WANTED: DOWNHILL AND CROSS-COUNTRY RIDERS FOR MOUNTAIN BIKE MARATHON

QUEBEC CITY, QC - May 30, 2011 – This year on Canada Day, Red Bull Monte Descend moves to Mont-Sainte-Anne with teams of downhill and cross-country riders racing through the mountain, facing challenging jumps, a wallride, ramps, northsore-type features, and trails in a 90-minute race against the clock. The endurance mountain bike race is taking place during the 9th edition of the Vélirium, THE annual mountain bike festival in Canada. On July 1st, the cross-country athletes will ride the bottom of the mountain for the opening leg of the race, before tagging their teammate for the downhill portion, which races through the mountain. For the next 90 minutes, they’ll repeat the route, racing against the clock and delivering fans some of the fiercest riding in Quebec.

Starting at 8:30 p.m. ET, bikers will team-up and make their way through the cross-country portion of the race at the bottom of Mont-Sainte-Anne before relaying with their partner who keeps going with the downhill part of the race. They will ride all the way to the bottom of the mountain, where their teammate will be waiting for them to start the next lap. And if it wasn't enough, another component will challenge the downhill participants, as the trails will be getting darker and darker as night sets in. The winning teams will share $10,000 in cash and prize. The team with the most completed laps will be crowned champ of Red Bull Monte Descend and take home a cash purse of $3,000. Second and third place teams will receive $1,500 and $700 respectively.

HOW TO REGISTER

Registration is now open via www.velirium.com for all competitors of 16 years old of age and older—skills required. Each team must be composed of one mountain downhill rider and one cross-country rider. Registration will be closing on Wednesday, June 29 at 11:59 p.m. ET and a maximum of 50 teams of 2 riders will be accepted. Cost per athlete is $40 (FQSC license is mandatory).  Sounds like way more of a challenge for the XC guys just because of the endurance.... I guess it depends on the length and grade of their lap though.
