Rumble in the Concrete Jungle - January 11

Wait? What? Rumble in the Concrete Jungle? At the USNWC? Isn't that where the US Olympic whitewater slalom racers train? What the?...... Yep, On any normal day during the warm months the pic you see is nothing like shown below. "Normal" means the 3,750 foot channel is filled with 12 million gallons of whitewater, where you just might catch a glimpse of local Carolina whitewater legends Pat Keller or Chris Gragtmans honing their stroke skills as they conjure up their next "over the falls" assault. In the mist of the winter months, the folks at the Center have come up with something just a bit different for those of us that might be suffering withdrawals from our two wheeled racing season. Gone is the essence of wetness and in it's place the hard coarse granular material bound with cement, also know as concrete. What's in store for the Rumble? Some type of Urban Downhill is guaranteed, with the minute details being working out as we speak to fill each of our little concrete desires. Who's stoked for something different during the off season!

In just a few short weeks the drained Class IV rapids will be transformed into an Urban DH Race course. It ll be interesting to see what the crew from the US National Whitewater Center come up with.
Soon to be your Concrete Jungle for an all-out two wheeled rumble! - photo: Jay Schultz GoJaMMedia

Not sure what to expect with this, or even what bike to use. Will there be any additional info on course layout, obstacles, or even an idea on what to expect, or what kind of bike would be ideal here?
  • 2 0
Not really sure as we are justing passing through the information provided by the USNWC Marketing folks. Last I did ask about the course, they were still working on the details. We can certainly ask the question and see where it goes. Stay tuned.

 4x bike?

It seems like a lighter-weight AM bike would be the way to go... this is a tight idea. can't wait to see how it turns out.

For all of the Dirt Jump goons we have a sweet set of trails 20 minutes from this event.
If you want to check them out there are some photos posted under "Fruit Trails" on my profile.
Get in touch if you would be down to go check them out!

This is a great idea. I hope there are tons of obstacles, or else I see a road bike winning.

We stopped by the venue today to check things out on a trip to IKEA this morning. There's a couple of places on course that we assume they will need some sort of transition as the concrete steps up anywhere from 6 to 8 inches. I'd assume when they add these, they'd be some king of jump. There's also two spots at the end of the course where it drops 8 to 10 inches. We've been in contact with the Marketing folks there over all this week, so expect to see some more details soon.

Any good sales at IKEA? Hahaa. Looks like a fun place to ride for sure.

21 feet of elevation change and 8-10 inch drops? Sounds extreme! Haha it will be a fun challenge for the course designers. The layout looks like it has a lot of potential and I'm sure it will be an interesting course, have fun out there!

Mrgonzo, It's actually a great course for canoe slalom. I lived here when I was on the team and training full time. There are trails around the facility that aren't too bad either. The old Super D course is actually on the same property. Is the race being held when they clean the bottom and service the pumps then? Glad it's getting some use in the off season.

I hope this adds some clarification:

Rumble does not fit neatly into any standard cycling discipline and that’s part of what makes it so cool. Our facility provides us the opportunity to bring something new and different to the table which borrows from several genres, and creates an entirely new experience. Here’s the low-down; The course will follow the descent of our whitewater channels, which resemble concrete drainage ditches with a bunch of boulders and ledges thrown in. The overall elevation drop is only about 21 feet from top to bottom, so it’s not a typical “downhill” course. The idea is to slalom down the channel carving the banked sides up and over obstacles, dropping off of ledges, and hitting jumps. You will have to pedal, pump, and there may even be a climb in there somewhere, but mostly it will be like bombing a snake run in the worlds weirdest skate park.

Hmmm, I live in hickory and it's hard to imagine that this would be enough of a course to accomplish much but I'll reserve judgment until the race, personally some kind of urban freeride deal would work well in downtown Asheville I'd think.
  • 3 0
Boone could have some promising spots as well....
  • 2 0
Im from the hickory area also and I agree with both of you guys. Charlotte wouldnt have been my first guess on where they would hold an urban downhill race. I hope it goes well though. Maybe it will help people in the area start to recognize the sport.

Hey all: We are very excited about this race and the possibilities associated with the emptied concrete channels. Our team will be riding the course during the next few weeks in order to get more solidified course designs. There will be plenty of time to drop in the channels during the 3 hour practice session, so make sure to come out early race day. If you have any specific questions, please contact us at: racedirector@usnwc.org. It should be a great first year event and we look forward to seeing you out.

looks like I'll get an early chance to test out my new RePlay camera! gotta pick up some DJ tires (Bontrager G1? Schwalbe HS356 Crazy Bob or HS430 Big Apple in 26x2.35? Holy Rollers?) and try to pry the Continentals off of my 6" bike, but that should be all I have to do

Thanks to everyone who came out and raced yesterday. We hope y'all had a blast and will join us out here again. For those who haven't seen, results have been posted: usnwc.org/rumble-in-the-concrete-jungle/#results

We look forward to the next one.

Can't wait to do this. Got to play in it a couple years ago when it was drained. I really hope they put good use to the hips all down the channel. Stoked for sure to see how this goes!

01-10-14. IMPORTANT - this has been postponed one day due to the rain the area is today and will be getting tomorrow. Race day is now Sunday January 12th. One "pro" is confirmed and there's a rumor another WC DHer will be there as well. See you all on Sunday.

I think in the winter, downhill riders should move into the cities and race urban downhill courses.

 Gravity Pirates
  • 2 1
Yes sir, nothing like some sweet gravity fed urban shredding... Big Grin

21 foot drop in elevation in 3750 feet? doesn't sound very "downhill" to me.
  • 1 2
This race should be one of those, World Cup Eliminator style race's for this location or even a more urban mtb dual or single slalom races. It would seem that such a high profile place like the US Water Center, in a world class city of Charlotte, with a international airport, two major interstates crossing nearby, would be holding a UCI World Cup XC, with the Eliminator race and/or even USAC PRO XCT and PRO UET and maybe at the least one of those US CUP XC races. If you have never been to the white water center, its has great facilities worth checking out once. But, calling it a downhill race, really? Enjoy the race and ride.

Looks interesting. At least they are trying something different.
  • 1 0
All, the guys at the Center told me they signed up with a PB account and will answer some of your questions. I would expect to see some interaction very soon.

The folks at the USNWC sent me the following pic.... they are currently exploring options for the course. www.pinkbike.com/photo/10429853

I'm in, this should be fun, who cares about placing, just do it for the fun and beer afterward!
  • 2 0
 Is there enough elevation ??
  • 1 0
21 ft, so you will have to fuel up those pedal legs.
  • 2 0
So, is the DH course included in this elevation? Other words is it actual DH or more like a mix of climbing and gravity fed?
  • 2 1
That I don't know. The 21 feet is the elevation of the whitewater channel (only thing I know). I've mentioned to the folks at the center the most questions are in regards to the plan for the course. I haven't heard anything back yet, but I will keep trying.
  • 2 1
Hell yeah!!!! I am game for this and my son as well. I'll bring the big bikes for the hell of it...lol.
  • 2 0
 Will it be enduro rated??
