First Look: Specialized Unveils a New Short Travel Special - Sea Otter 2013

Specialized Enduro SX

Short Travel Racer

Specialized's SX moniker has been attached to a number of different platforms over the years, from their 170 and 180mm SX Trail bikes to the much rarer SX Slalom that sported just 100mm of travel for its gated racing intentions. The latter bike had quite a cult following, with its prowess on the race track transferring over to a hell of a good time on flowy trails, especially by riders who could maximize its nimble personality. 2013 sees the Morgan Hill company revisit that concept, with them manufacturing a very limited, 100 unit production run of the new 100mm travel Enduro SX frame shown here. Specialized plans to offer the SX Enduro as a frame only, with it being available in stores this coming May. Pricing has yet be announced.

Specialized's factory racers, Aaron Gwin, Troy Brosnan, and Mitch Ropelato, as well as their USA Gravity team, will likely be aboard the new bike for the upcoming Sea Otter dual slalom, and there is a good chance that we might see the bike on the downhill track as well.

Specialized Enduro SX

Revised FSR Suspension

Not surprisingly, the Enduro SX utilizes the FSR suspension that is found on all of Specialized's high-end full suspension bikes. In fact, the chain and seat stays, as well as the rocker link arrangement, are all borrowed from the longer travel Enduro platform, with Specialized employing a shorter stroke FOX Float CTD shock and tweaking the kinematics to better suit the bike's race intentions. The result of this treatment is a suspension layout that, according to Specialized, excels at sprinting and high-speed jumping. Jason Chamberlain, the Specialized engineer behind the
new bike, told us that the modified FSR suspension's lower leverage also allows for a larger setup range without requiring the exceedingly high shock pressures that racers often prefer. Basically, a rider could still pump 300psi into the shock for a seriously stiff setup, but the new SX will also allow for lower, more usable pressures. This is in contrast to the slopestyle focused P.Slope, debuted at Crankworx last year that uses a rear suspension layout designed to handle the enormous impacts of a slopestyle course and high rear shock pressures.

Specialized Enduro SX

Race Focused Geometry

While there will be riders who have a blast on the new Enduro SX on their local trails, this is one short travel rig that is intended to be used as an out and out gated racer (there isn't even provision for a front derailleur). To that end, Specialized has gone with a relatively low 311mm bottom bracket height that should allow the little bike to slice and dice the corners like Slap Chop on wheels. Out back, the standard Enduro chain and seat stays make for a long rear end to aid in high-speed stability, with a 68° head angle up front employed for the same reason. If you're thinking that the Enduro SX would make for a great dirt jump rig, hold those thoughts: the P.Slope employs a higher bottom bracket, shorter rear end, and a steep head angle better suited for tricks. That's not to say that we don't expect to see riders sessioning jumps on the SX, but that dedicated jumpers would be far better served on the 87mm travel P.Slope.

Freaking sweet! Yet another banger from Specialized, I don't think it's that bold statement to say that these guys are really in the forefront at the moment and they have taken some good lead. Can you guys at Spesh just make the similar bike with steeper seat angle, longer seat and top tube? Or I have to make one myself as there is nothing like that on the market? Enduro Trail Evo? And 419 CS - come on, if you made it with Enduro 29 at 430mm, this one should be at 400mm! Big Grin

Oh, and please stop excusing for lack of front mech. Nobody needs it.
  • 9 3
Funny cause I literally, bought an SX enduro frame yesterday, but an older model with the same color scheme I'll be seeing and testing this bike hopefully at the sea otter. No regrets, I'm glad I got my bike, but I think it's just funny aha
  • 10 4
AH mate, it's not that big difference, I'm sure. They've just simplified it. I liked the old one´s "expressionistic" form. they were looking shit back in 2008 and 2009 when they were really wild in form with fugly, crazy graphics. It was just too much going on in one package. But that red 2011 model with flames - awesome!

I know... they could make a Stumpjumper SX Big Grin something between this and Stumpy Evo. A capable jumper and pumper than can still rock the woods and allow you to rest your butt for a moment on a 2h ride.

This "it looks like an _____" business is so stupid. it looks like a session obviously.
  • 63 6
One simply does not look like a Session in Mordor, where 29ers are gay and 650B is yet another new standard. Only 3% of people can use new Session. f*ck UCI. 9sp for life, been using it for 10 years and it has never let me down. That shit was so gnarly, Cam is the man. Healing vibes to him, thanks for pushing boundaries of our sport, come back strong. Carbon fiber has tensile strength of something, something, and can be more robust than any aluminum frame, even though I don't trust carbon. I think Sam made a wrong move and should have stayed in Specialized.

Did I forget anything? Trollolololo lo lolo lo lolo lo lolololo looooooo

Holy fuggin drool bike that thing looks awesome. FSR POWER!!!!! Gwin made a real good choice moving to spec. The amount of shred that bike is capable of is unimaginable. Hell you could own a xc track with that bike then jump a tight set of dubs. Me want one or two.

Absolutely sick bike. I'm already thinking: Pike, flow, xt trail, minion and highroller.

What id like to know is if I would be able to get the seat high enough with a reverb for comfortable seated climbing. I've got some local tracks that this bike would be ridiculous fun on.
  • 1 0
Pike would be a bit much travel no? It's 140-160mm, this looks like 100mm.
  • 1 0
Take the front to 140 and slack it out to 67ish, would raise BB a bit as well. Would make the most killer 'fun' trail bike ever.
  • 1 0
I thought that the fork on it looked like 120mm travel. They say 68degrees but don't say what fork that's with.

  • 1 0
Has anyone ridden this frame since and got any reviews on it?
Any opinion on how a setup with the 100mm rear and rockshox Pike 150mm up front would work?
Would this setup be a good bike for UK trail centres and how versatile to cover trail/longer xc/enduro type riding?
Will it be good enough for climbs?
cheers.

  • 1 0
The P.slope will be the bike of choice for slopestyle events.
  • 1 0
Well do I get one of these to replace my Specialized Pitch Frame, or a Kona Carbon Operator to replace my Entourage? Such awesome bikes.
Even though I prefer a shorter back end and a slacker HA, I do absolutely love this bike.
  • 1 0
While it is a good looking bike, i wouldn't consider this as being super innovative - the way we are all reacting to it and its being touted. for years companies have been making short travel bikes that are well suited for slalom. i'm not going to get into the "this bike looks like that bike" game, but just a few examples which are aesthetically and technologically equal or better: Tazer fs, Tazer vp/vp2, Blur 4X, Foes Zigzag, Yeti 4X
  • 3 0
Why another "new" SX ... ?
The old ones where fantastic ...
"never change a winning team"
  • 3 0
This version is lighter and has a more focused geometry and leverage ratio for gated racing.
  • 1 0
I can see that this version is lighter, around 2 lbs if the sicklines scale is right, and im not gonna argue with the leverage ratio being different. But the 'important' geometry looks identical. Chainstay length, bb height, reach and head angle are all the same between this and the 2010 model that i own. There are some differences in seatube length, angle and standover; things that don't 'really' affect how the bikes rides when you are using it for its intended purpose. The wheelbase is also strangely shorter on the new model as well even with the same chainstay length, headangle, and reach. How did the wheelbase change if those three angles have remained the same? Just asking out of interest because i love the way my current bike rides, but would love it even more if it was 2lbs lighter and pedalled better due to suspension refinements Big Grin .
  • 1 0
Almost 3kg for a long frame with shock and seatpost clamp is not really that light, I had hoped for a bit less..

Looks sweet, I want one, along with a sticker that covers the word "enduro". Nothing enduro about this sweet-ass sled.
  • 2 1
"Not surprisingly, the Enduro SX utilizes the FSR suspension" It's a bit surprising, seeing as the proto was a faux bar not Horst Link. Glad they used their signature Horst Link.
  • 1 0
Faux bar proto? I am not familiar with that one.
  • 1 0
I'm sure I saw photos at least a couple of months back of a Specialized slope stylee bike with solid swingarm(no pivot between main pivot and rear axle). I was quite surprized, hence why I remember. Any find a photo of it?
  • 1 0
Are you referring to the P.slope by chance? It's a slopestyle specific concentric BB design for running single speed and super stiff suspension.
  • 1 0
Yeah, I'd say that'd be it. Makes sense now, didn't recall/realize it was single speed. Glad to see that's the only reason specy ditched the Horst/FSR linkage. Concentric is fine for smooth tracks with just jumps, not much else IMO.
  • 1 0
Mind you, with the Horst link where it is on that bike, it would make for similar axle path to the single swing-arm bike anyway, with just different braking characteristics.
  • 1 0
Both the braking and pedaling characteristics are improved on a linkage bike over a single pivot. The wheel paths may be similar, but the forces are decoupled from the front triangle on a linkage bike, which allows better management of chain forces as well as braking forces.
  • 1 0
I'm not sure how you define better, but some people prefer the feel of single pivots. The brake squat, and the pedalling can also be set up neutral or not. Yes it's easier for a manufacturer to get what they want from a single pivot. But that's what they want. I'm not saying one is better than the other. Specialized have made their FSR linkage very single pivot like with this bike it appears.
  • 1 0
Braking independence is impossible with a single pivot, unless you have a floating brake set-up. A linkage bike is also more independent or dependent or neutral - however you want it - over a wider range of gears. A single pivot response is optimal over a narrow range of gears. You simply cannot tune a single pivot the same as a linkage bike. It's physics.
  • 1 0
looks a lot lighter that the sx. but i'm not sure it will have the same cornering abilities etc, as the sx. personally i think the shock is too high in the frame. its going to feel like a trail bike.
  • 1 0
didnt specialized come out with a short travel bike last year before sea otter that was spec'd around pumptracks? This seems similar, pretty awesome and yeah I want one but if anyone remembers that let me know
  • 3 1
Is this simialr to a P slope? or more of a race bike then for DJ and slopestyle?
  • 1 0
it says there, that it is quite the contrast to P Slope, as "the new SX will also allow for lower, more usable pressures", than required to run P Slope's suspension right.

btw, i am not the one who neg-propped you Big Grin
  • 2 0
haha its all good I didnt read the last part of the article cheers
  • 1 0
That was kind of a problem with the last SX. My friend has one he weighs less than 150lbs and was runnning like 250 psi in the shock. I know when the p slpope came out they were claiming you could put 160 psi in the shock and it would run ultra stiff like you want these short travel bikes to, Im sure they worked that out with this bike too.

That would make it one bike for EVERYTHING (like a new Scott Voltage)!
  • 2 4
Is that a small amount for such a niche product? I can't really see them gone in a day
  • 3 2
It's what I would do if I were specialized. Just test it...see how it goes. Make it limited so that people have more incentive to buy...it's a smart move. Low risk/high potential/and probably pretty big turnover

Don't let the stated purpose for the bike fool you. The last SX was built as a narrow-purpose bike, too, and it is one the funnest bikes I've ever ridden. It's awesome on flowy trails, loves to jump, and is a rock-solid mini park bike. Given the engineer behind this bike and the riders it was designed for, I'm sure this version will be just as fun.

forums.mtbr.com/attachments/commencal/521886d1266598083-absolut-sx-3_4view_web.jpg

and it works extremely well. Large bearings, no chain shortening, stiff frame, no proprietary rear shocks, light.

What do I get from Spec-ed? Halfassed DJ that cannot run Singlespeed and convert to derailleur and seriously limited shock choice. A dumbed down product - as usual.
  • 2 0
Actually, when I think of the well thought out originals, I think of these -

gp1.pinkbike.org/p4pb3132519/p4pb3132519.jpg;

www.sicklines.com/gallery/data/534/medium/SX_Frame.jpg; and

www.specialized.com/OA_MEDIA/2003/bikes/03EnduroSXFrame_d.jpg.

I can't wait to see this new SX in action and ride it. I have a 2011 SX, and it's the kind of bike that makes you look for reasons to ride. It's solid, fast, and loves berms and jumps. If these bikes fall into your "dumbed down product - as usual" category, then we should all tell Specialized to dumb-down their products as much as possible.
  • 1 1
Speced is into meaningless sculpting, its called styling where design is detrimental to function and serves the purpose of making things visually last 1 season only. Sort of what Caddy did in the 50ies. That is why they ding and bend easely. Spec`ed grabs ready made tube catalog from Astro and just recombines what`s available. So yes dumbed down it is.
  • 1 0
So am I to understand that you have seen bikes that ding and bend easily and have only lasted one season? I'd be curious to see those frames.

Every tube on every Specialized is 100% designed and engineered by us.
  • 1 0
I'll take it. This looks perfect for most of the riding that I do. I'd probably have to move all my landings back a few feet tho if it jumps as well as it looks like it does.
