Five Women, No kids and No Husbands....Ready to Rock!

We set out for a weekend that was to be all about us and taking the opportunity to challenge ourselves on a women-only riding adventure – somewhat of a rare opportunity given life’s many other responsibilities. We set out for Silver Star Mountain in Vernon, B.C.Initially, we were expecting “just to ride.” Instead, we were rewarded with a weekend of riding that was fast, exciting, thrilling and challenging. We were able to test our limits and each other, instead of the usual riding in which we too often find ourselves “just trying to keep up” with the guys. Over two days, each one of us improved our riding ability, caught bigger air, jumped higher jumps, and handed ourselves numerous self-hi 5s!

Silver Star has an excellent selection of well-maintained trails for all abilities. Superstar is fast and flowing. It has great beginner jumps and table-tops that are well-flagged for a heads up of what's to come. World Cup is more challenging with bigger jumps (and easy ways out if needed), drops, and two wall rides. Rock Star is modelled after Whistler’s A-Line with bigger table-tops, berms, and jumps than most of Silver Star’s other runs. Double Dog is a fast, technical run with lots of woodwork. We spent some time at the Bike Park as well where we practiced our technical and jumping skills.

Some of Silver Star’s drawing features include a six seater chair for the girls to hang together on the way up, bike carriers after every other chair to reduce line up wait-time, well-maintained trails that obviously have had a lot of energy invested in them, and kid-friendly attractions in the village so that the kids can stay entertained while parents trade off.

Over two days, each one of us improved our riding ability, caught bigger air, jumped higher jumps, and handed ourselves numerous self-hi 5s!

We were fortunate enough to have perfect riding weather and escape the 40ish degree temperatures in the valley. We experienced only one mechanical on the weekend - a flat tire. While our damsel in distress was receiving assistance from the mountain crew, a group of male riders passed through, wished us a good ride, and were overheard saying as they departed, “Those girls can really ride!” As it turned out, we were not only impressing ourselves.

We were really impressed by what Silver Star had to offer our group of female riders. It will definitely become an annual trip!
