Red Bull Trail Building Challenge Opens Silver Star's Mountain Bike Park on June 23

On June 23, Silver Star Mountain Resort kicks off its mountain biking season with the most unique trail building concept in North America. As the final snow melts off the runs, the Red Bull Trail Building Challenge is already under way. Three teams, each consisting of ten riders and trail builders, have been assigned sections of Silver Star's Double Dog trail. In the three weekends prior to Silver Star Bike Park's official opening on June 23, these teams will be building wooden features that will enhance the rideability and flow of the trail. Skinnies, teeters, wall rides – it's all up to each team to use their imagination (and building materials) to create the best features.Red Bull's Scott Jewett says, "the involvement of local bike shops was crucial in finding the top local trail builder and building a team around this individual. These days, almost every town in BC has one or two guys who donate countless hours of their time and money to build trails for everyone’s enjoyment. Red Bull along with the shop owners identified these individuals and the crews starting coming together."

Each trail crews consist of a crew leader, five builders/workers and a selection of four riders on each team to 'test' the features as they are constructed. The three trail crews are represented by Brian Hammond (Olympia Cycle, Vernon), Ryan McKenna, (Gerick Cycle, Kelowna), and Cam Sorensen (Silver Star Mountain Resort). These three teams will be working hard to try and out-build each other and claim the overall "Trail Crew" project prize.

On June 23, RED BULL team riders Shaums March and Robbie Bourdon (and several other top pros) will ride Double Dog and announce the 'winner' of the Red Bull Trail Building Challenge.

Rick Harman of the Silver Star Bike Park says that "our trail crew is also working to buff out all of the sections between the features to ensure that we create the fastest, smoothest, best flowing trail out there. After the pros choose their favourites, Double Dog will then be opened to recreational riders for testing as well – grab a Red Bull and join in the fun!

At this time, Silver Star staff would like to encourage riders to buy their Silver Star Bike Park passes ON-LINE, to avoid long line-ups and congestion on the Opening Day and Canada Day long weekend.

Damn, if someone payed for a plane ticket for me to get to silverstar from ontario I'd build the whole trail myself. Who cares if theres no prize! I would consider it an honour to build a sweet dh trail at silver star. I agree with those who don't care about no getting a prize. Building a gnar trail with a bunch of riders is almost half the fun of biking. The least you can do is not complain about no prize. At least their allowed to build trails. In southern ontario we can't build anything without getting chased by cops 24/7. Keep on building and as soon as i'm done grade twelve I'm moving out west to get i on the action. Meanwhile just keeping having fun riding and building. YOU GUYS AT SILVERSTAR ARE THE LUCKIEST RIDERS ON EARTH!

These guys and a few other around build on their OWN time and spend their own MONEY for gas, nails, materials etc. most other weekends. Having the hill supply everything is dope but they aint getting a free pass by any stretch. The Man hours alone is worth more than the seasons. They are doing it for love of the sport. And they are NOT pros.

The team that wins gets free seasons passes though.. although the real reward is building something dope that people will respect and enjoy riding.

It's funny how every one here is wrong. There are prizes for the team riders and prizes for the winning builders. None of the prizes are well defined. Especially the season passes. Trust me I've been bitching about that. SilverStar is definitely getting a sweet deal by getting all us local pro builders up there build stunts for them. If RedBull wasn't paying for all expenses, I'm sure none of us would be doing this.

To all those kids who think that just building at SilverStar is cool enough.... try building trails for the public for 6 years, you'll learn quick that there is no love or glory for the local trail builder. Just being broke and no spare time (and a little gratitude when someone tells you your trail is rad)

Besides all that, this is still a cool contest!

lol so basically its a big contest to build the best trail, and whoever wins? just wins? wtf theres no prize? theres no sick bike to be won? or a toyota? someone asked me to build trails for there hill for a contest with no prize, sorry no matter how much i like biking and building to hell withthat, those guys are working they're ass's off for no prize,. . . .. . . . im sure being the first to ride they're first trails would be prize enough but c'mon

They aren;t all building new trails, they are building sections to the existing trail Double Dog. There is a sense of pride in competing against yoru peers in a contest like this and I believe that all these builders will make features that we'll all be stoked to ride.

Just so you know the winners get free seasons passes and are going to be able to ride a trail and be like "I built that!"

It's called giving back to the sport and going above and beyond to make the hill rock. That way, everyone wins.

The whole "what's in it for me" attitude blows, and has no place in this sport.....

I'm sure that once the hill opens up, you'll start to see more trail reports coming in and more general info will be circulating by then too.
