We are so lucky to have so much free media presented to us!
  • + 11
 So true.
  • + 40
Kyle Norbraten with the brake check 360!? I was not aware of the over-rotate-in-order-to-brake technique...
Some of these commentators, I tell ya
  • + 33
 Norbs got robbed.
  • + 8
It technically isn't free. There are ads on PB and that's what funds it. (Unless you use Ad Block...)
  • + 24
even the ads have some awesome content tho Razz

After watching the Red Bull rampage for the 4th time I agree that Sorge got robbed.
  • + 14
maybe redbull should have Rampage and Mountain 7 Psychosis alternately. .one freeride base another for downhill
  • + 5
dust trail from brandon's body is awesome.
  • + 1
The commentators were horrible. What made it worse is the semi script they had to read from. Now after seeing the rampage for a few times...Norbs was definitely robbedWink
  • + 31
Exam time? Of course I have 90 minutes to spare Smile
  • + 16
Jamie Bestwick commentating = drinking game. Used the same phrases over and over and shed zero "rider perspective" worth a damn. Thanks for the coverage NBC but maybe have a real mountain biker commentate on a mountain bike event and not a retired BMX rider. He was a good rider, and he's decent with X Games stuff... But come on!
  • + 6
I thought it was fine. I mean what do you really expect from a mainstream broadcast? I enjoyed it. Also, for the record, although I can see where you are coming from regarding Bestwick - he is ridiculous on a vert ramp. Much respect.
  • + 17
 we need TIPPIE!
  • + 21
brett tippie and rob warner should be the commentators. obvious, if you know anything about big mountain bike riding.
  • + 5
 ^^ Agreed!
  • + 6
NO DOUBT!! Tippie help these dudes out! He hass gotta smile when he reads these comments.
  • + 6
TIPPIE!! and a injured rider to actually give some insight and perceptive.
  • + 4
Yeah was fully thinking it was more a drinking game than what is supposed to be the pinnacle of Big Mountain Riding. The amount of times 'Judges, Big or Utah Fans' amongst others was said was ludicrous. I'm all for taking the sport mainstream but only if its exciting to watch and listen too. It would be like going to a Tool concert only to hear Bieber coming out of the speakers. Rob Warner should be the voice of Mountain Biking...Period!!!
  • + 2
Or force/blackmail/kidnap/torture Cam to have a wireless mic with him so he can commentate and ride at the same time.
  • + 2
Camikaze, I highly recommend seeing Tool, I promise you that won't happen.
  • + 3
Maynard (lead singer of TOOL) bought one of my bikes!!!
www.pinkbike.com/photo/2315841
  • + 1
Yeah have seen them 3 times DARKSTAR, using that as a comparison. Would think if that did happen would rib my ears off right there and then.
  • + 3
Agreed with chyu the best rampage commentary was when Cam McCaul was injured and commentated in 2010. I thought Bestwick was good at calling the tricks at Joyride but, seemed out of his element here. Richie Schley was better but, miss called a few tricks. I am not for the sport going more mainstream. I don't want MTB in the xgames or more people on the trails cause it has become too popular. The only good thing I see about it going mainstream is that the riders get more money and used bike parts get cheaper.
  • + 19
 Norb got robbed. Round 456.
  • - 1
i think im going to start to argue with you. youre wrong. norbs got ROBBED X10000
  • + 7
norbs got robbed. first to say it! after watching that broad cast on saturday, and I watched the full 3 hour online thing when it first happened. I haven't commented on this before but damn, with all three angles and broad cast, each one showed how much the judging sucked more and more....hope that the next one is better (judged). the riding was SICK none the less! entertaining...on mute!
  • + 3
i really think the 3's were insane! but remember they judge on line choice too! i honestly think that the left ridge that Norbs rode [up top] was way easier and mellower than the other ridge...
  • + 2
they had a few months to script thier excuses and try to minimize his amazing run. What about Cam's low score being the ONLY guy to do the gap AND he recieved best trick for the huge flip that followed.
  • + 2
Yeah they scripted it to make us feel Kyle didn't get robbed and it kind of worked on me but, now i think Cam got robbed way more.
  • + 4
There's a definitely a different perspective watching this than there was being there and watching it as it happened... I feel as though this version captured the majesty and the massive scope of Rampage's location, but failed to communicate the spirit and the rush of the actual riding. To be completely honest, it almost felt like I was watching another fake reality show from NBC. It wasn't Jamie or his fellow commentator, but there was an element of 'overproduction' that I hate to see Rampage adopt. I did find the POV riding footage incredibly sick and a little stomach-tossing. Thanks for posting this up for us, Pinkbike.
  • + 8
Actually, scratch that -- I want Rob in here with his awesome announcing and wonky comments.
  • - 1
Yeah screw NBC for broadcasting the Rampage for free with incredible angles and quality that you usually only see in films!!!
  • + 7
Oh, shut up. That's not what I said, you illiterate hack. Read the comment in its entirety or don't bother commenting.
  • + 3
 Haha, awesome.

"... but there was an element of 'overproduction' that I hate to see Rampage adopt."

Don't you ever hack a hacker, you hack. That's worse than trying to snake a snaker.
  • + 5
 Overproduction is one thing....

But comparing Rampage to this

it almost felt like I was watching another fake reality show from NBC

Where is the eyeroll?

Ok I do get the point ambatt, but you can't deny that was simply bad choice of wording!
  • + 3
You two must have also missed the part where I said, "This version captured the majesty and the massive scope of Rampage's location, but failed to communicate the spirit and the rush of the actual riding...". I was there. I felt how amazing it was, and they failed to communicate that.

For example: Sal Masakela wasn't even there the day of the finals but they edited him into the post-production video as though he was; they also heavily commentated and voiced over the crowd cheers and failed to communicate to the public the extreme energy and stoke that goes on at Rampage. That's called 'overproduction', fellas. And the fellow doing the NBC voiceover? Guess what? He's the same voice from the Bachelor. So... Yes. 'Another fake reality show' fits because they used the same voice from one of their fake reality shows. But that comes with going mainstream, I suppose.

It's partly an opinion, guys... It also is partly fact. Everyone is allowed to voice theirs, so sarcastic replies (scott-townes) and arguing about "bad wording" (Konad) is really just pointless. I made a statement about how fake watching this felt, and that statement was pretty final... It still is.

Oh, and Konad - the eyeroll was at the top. Wink
  • + 2
it would be nice if NBC invested in the project before it was amazingly filmed. They just bought it and ruined the comentator. They should have used the original voices of Mtn. Biking and added their crappy EmCee's to cut away to comercials.
  • + 1
 ^^ You're absolutely right.
  • + 1
ambatt- I've been attending since they brought it back but also grew up watching since the first one and I've gotta say the only real way you can really get a feel for the energy the Rampage creates is to actually attend. Even the Rampage movies hardly show the excitement/intensity/epicness when you see it in person... plus it was a mainstream broadcast as just a competition, instead of a "documentary" style so it's expected for them to pull stuff like having an announcer from the Bachelor... haha. I guess what I'm trying to say is it's impossible for them to show an audience, where a good part probably have never mtb before, all the underlying things that goes on down there. Remember also that this TV series is a very new project for Red Bull and the first time ever this has been broadcasted to such a large audience so maybe if the ratings were good enough, they will do a better job next year... although that's probably very wishful thinking... haha.

Also it's just the internet. Sarcasm is going to happen because without sarcasm there would be no internet or facebook! That's a scary fact!
  • + 5
Completely epic. Surprised this sport hasn't been recognized by X Games sooner
  • + 1
Love to see the free ride exposure butt... Love even more that Sal acting as though he was there during event when he was obviously there a few days before. And as jsawatzky said above, love announcer saying: Norbraten over rotates to brake check (WTF).
  • + 1
 phrasing?
  • + 2
Dear nerds, I would like to save this as I normally would to Vimeo or Youtube so that I can watch it full-size on Apple TV. How would you go about doing this with this video player?
  • + 1
I guess PB doesn't want us to promote those tricks. If they liked that, they would have provided a download option. I guess.
  • + 1
I'm not sure it's PB's doing. NSMB has the same video in the same player. I think it's Redbull's doing.
  • + 1
There's lots wrong with this broadcast, but in being able to watch it a few times again, it just reaffirms my love for mountain biking....

my top 3:
Norbs
Sorge
Cam McCaul

Like in any subjective sport, it's always tough going first cause everyone is supposed to measure up, and typically you get a low(ish) scorebut still....great run Kyle. Maybe in two years you'll draw a better starting number and have the benefit of that...
  • + 6
 I hate my I phone...
  • + 16
reminds me of a joke. why didn't the justice league get iphones? they don't support flash!
  • + 2
Wow, this is what happens when a big company broadcasts bike events. What a boost in image quality and camera angles. I'm completely stoked. Thanks NBC!!!
  • + 1
I'm just wondering, what would they show us on RB rampage movie? I mean that we have already seen so much different footages from this year rampage that it is almost impossible to show something more...
  • + 1
The commentators should be replaced with Rob Warner..!!! It would be so much better.. Riders put in so much level and effort into the competition, and commentators like that don't give them the attention deserved..
  • + 3
some commentators annoy me,.,...the 1st run he's all like 'WOW thats a huge gap' likes he taking the piss ahaha
  • + 4
I think everybody knows that Norbs got robbed...
  • + 4
I dont have 90 minutes, but my maths homework can wait
  • + 4
Where's Rob Warner when we need him the most?
  • + 2
Sorge's huge stepdown back flip with his huge super man was insane i am so stoked that he took first!!!
  • + 1
Jamie Bestwick=fail as a commentator. Way to fail it up NBC. Bring the TIPPIE back.

Jamie said nothing but the same stuff over and over. FAIL
  • + 3
My palms are actually sweating just from watching this.
  • + 1
Ok doing my head in i can't watch this on my I pad which sucks ,is there Anywhere else I can watch this footage that will work on an I pad
  • + 2
Well shit, there goes my plans for a productive Tuesday afternoon. Thanks guys...
  • + 1
Thanks PINKBIKE!!!! I dont get "broadcast TV or cable- cool to see it like this, but it was WAY cooler BEING THERE!!! EVERYONE who can should GO!!!!
  • + 1
They didn't get any crowd energy at all...the place was raging! It doesn't do the riders justice either, every rider rocked it! That place is SICK
  • + 1
"the speed is building all the time" wish he would not say that as much yes the speed build but not all the time sometimes they are slowing down..... ass hole commentator
  • + 2
I can see why they posted twice about the judging. The french guy and cam mccaul (70 pts?) come to mind
  • + 2
I watched this on Saterday. Loved it. Only wish the riders were equipped with live broadcast cameras.
  • + 2
In Red Bull's Supernatural snowboard competition put on by Travis Rice, all the riders were riding with Contour camera's linked to a computer someplace because they were showing cam shots immediately afterwards, so although not "real-time" they're already processing the view's VERY quickly for us to see. Much like here. Only a matter of time! If there is one thing positive about the Red Bull broadcasts, they do cover all the camera angles amazingly well.
  • + 3
Fast forward through all the parts where Sal Masekela talks.
  • + 1
prefer rider commentary and rad music over this, but glad to see it getting exposure
  • + 1
Thanks Pinkbike. I couldn't pass up some early season back country skiing on Saturday when NBC showed this the first time.
  • + 1
I was waiting for this video... details of the contest are nice!!! this guys are rad
  • + 1
The Claw running XT Trail brakes at Rampage? Making me feel better about my choice Smile
  • + 1
What about him not running a Demo8?
  • + 1
The Status isn't that far off from the Demo in terms of performance. Word is Martin S and The Claw choose the Status because of the higher bb height. I was just shocked cause if I was hurling myself down cliffs I'd prob prefer Saints over the XT Trails but this looks good for the performance of XT Trail brakes
  • + 2
boring commentators talking rubbish. could've been pre-recorded
  • + 2
all the commentator talks about is how dangerous the course is.
  • + 1
Seriously go back to BMX jamie, you suck as a announcer for mtn biking. Should have hade Richie Shley do it for NBC
  • + 0
is this aimed at me? can't seriously believe that this was a fair event....
  • + 2
Love. But these commentators? Come on Razz
  • + 1
F*$K the judging!!!! I hope they replace every judge for the next rampage, lets hope this time is actually fair!!!!
  • + 1
is it as bad as the Crankworx one was? ahhh nevermind, it's mainstream tv, of course it is.
  • + 1
Sweet baby Jesus! I gotta get home to watch it on a bigger screen than 3"!
  • + 1
Well the judges ruined this rampage... Way to spoil the spirit of the event
