do you ride home, is there sick trails?". Scammer don't really bike, you'll become suspiscious when you read their shitty answer.

finaly : give him a call? it will cost you 5 $ if you are on the other side of the planet and you'll be safe.

I've bought several bike part and sold a bunch too. Never had any problems.
  • 2 0
Another thing that is normally a good way to see if they're a scammer or if the stuff is stolen: look through pictures, what they post on articles and how many followers and people they follow. If the person's profile is complete with pictures and has sold lots of stuff, then you can guess that it'll be most likely a good seller.

Edit: and look in the scammmer thread, or just a general question thread that people in your region reply to. Ask people, they will help you.
  • 1 4
I have some great stuff to sell at reasonable prices and I'm not looking to scam anybody, check it all out on my profile! Cheers.
  • 17 2
Just don't give imprisoned Nigerian princes money and you'll be fine.
  • 6 0
Them Zimbabwean shipping companies man. You'll never make it out alive.
  • 3 0
Make sure to get a photocopy of their foot for verification.
  • 2 1
@TryThoseMelons - I've thought about this too. Even though I don't sell a lot I try and do a good job about being accurate, fair and as quick as I can. I'd like for these users to be able to leave feedback so other buyers have a bit more peace of mind. I suppose we should just start asking buyers to leave feedback on our walls?
  • 2 0
The problem with making a minimum amount of time before you can sell with your PB account is that some people make PB just to sell, so I guess it might be too difficult to filter out scammers from normal guys.
  • 2 0
Just find the bike you want on pinkbike, drive 5 hours and pick that shit up.
  • 2 0
Sometimes a scammer will use photos from Google Images for their advert so sometimes if a deal is too good to be true have a look on Google and its usually from a different post/advert/link etc.

Then report the buggers..
  • 2 0
For those that have been scammed or are weary of it happening again, just make sure to utilize multiple forms of contact between yourself and the seller. Don't just rely on email messages. Ask for the person's phone number so you can talk to them. Have them send you extra pictures that are different than the ones they posted to make sure they really own the item. And just use common sense. If they try to use the old "I'll send you a check and you pay me the difference" it's a scam. If it even sounds remotely sketchy, back out of it. It's not worth the loss.
  • 1 1
@Burnedtoash. That doesn't sound suspicious at all.
  • 4 0
Biggest adrenaline rush I ever got was trading parts with some punk-ass kid in Montreal through Pink Bike. My teeth grinding, fists clenched, muscles tense for days as I waited for my new parts to make it through the mail for the parts I sent him. Everythin I knew about e-commerce told me I was an imbecile for trading parts via pinkbike. Yet less than a week later, I was refitting a new spider to my cranks, and saving a bundle of cash. Plus, I had the great thrill of a scary scary ride through the pinkbike marketplace. And you think Cedric and Bender and these guys have courage. Try doing what I did without crapping your pants.
  • 1 0
If you use paypal, shipment tracking and confirmation and a little common sense, you should be safe. I recovered my money from some punk scammer because of the things I just mentioned. Paypal is great, cash is sketchy unless meeting in person.

I'd like to see a props button that allows you to rate someone's asking price. People who are consistently asking way too much for their used items would get the message when their item receives more neg props than positive. Then, an option would be available to sort buy/sell items buy their props standings. That would bring the best prices to the top, regardless of when they were posted. How many years can you be trying to sell a 2003 Boxxer Race for $350? Ads like that would be at the bottom forever, and the seller would have to do something about it.
  • 6 2
That's a terrible idea. If someone's price is too high, try to knock 'em down or don't buy from them.
  • 2 1
 We need straight/tapered filtering.
  • 41 1
Firslty - love the service Ive used it loads for buying and selling. But can you update it so that when you look through the photos on someones buy/sell then click back you go back to the search and not trawlling back through the photos youve just looked at.
Cheers pinkibke

I would like to be able to find those who are willing to trade made a bit easier. You can search for "consider" and that works ok but you get a bunch of other crap as well.

I would also like to be able to use a decimal point in the search so I can search for a shock that is 7.5. It is a big pain in my ass.
  • 2 0
"I would also like to be able to use a decimal point in the search so I can search for a shock that is 7.5. It is a big pain in my ass."

This one!!!!
  • 2 0
Would be great if there was a way to only see items that ship globally
  • 18 0
+1 for an enhanced search facility. Things that are useful:
1. Wildcards - good for searching for misspelled/awkward to spell items, e.g. Marz*, because people spell Marzocchi all weird
2. OR Function - to search for several different items, e.g. (Boxxer,Lyrik,Totem)
3. Exclude Function - to remove items from the search, e.g. -Rockshox
4. String - to search for, well, a string, e.g. "Rockshox Lyrik"
Like how eBay used to be, in the good old days Smile

or even supporting quotes: I can't look for a 26" wheelset, for instance, i have to look for a 26 wheelset, which brings up other stuff sometimes. this is especially true of rear shocks, and that's before you get into metric vs imperial measurements.

My advice on any purchase, check the riders profile on Pinkbike and reference their Facebook page, maybe even add them as a friend for big purchases. Plus never give out your home address when selling a bike. Meet in the local public carpark with a friend. Use Paypal or bank transfer. Stay safe and buy in confidence without any commission fees!
  • 4 2
 what Si said.
  • 3 0
Surely its easy enough to meet half way and pay by cash once you've seen the items?
  • 6 0
just NEVER pay by bank transfer, you're practically giving money away! I'll only ever use paypal goods, even if it costs me a few quid more to cover the costs!
  • 17 2
Looking for a trek session or giant glory or likewise. Will swap for a ps3, some games, a bag of haribo and a half eaten cheese cracker.
  • 2 0
i'll give you an xbox and a broken gameboy for all of the above

When some thing is marked sold it should be deleted within 3 days off the buy and sell as it just clogs up the pages because people have marked it sold in stead of deleting it. A ratings would be good as well.
  • 14 3
I strongly disagree with the idea of automatically deleting ads. Sold items should remain visible so buyers can gauge a seller's history.
  • 4 2
There is a MARKED sold feature... apparently though a lot of people fail to even acknowledge items are listed as sold, as I often get inquiries for things for stuff found in my seller history from long ago.
  • 1 1
+1 @jackgolfgti, once it's marked as sold it should be taken off the listings, fed up of going through pages that are filled with sold items, would clear up people that are oblivious to the marked sold feature and make browsing around for parts etc much easier.

Other problem is that folk put stuff up for sale, so you message them and weeks later you've not heard from them!

Idea of my own though is to have the lists date related so that you see the latest parts etc at the top

I have bought and sold hundreds of items through Pinkbike, and my hat is off to this website and to the community that uses it.

Sure there are people out there that try to use Pinkbike to dishonourable ends. But the moderators here seem to be very invested and proactive. I suggest reading the ad and the seller's other posts. Pop the seller a PM and chit chat about biking. If the seller is an actual cyclist, the passion will come through.

eBay might feel a bit more secure. But eBay hammers people with fees. And eBay puts a lot of hoops in place for low volume sellers--21 day holds on money, no detailed history, ect. eBay is moving away from being a used goods auction site and more towards being another Amazon catered to online retailers.

Kijiji and Craigslist can be sketchy. Those sites are wide open. A significant percentage of people I have interacted with on those sites left my spider senses all a-tingle. And not just as a seller, but as a buyer too. Far more chance of inadvertently buying stolen items there too. With Pinkbike, the community patrols itself when someone indicates his/her bike was stolen.

I love buying and selling through Pinkbike.

"And for the next person to offer up their PS3 for a bike, you will get banned for life!" Ahahahahahaha!
  • 7 0
Please improve the search so you can opt to only show results including all, not any, of the words. There's a reason google defaults to this...
  • 8 0
 Love it! Bargain central..

I too have had nothing but good experiences with pinkbike's buysell.
I'd like to see a separate section or filter option for shops. It's a buzzkill to hit 50+ ads in a row from the same retailer.
  • 1 0
 Absolutely agree.
  • 5 2
Buying from Pinkibike is a lot better them most online places for used equipment. 99% of the people here are riders and are more likely to be trusted then another site. Also, you can check out someone's profile and see what kind of riding they do and how likely equipment to be in good shape or beat up.
I just bought a Status frrom a Pinkbike user that has new Marzocchi suspension and I am really happy with the purchase.
  • 2 0
Big user of Buy/Sell on Pinkbike. Find that if you try and communicate with buyers and sellers you always tend find a genuine person who is passionate about bikes.

Can't say the same for the likes of eBay etc where people want to make a quick buck and see it as a faceless transaction where they can get away with second rate goods and service.

Pinkbike Buy/Sell all the way!!!
  • 4 0
Maybe a place to put sizing in for bikes/frames... Or steerer tube size, length. The important stuff that people often forget, I'd love to see this in place on the buy/sell
  • 2 0
 Hi Pinkbike admin.

Is it possible to request a new area to be added? Channel Islands in Great Britain would be nice.

I realise my profile still shows me being in Canada, but I'm not, I'm just avoiding admitting it publicly Frown
  • 2 0
I think in the categories for bikes and frames there should be more options, such as separate all mountain and xc sections, then full sus and hard tail sub sections. Would make scrolling through adds easier/more productive.

When searching for forks that could be done by length of travel rather than single and duel crown, as every body would know 200mm section would just be duel crown, and then searching for single crowns by travel would be much better.

Wheels could be split into categories as well - xc, all mountain, free ride, dh etc etc

I like buying from local people so that I can check things out if they are larger items. So a filter to show things withing different distances would be good, like on eBay.

These things could make the buy sell section even better I think.

Cheers

I have quite a few riding buddies who have bought frames, parts, and even complete bikes off of Pinkbike ... none has had a problem as of yet. Just because someone goes through eBay and uses PayPal doesn't mean that they won't be scammed either. Scammers will find loop-holes no matter what site they are selling through.
  • 1 0
I have made two major frame purchases, two major fork puchases, and one shock purchase. Have sold hubs, pods, derails, and wheels. Never had a problem. I have found most PB users to be very nice to talk and deal with. Thanks Pink Bike.
  • 1 0
could you set up a search function for size for bikes ala xs,s,m,l,xl or in inches. because if you type in the size you often miss ones that list the size some other way. so for large bikes you have to search L, large, 20", 19", 21" and im not interested in 20" wheels
  • 1 0
have had good experience here. buying and even just asking questions to a seller has been great. everyone responds and seem to be honest overall. more of a true rider community vibe. even responses from postings from people have been cool. i dig this site. you people are true passionate riders here..so there's no bs. everybody just says what they think. honest brutality! gotta dig that.
  • 1 0
They need a filter for the tags. I live in Buffalo, NY, not a whole lot of local pick up sales in the area, so I need almost everything shipped here. I get sick of looking past dozens and dozens of local pick up only sales to find the will ship ____ people. If I could filter all these out up front, it would be very helpful. Thanks.
  • 1 0
its all very well saying people are foolish for falling for these scams but the whole point of a scam is to make it look legit so posting all these tips for buyers and sellers only gives them extra ways to scam so its not really as easy as saying the guys that have been scammed are foolish, also just because you pay through paypal doesnt mean its safe unless its bought of ebay with an item description all the scammer has to say is they didnt agree to send you anything for the money you sent, paypal told me this on the phone because i was trying to buy a frame from russia but i thought it was a bit weird so i rang to check and after hearing this didnt end up buying it they dont take any conversation into consideration unless its done after they have taken out a claim ie your pinkbike conversation with the guy who {scammed} you before you made the payment is irrelevant because they say anyone could of wrote it so thats when i lost all faith in paypal it just takes the piss that even the so called secure payment company is still basically trying to scam you by trying to get out of reimbursing you the money you payed them 4% so you were covered!!!! absolute JOKE
  • 1 0
Gaahhh why u encourge my bad habits... i need to be spending less time on buy/sell

Though some sugjestions, perhaps a baseline requrement for what information is posted in a add, ie year of bike, travel, frame size that kind of things, also pics should be require for anything over say $50 i've seen a few adds in the $100's with out pics... i don't even look at them even if want the item... Also, it'd be nice to filter, local pick up vs within country, as someone from VT where we only have a few hundred local adds most of the stuff i look to buy on here has to be shipped... Also a bit more moderation regarding posts in the wrong section, the DH and FR bikes get a lot of wrong stuff since people seem to just drop it in the first option, i know there are a few RC cars for instance...
  • 1 0
and also should it not be up to the pinkbike mods to check if the people on here are legit i dont know but maybe you have to prove who you are to get an account or something i know its a pain for anyone but then at least that way you know anyone on here is legit,or maybe pinkbike should open there own buyer/seller protection and charge 2% maybe cheaper than paypal that way at least they you can buy something without worrying it wont turn up i would buy straight from the bike shops or the net if the bikes weren't stupidly priced dont get me wrong if i could i would but i cant justify spending anywhere from 2000-5000 plus for a bike with a family and bills to pay for
  • 1 0
Bought a complete bike from a guy in Canada with no problems, except for the a** raping import duties and taxes. Bought another one soon after from another guy in Canada and he was cool enough to declare it worth $800 when I paid $3200 for it. When the UPS guy delivered it the box had been opened and UPS wanted me to pay for the brokerage fees in cash on the spot before i could sign for it. Lesson: always use paypal goods and if you buy from Canada make damn sure you get the declared value as low as possible. Yes, this means lying.
  • 1 0
when searching the buy/sell seciton it should have the following search filters.

UnSold ONLY / sold/ / both
Collection only / Willing to post / both
MAKE of BIKE / Part (drop down maybe?) or even just a field to search
Frame size, maybe a field to search in inches or drop down for kids / small / med / large
drop down for Universal / Mens / Womens
Age - ie select 2013/2012/2011/.... then older than 2000

Depending on how popular the item you are searching for is, depends on how many hundreads of pages of crap you need to look through.
  • 1 0
Tips for all buyers! Buy/download a recording device for your phone. Make a phone call to the seller and make sure that you GET CONSENT to record the message. I do this, and if a person declines they were probably trying to rip you off in the first place. IF they give consent ask them these questions: Name, Age, Date of Birth (optional), location (country-city-street-zip code). Read them the International commerce clause for international sale: You do hereby agree that you consent to the sale of ________ to the recipient _________ all information has been supplied and is in subjugate order. Any malfunctions, or deviations from this standard constitutes reimbursement of resale value to wholesale recipient. Failure to deliver the product within a reasonable time frame is considered a direct infraction upon the stated clause. All hearings will be handled in the courts of the recipients residence. Do you agree to the statement presented above? For American to American sales, you are protected by the interstate commerce clause, but you can still read them the International commerce clause, as it is almost identical to the International one. At this point if they agree check the credentials they provided you with their information on pinkbike, and then their information on paypal. This is a sure method to make sure that you do not get scammed. I use it with all of my purchases and it scares off many scammers. Buyers and sellers alike. if you have any questions feel free to PM me on it!

I like the regional lists... 19 in all of south America... that explains why I get people asking if I'll ship to argentina or chile... of course the shipping charges are ridiculous and I rarely ever hear another message back at that point. Oh and 176 ads total for all of Australia/asia. Yeah what the ads really say is how NA/Euro-centric the membership base is.

how about tapered and non tapered fork . dont know how many times i have read a whole ad just to scroll to the bottom and see the wrong size.

Buysell works great i think there should be a slot where you can select what size your bike is that would help to narrow down results

Agreed. Because is very difficult to us living in Brazil or any other country of South America (Argentina in my case) to get valuable goods and some specific items locally and there're few people here that ship worldwide.
I've buy'd at least 5 items (fork, derailleur, cranks, etc) and no problem at all with any of them even on used parts. And I would definitely shop again with them.
