Sequence Saturday 53

Mar 2, 2013
by Ian Hylands
When I'm shooting trail shots I sometimes have to search a little for the perfect spot. A couple of years ago while I was shooting with Kirt Voreis for Fox we found this section of trail in Bend Oregon that was pretty awesome, and it looked like the afternoon sun would hit it perfectly. When Kirt started to hammer down the trail he'd pull up a cloud of dust which looked great, but I wasn't sure exactly which of the many small corners on the trail would look the best for a single shot. Whenever I have a question about an exact spot, or the exact moment in a trick, I bump my Nikon D4 up to 11 frames per second (this was shot with a Nikon D3s) and shoot off a sequence. This allows me to go through and look at every moment and see what looks best. I often do this several times from different angles until I'm happy, then I set up lights and get to work on shooting a single banger shot. Check out the sequence below, this was the first sequence I shot of Kirt on this section of trail and he's absolutely destroying it. The final shot we decided on was from a spot on the trail just after the location in the last frame of the sequence, and from a slightly different angle. You can see it at the end of the sequence as it appeared in the catalog and on the website.

The Pinkbike user with the best comment wins a EVOC Protector Vest Air+.

Please keep in mind that we choose the winner based on the best comment, it does not and never has had anything to do with the number of props.  *As narrated by David Attenborough*
The elusive, agile and protein-concerned blue-breasted Cross-Country Rider, as captured here by Ian Hylands, attempts to try and lure the opposite sex in with lavish displays of flat-land speed and flair; Only a Rider with sufficient lateral bar movement and dust plumage will be mating this season.

 genius!!

Hahahah I actually LOLed. Nice work! I hope you get the vest!
  • 2 1

  • 11 2
 Ok, end of contest.
  • 1 3
Actually, look at the last frame, that isn't part of the sequence. There you have your bar movement and dust plumage.

Lucky Voreis! Wink

"TotalChump", I hope you enjoy your new EVOC!

For the purest and most extravagant display of individual prowess we must go beyond this individual in the woods. We have travel here to an eery and perhaps unexpected place, the internet. Here we have come across the pinkbike commenter, or rather a message it has left behind. This message was left in the weekly sequence saturday rut. The details of this message convey to other pinkbike commenters it's high level intellect and humour. These attributes may, at first, seem altogether unextraordinary, but they are essential to prospering in the highly interactive social medium...mate selection...sexual intercourse... This is the same unoriginal comment I have seen being posted all over pinkbike. It can be modified slightly and then tacked on to anything with the same moderate level of humour. Are you guys seriously down? Are we really that easy to amuse?

I bet there is some simple reverse psychology or something that would stop this from getting tonnes of negative props while the extremely "meta" comment that fallows narrating my role in all this though the words of david Attenborough gets thousands. But i think i have already stirred up enough hate here to make that just beyond my grasp.

"Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it." C.S. Lewis.

I'm not saying I've been original. I am mostly certainly farthest from it, and I'm sure the majority of people with a modicum of intelligence can fathom this for themselves without needing to read your condescending and elitist diatribe. I never said it was hilarious or original, I just wrote the first thing that came into my head, as trite as it may seem to you.
Humans have been capable of progressive thought for a long time now, and if one could search through that immense sum of human thought, do you really think there's anything I, or anyone else, could say today that could possibly be considered 'original' and independent of all knowledge that preceded it? I doubt it.

So, if I may put this delicately, f*ck off.

might as well settle this with a ruler...

I'm not asking for a seminal thought never before contrived by a living organism in the history of the university. The next persons to comment was plenty original. I was just saying this little gag has run it's course, and i don't think you are original. I love how you looked up a C.S lewis and then called my post elitist 'diatribe' (i dont think i have ever seen that word before in my life). Also 'trite'?

...4.6''
  • 1 0
It's somewhat amusing that you can use the word 'seminal' correctly and can string together a (quite flowing) paragraph as in your original comment, yet have never heard of the words 'trite' or 'diatribe'. Pocket dictionary, buddy: live it and love it.

I didn't know this was a running gag. This probably comes down to the fact that I don't frivolously spend my time trawling the internet tallying how many times someone has said 'x'. You must have a real difficult time whenever you open your browser of choice; seeing tired memes, viral videos and sassy overplayed one-liners everywhere you look. Do you call them all out? No, don't answer that, because I'd like you comply with my previous request: f*ck off.

these comments are all funny and good, but I'm kind of getting tired of the mock-nature-show comment. it just seems way overused.

 Norbs got robbed!

 Omg hahaha

always a prop for that comment!

Can I pump the EVOC Protector Vest with air to make my boobs bigger?

  • 81 6
 worst sequence ever
  • 9 0
 I second that lol
  • 10 1
I wouldn't say the worst sequence ever. I would say it is a sequence that everyone can do.
  • 9 0
So there I was, waiting for something exciting to happen...
  • 2 0
and then, out of the blue (shirt), his boobs started to get bigger!
  • 2 0
With every frame I was waiting for him to eat it, but alas, it never happened.
  • 59 2
This is probably the first sequence where i can say: "oh yes i can do this too"
  • 24 0
That Evoc vest looks like a Trek
  • 1 0
 haha good one!
  • 18 1
Not shure why this random pedaling is in sequence saturday.
  • 1 0
 I agree!
  • 20 4
 Thats a fuckin stupid vest.
  • 4 3
 Nope
  • 10 2
 yep
  • 4 2
It would be great for abrasion protection if you fell off your bike and were sliding on your chest on a gravel road (never happens), but it wouldn't be very helpful in protecting over the bars crashes where you might break your collarbone, tear your AC joint, or dislocate your shoulder (happens all the time).

Actually, it looks like it's for protection from moto-roost. Great.
  • 9 1
i've gone over the bars more times than i've gotten laid. and i've never dislocated my shoulder. you must be doing something weird. xan-man
  • 4 0
Well it would keep all the important bits of you in one place if you had a very, very bad crash...
  • 1 0
 made for Batman

I think its pretty cool to see a sequence of someone going hard, having fun on their bike without doing some insane that not a lot of people can do. I guess I don't see why it has to be something mind blowing in order for to be a cool photography sequence. I think that this kind of shows how people are getting used to seeing mountain bikers do crazy jumps etc... but is that really what everyone is able to do or does?

P.S. I want to win this contest for my boyfriend so he can have that vest and do those jumps you all wanna see without getting some gnarly road rash. Smile

My wife says I leave a cloud of dust around the house, and it looks pretty cool. Don't mind me, I just had 3 wisdom teeth pulled and am dumb with pain.....and that oh. So familiar taste of blood in the mouth... Mouth pain sucks, an evoc protector vest would so make it better.
  • 2 1
Grey Squirel to woodchuck....Grey Squirel to woodchuck...come in woodchuck....ccchhhh. This is woodchuck, i read you loud and clear...over.... The Alien veristers are on my tail, I'm comin in hot and need a diversion over...cccchhhhh. Grey Squirel out....

Clipped in,Dialed in and Droppin in! Kirt is just stompin this section of uphill trail! He's super focused as he sets up what appears to be downhill section just railin the corner! He's pushin his bike so hard it's all over the place but his head and focus never move. His stare is straight ahead as he owns this trail!
  • 9 8
While he is pedaling aggressively down the trail, I am surprised that a photographer with this much action sports photography experience would think that the rider pedaling down the relatively smooth trail was "destroying it"
  • 3 1
yes however look at the final shot...he's railing the hell out of that corner.....and it looks dry as hell so it's probably not in the most tacky state right now
  • 4 0
You have never gone really fast down a smooth, dusty trail, have ya?
  • 2 0
It sure looks like he's going up to me. And at 11 fps he goes that far in 2 seconds, yes he is destroying that trail, going up.
  • 2 0
 11fps eh. spot on beava
  • 2 0
It's pretty easy to ride fast in Bend.
  • 2 1
bobish- that's not the point. Try riding fast IN a bend, a flat one on a dusty day... see how that goes for you.
  • 3 0
What you don't see is the angry guy in the pickup with they shotgun who comes over the hill next. Voreis successfully escapes another shotgun wedding.
  • 1 0
Kirt Voreis bent this section of trail over flying around the bend in Bend Oregon. His knees and elbows are bent perfectly looking like there is a bend in gravity and time. I would bend over backwards for that style!
  • 1 0
Because this sequence can be done by everyone here... so everyone know how awesome riding for fun in,welll... simple but great lines like these are, is! Ride a lot, folks... not everything has to be impossible!
  • 4 0
i'm on camera? .... better put some STEEZ in my flat ground pedaling
  • 4 0
From frame 21 to 22 I think they missed a couple of frames
  • 3 3
Nope, you need to read the blurb before the sequence that's all.
  • 4 0
 That's the joooke.
  • 2 0
Oh I just like to look at the pictures XD
  • 2 0
With the Po Po at my back and dust on my trail...I sure wish that I had a bullet proof EVOC Protector Vest to save me. Note...it'll need to be as light as Air
  • 4 0
Ranger danger!! Ranger danger!! Let's get the #%&$ outta here!!
  • 4 1
IAN HYLANDS IS AWESOME AND EVOC IS THE BEST COMPANY EVER! Now that is a good comment.
  • 2 0
Even at 290 frames per second on Hylands' new 29er camera (obviously the fastest camera around), Voreis is moving too fast to capture smoothly on film!
  • 3 0
Wow. So rad you know... I almost fell asleep on frame 19... or was it on the 20th?
  • 2 0
Actually shooting the sequence to find the best spot is a great tip. I hadn't really thought of it before. I'm going to try it today. Thanks!
  • 2 0
I should be a bike model. I have an uncanny ability to ride really slooooooow but look like I am riding really fast. 11 fps unnecessary.
  • 3 3
 PLEASE DON'T LET THIS WIN

"*As narrated by David Attenborough*
The elusive, agile and protein-concerned blue-breasted Cross-Country Rider, as captured here by Ian Hylands, attempts to try and lure the opposite sex in with lavish displays of flat-land speed and flair; Only a Rider with sufficient lateral bar movement and dust plumage will be mating this season."
  • 2 0
The story continues behind the lens .. "Ian, sorry, I need a little break after that, was close to puke myself"
  • 1 0
Don't think I will win a bean for this and may get some hating on me but this just looks like a video with a very low FPS rate!
  • 4 0
 What the **** was that!?
  • 3 0
 This is why I don't ride 29".
  • 1 0
I actually like this, not because of some awesome trick, but because of how simple and raw this is... just a guy having a blast and earning some turns.
  • 2 0
when every trail feels like mount 7, because of the speed every bump feels huge
  • 5 1
 Run Forest! Run!
  • 2 0
Wasn't a big fan of that one. Thought he was going to do a huge air or something cool like that.
  • 1 0
He is in a hurry and extremely excited to get this little uphill transition over with because the 10 mile DH is within sight.
  • 2 0
"Holy shit those wasps are pissed off - Oh great a flat section, peddle you son of a bitch, peddle!"
