by Ian Hylands
The Baja Bici Aventura November 12-19 is an instructional action packed week with 4 time world champion Brian Lopes and his personal mechanic Joe Binatina. Space is still available if you're interested in going.

Have fun riding & learning tons of tips from Brian, as well as learning all the bike tuning secrets from Joe. Joe has extensive experience building, wrenching on and setting up top pro's bikes as well as running and growing top race teams. Joe and Brian's goal for the week is to provide you with as little or as much instruction, info, and guidance as you wish for. It's all about making your trip at Punta San Carlos an enjoyable experience that will last a lifetime...

I couldn't imagine spending a week with Lopes. Way too much shirtless windbagging for me.
  • 20 6
you obviously don't actually know him...
  • 11 2
Yeah, but that was still a pretty funny comment. I'm sure Lopes is cool to chill with and has lots of great knowledge to pass on to fellow mountainbikers but the shirtless comment isn't too far from accurate.
  • 1 1
 hahaha oh he does 0_0
  • 3 1
Epic. Lopes gets a lot of flack it seems. I've never met him so I can't say anything myself, but that comment definitely made me chuckle. He's just showin off his jersey shore yo
  • 3 1
I think it would be awesome you would learn a lot and you are riding, cant beat that
  • 2 1
 you damn brown nosers!
  • 3 0
I've run into Lopes over the years, and he can be a little intense and maybe arrogant, but a decent guy. I think you'd learn a shitload on this trip.
  • 9 2
I rarely read these chat boards as it always seems like too many people trash talk about random dumb stuff, but since this article was about PSC & my involvement I wanted to see what some of you thought about the trip. For those who have positive stuff to say, thanks for the nice words and your support. As for the others who think they know me, like to talk crap, jump on the band wagon of what others believe, maybe one day when you actually get to know me you'll have a different opinion. If not, so be it as everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Maybe we should all just have some factual information to base our statements on.
  • 9 1
Let me also clarify a few things for everyone who seems to bite on the same old crap. 1. NO SHIRT, if you go to any destination where it is a million degrees outside, what's wrong with trying to be cooler? It will be HOT down in Baja & when we're done riding, relaxing on the beach, yep my shirt will be off. Are some of you embarrassed of your bodies? 2. employee7, you might want to do a fact check before you post stuff publicly. I have NEVER raced or announced the pump track challenge up in Whistler. But you are correct about Mitch, he is the BADDEST DUDE ever on a pump track. 3. nortonwhis, here is where the message gets twisted. I know exactly what you are referring too and this is how YOU interpret it. Because I called the volunteer out for not even paying attention to the riders coming down the course who were clear as day going outside the tape. Why be a volunteer if you are not going to help & pay attention? Why hold an official race, with timing, course markings, prizes, etc. if you are going to allow cheating? Sounds like you were standing in that zone when the rider clearly cut the course and you had no problem saying NOTHING. Maybe you are one of those racers who cheats? And REALLY, I was yelling at a little kid for pedaling on a pump track? Come on bro! If I made a comment to a little kid or anyone for that matter who pedaled on a pump track it was a joke, wise crack, etc. Funny how you could read that as serious, but be OK with not saying anything about a rider cutting a course.

 4. Parking, really guys? This is awsome that some of you love to bring this up. First I'll tell you the real story on this double park in Downieville a few years ago. Weir, Moeschler, my mechanic & myself were all parked in the hotel lot we were staying at, which was jammed with cars. My mechanic shuttled a bunch of us up and we knew someone, most likely not staying at the small hotel, would poach the spot while he drove us up, so that was how we saved his spot. Shame on me I guess for wanting to help out the guy who was shuttling us. I should of not rode and spent some more time on Pinkbike posting nonsense....Nope, i'll take riding any day, which is why you haven't heard me here before. As for the "punching the wife" ongoing cry out, here is the details on that. My wife use to go to kickboxing class a few times a week. She use to come home and mess around with me, play punching and kicking. As she kidded with me, I kidded with her that I could kick her butt, so she said why don't you come down to a class with me. So I went to a class, we put on gloves and head gear and messed around exchanging some kicks and punches. So yes, I really punched my wife. Seriously, hope that clarifies any misconception of peoples thoughts on this.
  • 3 4
how do you explain getting busted double parking all over the place though buddy. obviously if you've been photographed double parking as much as you have means you do it all the time.
whats the deal?
and if you've admitted to punching your wife in the head, then how are you trying to sue the guy writing the article about it?
  • 4 0
Seriously...we're talking about double parking ? Brian I met you in colorado one time. A real pleasure. All the best.
  • 6 0
Anyway, sounds like people have some grudges they need to work out here, but I say man up and do them in person & stop all the shit talking behind your computer screen. Don't be a hypocrite by saying So&So is a a*shole and then be one yourself with comments you post here. Wasted too much time already here, I’m checking out and going for a ride. Hope you all get to do the same….
  • 4 0
you shouldn't feel the need to respond to any of this netspit, Brian. My comment about stigma was a generalization on definition by a total observer so it doesn't mean sh*t nor should you take offense. I'm speaking just for myself here obviously. never met you but have seen you ride since "flyin brian" days at a couple of grands. thought I'd respond to your comment under mine with respect to us both. have a good ride.
  • 2 0
speaking of "grands" ... RIP John Kovachi. everybody I knew spun your wheels at the track. every track.
  • 6 1
I can't imagine this trip being described as anything other than epic! Not to sound like a 'Star Stalker', but to get the chance to rip trails with Lopes, get some riding and wrenching tips, and chill in a place with great grub and drink, damn!...........Boss!
  • 3 1
Nahh that ain't stalkerish at all. Ripping trails with people at that level only pushes you beyond what you thought possible. This sounds like SUCH a sick trip!
  • 4 1
Man, sure is a lot of hating. How come some of you don't just confront a person live if you have such a problem with them or if they do something to another that you dislike so much?
  • 5 2
 this is funnier thats why
  • 5 1
Nice but who's that in the video? Pretty sure it's not Lopes, doesn't look like him at all.
  • 8 1
not me, my moves aren't that good... ha ha
  • 1 1
 hahaha

I was doing a Santa Cruz bike Demo with Brain’s mechanic Joe .Joe was drive us in his Shop van to the start of the downhill runs . We drove past Brain, Joe pulled over to see if he want a ride up the hill too. Brain said sure and jump in with us. Joe and Brain are both very intense people when it comes to riding and racing it’s what they do for a living! After Brain got in the van he was very friendly. He answered the entire list of dumb question we had for him. Even when I ask him to tell us about the new sports Mobile 4x4 off-road camp van he had just got, he told us all about it! I ride allot in Laguna Beach ca, I ride with some pretty fast guys who live around there too. I would like to say I rode with him that day, but after only two turn and he was long gone.. I think it would be very cool to have the chance to ride with him and get a few pointers too!
So sad that I’d have to pay so that he would have to slow down enough for me to ride with him... ;
Rob
  • 2 1
I can imagine that this trip would be incredible. Getting tips from Brian would probably be a pretty unique experience. Apart from all that, it looks like a great place to ride and it sounds like you can do almost anything you feel like doing. Sounds good to me.

EDIT: Shared a lift this summer with Stacy. Pretty sure it was him at least. We talked about motocross, what he's doing, riding, etc. Seemed like a totally reasonable guy to me.
  • 3 0
Great to see some riding here in mexico...looks awesome, planning to go to baja california whenever i can! i just hope i find the trails and jumps!
  • 2 1
Interesting that Cannondale is the big sponsor. Even though he's on one in the vid it's be interesting to see if he's gonna be switching off Ibis in the future. Him and Wier always like to give each other crap. Be interesting to see if they end up on the same team....
  • 2 1
I think a lot of the footage was from a Cannondale camp at PSC, Lopes is still on Ibis.
  • 3 0
Yep, I'm still riding on Ibis. Think you are correct about the footage Ian.

joslatapi , cuando quieras hermano caile para este lado del pais Ensenada Baja , aqui tenemos muchos roles y muy chilos saludos... Everybody that wanth to ride Baja , i live 1 hrs frome the border of san diegoi been to PSC 3 time is a great place to ride lots of trail and the place is magical open contry by the bay you and mother nature , and back home in Ensenada bBaja well like everybody we have great places to ride very epic and a lot of DH tracks .
  • 2 1
what a cool place. coronas are shite beer, though. if you gotta add lime to beer...nuff said. this Lopes stigma always is there following him around. I've never met him but if you get a rep that sticks with you there may be a hint of truth to it. I mean that's usually how it works. anyway, trails and surf?! yes, please.
  • 3 2
wow, i really don't post on here much but there's some truly nasty comments. i think uncalled for. i've known Stacy close to 20 yrs and am happy to call him a friend. he's a fighter for sure. he's fought for everything he has and everything he's done (which is a f*ck of alot). you wouldn't believe what that guy accomplishes in a day without wanting or needing anyones help. i wasn't there but if my bike was falling of a lift i'd be upset, especially considering what it takes to replace it. opinionated, yes, but generally he's correct. he's never failed to give me his opinion, but in all honesty ever since i've known him its always been shit talk and laughs, always.he's a good guy and fun to chill with. i'd guess if you knew him and he knew you you'd get the same impression. that old walk a mile in someones shoes and if you don't have something nice to say things are something we all forget from time to time.all of us. its just playing on bikes and really shouldn't matter this much. go ride. i wish i could
  • 3 3
obviously an incredibly gifted and hard working athlete, but virtually everyone who has met lopes (whose ass he doesn't have a reason to kiss) agrees that he's an epic jerk. likely something to that... can't say i'd be willing to fork out the $ to spend a week finding out
  • 2 0
just do it to learn something then. There are very few as worth learning from in this game about how to ride fast.
  • 2 0
 This looks sooo sick.

also, what the heck kind of rims does that second guy have at 0:14?
  • 2 0
Looks like TAG wheels - could be wrong though. Not my choice for an all-mountain or trial bike - very very tough, but heavy.
  • 1 1
where was lopes shirtless? Must have missed that.

Looks like a great trip, beautiful area.

Good to see guys like Lopes reinventing themselves and passing on their knowledge.
  • 2 0
i'm with u Stacy. dude does it all. the modern day Johnny T

a ride and a swim? with a sunset by the beach? sounds good to me!
  • 2 0
Awesome... but there's plenty more to see in Mexico than just Baja!

haha Stacy. sounds like a lil bromance. joking. watz shakin bro?
grinch
  • 2 0
bromance? are you still on pain killers?
no bromance grinch, just some f ing respect for very skilled human being when it comes to riding offroad. thats it.
get healthy and get riding again!
  • 4 5
wonder how he's gonna park his car with so many people
  • 10 5
soooooooo many people sooooooooo jealous of b.l. 55.
just can't help yourselves can you?
he rides better than you, he lives better than you, he's in better shape than you,he's more open minded than you.
should i continue?
lopes is a world class athelete. deal with it.
  • 5 4
He also has a website dedicated to what an ass he is. Not saying it's true but it is out there. Also heard him announcing the pumptrack challenge a few years ago at crankworx and he was a dick. The only time he stopped talking about himself was when Ropelato smashed his time.
  • 3 3
 jealous much?
  • 4 3
he is a world class athelete, i'm 100% sure he's in better shape then me, lives better and rides better then me, just because they are that doesn't mean they can be full of themselves at the same time
  • 3 2
Lopes can be a cool guy but he can be a world class ass! I've met him quite a few times. Couple times cool couple times complete tool shed. Take it as it is.
  • 5 2
after hearing him explode at a crankworx volunteer about a guy in the amateur men who accidentally cut the course on the qualifying day of the crankworx enduro, i feel justified to say he is a cunt. also he once yelled at a little kid at pump track for pedalling... cunt
  • 5 1
As seen on Craiglist Casual Encounter: Bay Area
"Shirtless and Open minded. Will be in van with picture of Brian Lopes on side parked in two spaces.
BL 5.5"
  • 1 4
 deal with it.
  • 6 1
^^^ same dude screaming at the lift operator when his quad almost fell off the lift. Whaaa Whaaa! take the gondola if such a big deal and keep the lift running!
  • 9 1
Of course you don't have a problem with Brian Stacy since you're such an epic a*shole yourself. I wouldn't donate to Whistler Adaptive till they assured me that not a single red penny would go to the likes of a rude self-serving SOB like you. Back on topic though; Punta San Carlos is beautiful and it'll be a good time no matter what.
  • 8 1
Lee Lau is the f*cking man!!!!
yeah stacy take that bitch!
hey buddy. its pretty f*cking obvious that you're defending brian lopes because you just think being a prick to people is cool.
but dude. you're not just thinking your rad with your shirt off and parking like a weiner. (which is hella funny, so's punching your wife in the head)
you're just out there to tell the whole world to f*ck off cuz you're upset about your goddamn wheelchair.
why don't you just be nice to people?
i hope brian lopes parks illegally on top of your f*cking four wheeler
  • 2 1
Just to be clear, I have nothing against Brian Lopes. I have never met him and am not going to form my opinion about him based on some stories. As far as I know he's a hell of an athlete. My opinion on Stacy is what it is. I do however have a good opinion about the point breaks on Punta San Carlos and am envious of Ian.
  • 3 0
I have met Brian Lopes many times times and I have a pretty good opinion of him. But at the same time Stacy has also always been good to me, so I guess personal opinions are just that. I have an amazing opinion of Punta San Carlos, and I'm stoked to be going. There is a story about my last trip there here.

Lee, you should find a way to join us, then you won't need that envy!
  • 1 3
i have never ever had any association with any disabled program, so go ahead lee, donate away.lord knows i would never donate to any adaptive program.
i had a little rant for ya lee, but really whats the point, your an insecure one eyed lawyer geek, and well ,i just could care less about you.

braapstar?..your not jealous of a cripple are you? do i know you? did i do something to you? did i pass you like you were standing still on a trail?its okay braapstar, i'm pretty sure you couldn't roll a foot in my wheels.
i make a living being nice to people braapstar. you just don't have a clue.
  • 1 2
and to be honest, i would stick up for any world champion in any sport that gets a bum rap with the media or on the interweb. deal with it.
  • 5 1
you make a living at a grocery store you make a name for yourself being a prick and i'm stoked someone else called you out on it
  • 7 1
Lee and braapstar speak the truth. Witnessed so many shitty incidents over the years. Why they don't revoke your pass I'll never know. Nice to see the truth always comes out in the end.......ahh the internet.
  • 8 1
stacey the only people you get ahead of on the trail are punters, and people who are so stoked to meet you, the legend, that they want to do a lap behind you down a-line. then they realize you're just a legendary prick and ditch you.
the things this bike park has done to accommodate you exclusively over the years blows my mind. and then you turn around and be the worst possible representative of our community possible.
maybe there is a nice version of you that behaves at the grocery store and appears to be a good person.
but what do you have to say for yourself, for all the lifties you've treated like shit.
what about all the guest relations people you've freaked out on for whatever reason.
what about the unfortunate person standing in line somewhere in town who didn't expect some 4' tall a*shole on wheels to tear a strip off of them for not realizing you needed to get by.
what happened to johnny? the guy in the wheelchair who isn't a dick to anybody. i'd bend over backwards for that guy.
maybe you do know me, maybe you don't.
The fact is this could have come from hundreds of people in town who think you're a dick
  • 4 1
The stuff about people being jealous doesn't cut it. Do you read comments like this after articles about Aaron Gwin, Steve Peat, etc. I don't know much about Brian Lopes, but obviously something about him offends people in a way that makes them want to lash out. It's too bad for him as reading this stuff can't be fun. Perhaps, Brian, you would be better off to embrace this image, like a WWF bad-guy!
  • 2 2
Crapstirrer and leelaudmouth u definately got yer own bag a shit to sort out...disrespectful losers. Know when to respect yer muthf*ckin elders. Stacy and Brian say what they feel. You pussies, and the majority of the "riding scene" whose ass yer balls' deep in, just cant handle when you hear the truth. The hundreds of people who hate these guys have no doubtedly, 100% deserved the rip they got from either of these icons.

Next time you get put in your place just take it, learn from it and shut the he'll up. You'll be a better person for it. This ,slanderish, cowardly hide behind yer anonymous computer screen and talk smack about people u think u know is not cool...at least leelaudmouth is dumb enough to use his real name....brostar is just a coward
  • 1 2
braapstar....hundreds of people in a town that can swell to 20,000 hate me?
really? thats it? thats nothin'.you made it sound like there was an issue or something like that.what percent is that? i am doin' much better than i thought.
my ma and pa would be proud.
  • 2 1
dankmonkey - is English your native tongue? I ask that because I'm having a hard time understand what you're trying to say. I hardly think a johnny-come-lately from Alberta (Stacy) is my biking "elder". I have no problem using my real name dankmonkey and standing by what I say. And like you, and Stacy I'll "say what I feel". I won't hide behind a computer screen. I'll give Stacy credit too for not hiding behind a screen. What's your excuse "dankmonkey"?
  • 2 2
 Brian who?
  • 1 1
 wrong place
