Steve Smith and Rachel Atherton are the fastest in practice. Timed training isn't a race run, so it's hard to tell too much from these, but seeing as Rachel smoked everyone by nearly 17 seconds, we'd say that the writing is on the wall there. It looks like Steve Smith's special Worlds bike is doing the business, at least for now, and Mitch Ropelato posted that second fastest time in the mens training on an Enduro 29...
So, my maths makes that a 2% performance variable over a 4 minute world standard DH track for the top 7, with top pro riders on a variety of bikes from a 26 inch trail bike, a couple of 26 inch DH rigs, a 29er and 650b. I know it's only practice and race day will probably be different, but to me that proves no need to change to any of the new standards yet unless you are a pro. My kudos goes to Graves on a 26 inch trail bike. Just shows how capable they are......!
@Daddybear most of the chicks are faster than me too but at least there not being a pussies and riding a wheel size that you see retired old men with saggy lycra on hanging around coffee shops in upper class suburbs!
@heavyp, Ropelato didn't choose to take this bike, Specialized must have decided for him, to my mind he's just a pion in the specialized's marketing plan
@fitjoani, ropelato took his custom demo 8 they did for him and the 29er. There is an interview on vitalmtb about it and he said he felt comfortable on The 29er so he's going with it. Brosnan and Gwin were giving him shit about it.
@fitjoani, Ropo made the decision himself. He did a run on the 29er and decided that it suited him better on the track than the DH rig. No Specialized puppetry going on there at all.
@heavyp u such a prick and i don't see the point off hatin on someone who's usin an other "style" of bike on this kind of track....... lot's of other pilot use prototype with less travel......@heavyp mitch may be faster than you on this track with a bmx wich is 20"
This wheel size banter is really getting boring. Comments like heavyp's are completely ignorant. For all of you posting negativity of different wheels: for 1) keep your stupid comments to yourself. For 2) back your comments up with fact. Why not post how many hours you have ridden on each wheel size before you say anything.
heavyp is such a douche canoe... Mitch is picking the best bike he feels can win on this particular course. The course is more pedally and less gnarly than a normal WC course. Why would he want a heavier, less efficient bike for a such smooth, less technical course? Props to him for trying to think outside the box and choose what feels best for him.
Wasn't Mitch 2nd? Obviously you are a semi-retarded moron who can't read!!!! You suck at riding and at life..... Why don't you go watch the '96 world champs vid on your VHS, tune up your carburetor and play your guns n roses cassette tape.....GO HOME LOSER
Ladies and Gents of the Board : what if, Graves was on a 29er and he just beat the crap out of everyone in practice ? Would that be an unfair advantage ? Would you as a regulator ban 29ers or big calves ?
I've felt obliged to offer my own personal opinion reading these comments. Each rider has to use the tools legally allowed at his disposal to win the race, therefore props to the lads using the trail bikes and 29ner's. Okay it's only timed practice after all, Smith came in fastest, but the general consensus would be that Ropelato may not even be the 10th quickest rider on the field any given day using like for like rigs, so he (or team) have simply out thought the others. I understand the attraction of spreading the world cup series throughout the world, but the UCI needs to take a think about what it wants downhilling to be, and in my book, not only is this track a joke but having the most important race of the year here is a complete shambles! No disrespect to Pietermaritzburg, this is what they have presented and has been approved by the organisers, lets hope there is not bribes taking place here, we are aware of certain allegations in the past directed towards UCI officials in the road cycling world. If I was Aussie / Kiwi / South American, I'd be sick to the teeth that with what we are seeing here given the quality of tracks at your disposal. Lets get the facts straight here - give Sir Chris Hoy or any other track cycling professional two weeks on this track and they'd probably toast these downhillers here simply because they have thighs like busses requiring little skill.. It's about time the riders got together (an association of professionals if it does not already exist) gave UCI the finger and demanded a change to the course selection criteria. This should limit the merits of using varied wheels sizes and resign the wheel size debate to the history books. bear mind, the above is off the cuff thoughts - I don't even know if wheel size is restricted, or whether the definition of a trail bike is allowed to be used come race day.... Either way, I like to see the world champions being spread about, gunning for the chainsaw massacre!!! Get in Stevie!!!!!
So much anger, Mitch's a great rider and person, who cares about the bike he chooses, there's obviously no one absolute advantage out there, carbon, alum, or wheel size, so let riding do the talking.....
This whole wheel size crying game will be over eventually. Remember Carbon? How everyone here told you that you'd die if you rode a carbon bike? How they couldn't handle the stress of mountain biking, how they were all experts, how the industry was a giant scam, etc....etc....etc...etc....
Every time something new comes out the majority of the community here throws a tantrum and cries about it. Then they realize no one cares what they think and that we're all to busy worrying about our own bikes and actually riding and then they get over it.
Same thing will happen with this. So let them cry and throw their tantrums, it's already dying down and will be even more so soon.
I think what @heavyp was getting at touches on this.
If people wanted to be able to gain an edge they would wear a skin suit take there peak off there helmet and cover up the vents! Do you think people used to wear them cause they wanted to look good? No fact was they make you faster but the UCI banned them because they gave the sport of downhill a bad look, isnt riding a bike that is supposedly faster but looks as if it belongs in an XC/Enduro race and not a DH race falling into the same subject ?
Will be hilarious if some of the top guys on 26" are scrambling to get 29ers if Mitch is up near the top after qualification results, in a last minute bid to be competitive.
Minnar and Peaty putting DH forks on 29 Bronson woulda be a good combo if they had time to get used to it, but their fork sponsors don't make them in 29.
Plus she was only 6th through the speed-trap. Bonkers.
I think it also says a lot about the track when Caroline Buchanan, whilst a phenomenal bike handler, is primarily a BMX and 4X racer, can come and grab 4th. Yes this is only timed training but be interesting to see if that carries through to tomorrow.
@jfyfe that's a good guess actually, the womens field does tend to case the tables (not making fun of chicks, those tables are massssive at fort bill and here)
Its timed training people means nothing, save energy get track dialled, its not even the timed runs that count for seeding HELLO!
Nothing can be deduced by these times just look at all the bigger names further down, Hill was supposedly one do the fastest on track, he is legendary for getting his runs dialled in 4 or 5 runs he doesn't need to flog himself, Emmeline I do hope is ok, DNF may not mean anything so hopefully shes just missed practice timing not injured, Im a big Rach fan but also Emmeline so hopefully come Sunday she and Rach can have a battle royal!
Stevie Smith is definitely on it, I would love to see him regardless of what bike he's pooping on, be awesome, but want so many riders to do well, ESP Kiwis, Peaty, GM, Rat, Bulldog, Blienky, GeorgeB, Wyn, GM, Hart attack, Hill, Smith!
Dam it just give all these guys and girls the title and have a massive big bonfire, Sarfie beer, Boerewors and party like its 1999!
As people complain about this not being a "real" DH course, remember that is even more true of Canberra - where Peaty got his only World Champs win, by a few hundredths of a second. I am pretty sure the MtB world doesn't shun Peaty's win because it wasn't on a "real" track. Lots of prototype equipment and one-off experiments there too.
Smith, Mitch, and Hannah in the top 4 along with Gee. All three are running some sort of protoype this week. Not their usual DH rig. They may be pushing a bit more to see where they stand on their particular bike choice.
As many guys have said after last years race....they do not class this as areal dh track because of the pedalling. Sam hill said it last year and steve smith. Steve Smith rode this track last year and said after it, he could have ridden his trail bike on the track because it was so pedally. Hence why devinci custom designed a bike specificly for this race. Guys are opting for different size wheels etc because it is less technical and more rollable. Proven fact, bigger wheels roll alot better and carry more speed. Good luck steve smith. Im rooting for sam, but either one ill be happy. Shit....i even want Gwin to be on podium aswell.
No, I love Gwin, hes an awesome rider, humble, a good sportsman and after last years results and this years bad results, he deserves a podium place for just trying and for purely just not bitching about his poor results this year, like alot of riders do.
It's interesting that Graves is losing so much more in sector 1 than Mitch Ropelato. 3.1 seconds on the most technical part of the course, both on trail bikes but Graves with a lot more travel up front. It's the only technical sector on the track and the Enduro 29er is way faster than a big travel 26er. To be 6th fastest overall in that sector is amazing on that bike.
Pike 160 on th Enduro29 vs a Float 180 on th SB66. 20mm is not "a lot more travel up front". Both are great forks (personally give the edge to the Pike) an Mitch has a hair more travel outback. The size of the wheels and the rider are the biggest differences.
That's what I'm saying but Mich is not a top 5 rider normally so if he keeps this up for finals it will prove that the enduro 29 is the bike for this course.
I really will never know why they use this for the DOWN HILL world championships when it really isn't a true DH track if someone on a 29er enduro can come second in timed runs ! I think the world champs track should be s track which you needs full DH for ! Anyone agree with me ?
Frankly, each rider has to use the tools he's allowed to use at his disposal to win the race, therefore props to the lads using the trail bikes and 29ner's. Okay it's clear this is only timed practice and Smith came in fastest, but the general concensus would be that Ropelato may not even be the 10th quickest rider on the field on any given day using like for like rigs, so he (or his team) have simply out thought the others. Richie Rude (junior PMB winner) had a winning time that would have out him in 5th on this list!! So that means his time was bangin' or there's alot of time to be made up on Sunday. I'm Stoked to watch the racing!
LMFAO !!!!!!! Forget the Athertons....now the 29'ers are taking centre stage ???? I f*ckin' love it !!!! Nice one to the guy, let's see a scrap to the podium !!!!
Part of me is thinking it would be nice to see a wheel/bike standard implemented for this race. Only because I want to see the best man win, which usually there would be any given 5 or so guys that would take it. Now, with a 29er in the mix, if it won, or even got top 10, I'm skeptical of the man/machine mix. I'll just say it...if Mitch wins, in my eyes, his bike won. And I won't have seen a fair, even race. There's a reason for implementing standards against blatant advantages in racing, so you see the best man win.
anyone could have chosen a 29er if they wanted, they just felt theyd be faster on a 26, its not like mitch is cheating as far as i can see, everyone else could have done the same
It's obviously a track that favors the bigger wheel - No surprise with Stevie either way, but Rope! If Minnaar ,Hannah, Gee etc, don't go bigger, they haven't a chance. Sad but true.
It's all about big wheels on this course - and being clipped in. That's reality - no peddeling efficiency on flats, no upward pull or side push. Fact:: at the same speeds a larger diameter wheel can cover more ground than a smaller one (which would need more rotations (ie speed) to equal the distance of the larger wheel.) Now put the bigger wheel under Stevie - game over. On this course, the fitness and skills of the top guys will be seperated by their wheel choice. Hate me if you must.
I think the Specialized does not indicate for gwin, when he was in Trek World Racing he did a great job,won almost every race, but now he is 69th in qualification....
It's not qualification, it is timed practice. And Sam Hill in in 68th... it is fairly common for the top riders to not give it a real 100% run, many stop and check things out still
Sheeesh!............. easy bro........(stop getting ur knickers in a knot).......this is called "having a laugh' 'poking a bit of fun" you ever heard of that?
what if, Graves was on a 29er and he just beat the crap out of everyone in practice ?
Would that be an unfair advantage ?
Would you as a regulator ban 29ers or big calves ?
Peace, long live human powered machines !
