Sam Hill's Nukeproof Pulse - Hafjell World Cup

Nukeproof Pulse

Sam's Nukeproof race bike may appear to be a standard Pulse in team colours, but as you might expect, that is far from the case. From a one-off hybrid frame that is half way in size between a medium and large, prototype 'First Ride' tires from Schwalbe, and a healthy dose of very special BlackBox suspension from RockShox, this is one machine that deserves a second look. Lovingly looked after by Brooks Cardwell, Sam's mechanic, the blue, yellow, and white bike weighs in at a claimed 38 pounds even, which is certainly a few pounds heavier than some of the flyweight rigs on the World Cup circuit, but having spent a considerable amount of time on a Pulse test bike of our own we can attest to the bike's brawny "I can go straight through that" personality. Think more along the lines of George Foreman in his prime rather than Muhammad Ali and his fast footwork.

bigquotesHe did the first half of the year on a stock medium and is now riding the (custom) medium/large to see if he prefers it. - Nigel Page, team manager

The medium-sized production Pulse that Hill raced aboard during the first half of the year features an effective top tube length of 605mm/23.8", a number which is pretty much inline with many other production frames on the market. It sounds as if Hill was looking for a little more real estate up front, though, as the frame that he is now racing has had its top tube stretched out by 12.5mm to 617.5mm/24.3''. That may not sound like much, but it goes along with the current trend that is seeing racers looking for a longer front-center, and therefore a slightly longer wheelbase as well. This last number has been further increased by the Nukeproof AS1 fixed, angle-adjusting headset that slackens the Pulse out from its stock 63° to what we would say is a pro-only 62° number. Not trying
to qualify for a World Cup? Don't spend your time on Champéry-esque terrain? Then you don't need that 62° head angle. At the other end of the bike, Hill is usually a fan of the shorter 435mm/17.1'' setting that the Pulse's interchangeable dropout inserts allow. ''Sam mainly uses the shorter rear setting,'' says team manager Nigel Page. ''But he does put it in the long setting for tracks like Pietermaritzburg where there are no tight turns and just high speeds.'' It's certainly interesting to hear that Hill prefers the shorter mode over the bike's 445mm/17.5'' long setting, possibly a preference that comes from bikes with short rear ends that he's ridden in the past?

Suspension Design

Hill's Pulse is equipped with a BlackBox-spec Vivid R2C shock from RockShox that undoubtedly has some special tweaks hidden within it that meet Sam's needs, and a 400lb titanium spring is used to shave a few precious grams. The bike's single pivot, linkage activated suspension design uses a compact and nearly hidden linkage, and it certainly appears that the designers have put reliability and rigidity higher than light weight or designer looks on the priority list. The two short, stout links that connect the swing arm to the rocker arm are home to four angular contact bearings, two on each side, as well as C-clips that act to keep the bearings from shifting in their bores over time, and steel and aluminum hardware holds everything together. The one-piece rocker arm rotates from above on a captive pivot, and the bike's shock mounts via a steel bolt and an easily replaceable nut on the non-drive side.

The build kit

Not surprisingly, Sam's bike is spec'd with a number of signature parts from Nukeproof, including a 38mm rise alloy handlebar that measures in at 760mm wide, and a direct-mount stem that sits atop what looks like a 5mm riser plate. All of the above makes for a tall cockpit compared to how most of the average downhillers set their bikes up, and it likely takes a pretty aggressive approach to make work, something that a rider like Hill certainly has no problem doing. His seat uses uses a pleated top cover to keep him from sliding around in nasty conditions, although Sam seems to run it year round, including during the fast and dusty Pietermaritzburg World Champs in South Africa a few weeks ago. Platforms are on the bike, with Hill running a set of Nukeproof Neutrons with titanium axles. The only carbon on Hill's Pulse is a set of X0 DH cranks from Truvativ and the BlackBox brake levers that bear his name, with Hill preferring to use a set of X0 Trail master cylinders paired a set of four piston Code calipers from Avid. While there were countless words put down online and in print going over Hill's move from Specialized to ride the Pulse, most ignored the fact
that he was also going from using Specialized's own rubber to German tire company Schwalbe. Many of us are quite particular about the tires we use, with riders often swearing by one brand or another, so it's no small thing for a pro contending for World Cup wins to switch it up. He is obviously getting along quite well with the Schwalbe rubber, though, as we've seen plenty of the tricky inside lines that he's known for during this season.

The drivetrain is a mix of off the shelf components and bits that mere mortals can only dream about... for now, at least. Sam is running a LG1+ Turbo guide from e*thirteen that offers maximum protection compared to the trimmer LG1+ guide and its taco slider, and like many World Cup racers his cassette is trimmed down by a few cogs and features a guard to keep the chain from going into the spokes during a worst-case scenario. The bike's derailleur may have the markings of an XX1 unit, but its shorter than stock cage signifies its intentions as a downhill-only item, as well as a component that is only available to BlackBox racers.
bigquotesSam is using Code calipers for a bit of extra power on the big World Cup tracks, but he likes the feel of the X0 Trail levers, so uses that combo. - Nigel Page, team manager

It ain t his BMX bike but Sam Hill is feeling it. He s won here before and with the momentum from Andorra Hill is out for blood.

Demo is to slack, unnecessary extra linkage, and way to overpriced ( eapecialy with the ugly black boxers that look like 2000 marzocchi 888's)

When ur the " fastest dh racer" ( gee atherton is faster and stylier) u can not care as much as u want. So gwin is excluded.

 Cedric Gracia was definitely 'stylier'...

Sam Hills style >>>>>> Gee's style
  • 34 0
Cedric was a showman. Sam has effortless, wide open style.

I had a specialized and i rode a nukeproof once wilst out on a ride ... I now Own a nukeproof, nothing to do with Sam really, just a really good bike!

Gee is more stylish than Gwin? I suggest you watch 3 minute gaps again or that Shimano video he did. Gwin's style is ridiculous when he wants to. Best scrubs out there. Also I don't remember Gee winning multiple world cups by 5-8 seconds. Gwin is having an off year, nothing more. He'll be back.

And I like a number of riders more than Gwin but so many idiots like putting him down. IMO Blenkinsop is the most stylish rider. Effortless.
  • 42 14
@samsemtex: I suggest you watch Gee's Rampage run. End
  • 6 8
They have thier own style. It comes down the how flashy or attractive style is. I agree though gee is more flashy than gwin. But neither of then are very flashy. gee fan flare it up amazingly though when he needs too. Hill has a very unique effortless style which looks amazing. I suggest you watch more than 3MG gwins very moto but its not really anything special style wise.

Ive seen Gee's rampage run, its smooth and flowy and quite brilliant but i wouldnt say it oozes style. I dont think either of them are flashy riders but Gwin has better whips and scrubs than Gee. Gee is one of the least flashy riders on the circuit (in his race runs). If i was to choose any rider to say Gwin isnt stylish in comparison to it just wouldnt be Gee, thats what im saying.

I like smooth and flowy by the way, id prefer watch both Gee and Gwin ahead of CG, his style doesnt do a lot for me.

The Nukeproof is just too cheap compared to a Demo.

Style is fun to watch and all but this is downhill. The ONLY thing that matters is that you make that clock flash green enough at the end of your run so nobody else can do it again after you.
  • 6 4
 i don't want a nukeproof. i want a knolly podium.
  • 8 5
Who gives two shits about style in WC races!? You don't get points for scrubs or whips. Crankworx has come and gone my friends!!
  • 2 1
Every rider has their own style and it plays a big role in all forms of MTB including WC races. A lot of people care about it! I personally like Stevie Smith's style, but I also like Brendan Fairclough's style.
  • 2 0
Sam Hill developed the geometry on the Demo, so it's no surprise that he wants to replicate that geometry on the Pulse
  • 5 2
Sam Hill wins on Demo... Sam Hill tweaks the geometry... Sam Hill stops winning... Gets a new bike... Sam's results get better... Gwin rides Sam's bike... Results get worse. Perhaps he had best leave the geometry well alone.
  • 2 1
wrong i know no one who wants a frwaking catalogue brand peice of crap its like "hey look a transi.... oh wait it just a different color scheme"
  • 2 2
@mxlemming... Sam won a World Championship and took the World Cup Overall on board a Demo with exactly the geometry he wanted at that time. Last year Sam finished 5th overall on a Demo, and now he currently sits 6th. So, I wouldn't say he is better this year
  • 2 0
He's currently sitting 5th in the overall, 6th in the UCI rankings which take pmb into account. So he's doing about the same, while everyone else is going faster, so I would say he's faster on the nukeproof in my opinion
  • 6 1
You guys keep talking about bikes geo as if with the perfect geo, everybody would cross the finish line with the exact same time. Hart isn't great in the mud because the glory's geo is a better fit in the mud, Hart is better than most in the wet because... Hart is great in the wet. Have you ever considered that maybe Gee and Stevie are winning this year because they trained better, harder, are more victory hungry and mentally strong this season than say, Hill or Gwin? Hill was sitting at the top and he's struggling to get back on the podium, same for Gwin. Would it be possible that maybe Gwin would have the exact same fate this year if he stayed with Trek?

Once you reach the top, you can only go down.
  • 1 0
^^legit. But at this level bikes do matter. is there a perfect geometry, no. But a bike can easily make up a second or two and unfortunately at the wc level thats the difference between first a 5th or 10th. The bike is very minimal buts its also highlighted at this level.

Gwin is a poor example mainly because he was on the wrong frame size at the start and his still be changing the bikes geo, his clearly not happy with the geometry.
Would that mean gwin would be on top at trek who knows but he may be a little bit better off.

At the end of the day the rider is what matters 100% agree but at the top level these small percentages the bike makes is a bigger difference, say the bike is only worth 2% for a 4min run that is 4.8seconds. Its a big factor at that level so even if someone is trained higher than another rider their kit can still let them down.

This would assume a perfect run from each rider though and in the world of downhill there is no perfect run. rider>bike but bike is still a factor

Obviously equipment matters but it does in every single sport. Imagine if Rafa Nadal or Djokovic changed their rackets in tennis. I can guarantee you they would make some really bad shots. They might swap rackets and both do worse than they did before. It doesnt mean they are losing because the racket is bad, it means they havent adapted to it. Look at Rory McIlroy since he started playing with Nike clubs, he's pathetic yet plenty of Golfers have won(dominated with Tiger) with nike clubs in the past. the equipment matters but in another way it doesnt if you get what i'm saying.
  • 1 4
Guys, shut up, this argument is three days old already, give up.
  • 2 0
How dare we comment in a comment section, I now see the error of my ways!

I think the bike does have a huge impact but not the way people often claim. There is no perfect geo, it's more about finding the geo that suits you. Hill dominated on a demo and people worshipped the demo until Gwin got on it and now people are saying the demo is a shit bike. Wait, what?

On the other hand, there was a massive backlash at the fury for years and now that Gee is winning with GT, people seem to be taking their sweet time to swallow their pride.

Hey scblurnz, dont get me wrong, im not hatin on it, i love nukeproof, especisly their wheelsets and pedal, everything they make is strong and ligjt, my bike is decked out in nukeproof head to toe, im just not a fan of the new boxxers, i liked the way the 2012's were, stong and smushy with great graphics, the new ones just lack certain things is all.
  • 2 0
@quesadilla34 - What do the new ones lack? The fancy kashima? Dont judge a fork on the looks or graphics on them, its how they perform. Unless youve ridden a 2013 boxxer wc ( which im sure blackbox had their hands on) dont talk smack, it makes you look like an idiot. I looked at your profile, you do a lot of trolling bud.
  • 1 0
I agree, I spend so much time working on my Boxxer WC to make it feel like a Fox 40 that I'll probably never buy one again in the near future, but that black box looks sick on his rig! Don't get me wrong, I do like my Boxxer, but it takes a bit of effort to keep it feeling the way it should. Sam's got Brooks to make all that magic happen.

The reason Iron Horse went bunkrupt is unpaid patents, probably DW link. Rescued by Dorel Industries.

Yeah man, if they make another sunday, i'll buy two or three frames !!! No i dont want phoenix or dhr, i just want an updated sunday reborn next year at 10th anniversary edition *dreaming*
  • 5 0
I still ride a Sunday, been riding 20 years and ridden so many bikes and platforms and for me its the best bike. So ahead of its time, with 63 head angle adjust its as good as any to this day. May not look as aestheticly pleasing to some people but for a totally dialed rear end and bomb proof too, never seen a cracked Sunday!
  • 2 0
Pivot Phoenix is an updated iron horse.
My mate has one and its the sickest bike iv ridden. Shame there as expensive! Frown
  • 1 0
Totally agree. Great bike. Very strong too. But like you say, they're expensive and I doubt it'll feel better than my Sunday. Well not 2500k more anyway lol. I always said I'll keep it till it cracks like all the others! 4 years of serious abuse and still going. Can't complain Wink
  • 1 2
Iron Horse went bankrupt because Dave Weagle the creator of the DW link wanted to leave the company. However Iron Horse felt they held the rights to the DW link and tried to sew him. And we all know how that turned out...
  • 4 0
Sunday is like Ferrari F40 of bikes... the successor is not as good.

sam is way better than he was back on ironhorse, its just the whole field is much better so he stands out less. They all stepped it up, he than got injured and went away for a little bit but the races he was back for he was still quick (he won worlds). Gwin than stepped it up again and the rest had to move forward again.

Sam is better than he was back in 07 its just so is everyone else.
  • 3 4
Have to disagree,Sam ain't the rider he was. Think he peaked young which happens sometimes. He's still good but not anywhere near his old speed. But his priorities have changed, he has a family now, so guess they take lots of his time.

I appreciate these precise presentations of bike and setup. It would be even more interesting and useful though, if you gave the rider's numbers along with it: Sam's height, inseam etc. E.g. the bar is 760mm, which is very narrow by today's DH fashion. How does that relate to his body and the enlarged frame?
  • 2 0
Sam started the custom wide bars thing (along with a few others) as he used to run 720mm bars when the widest production bars were 710mm.

(that's so nerdy, I'll get my coat...)

It's interesting that Sam definately knows what he wants. His iron horse was a shorter rear with a longer front again The demo was tailored to him which we know is very short out back and longer out front. Finally here he is going to that feel again. Sams a rider that knows what he wants.
