Fourcross Alliance speaks out.

Fourcross Alliance Press Release for Immediate Distribution

The Fourcross Alliance are as stunned and surprised as the majority of people out there at the UCI's decision to remove 4X from the Mountain Bike World Cup Series in 2012. The discipline that has provided so much entertainment during the 2011 Mountain Bike Series seemed to have secured it's future with the UCI after what will be remembered as the finest, most unpredictable race series ever seen.

This decision to simply remove the discipline with no warning to riders, teams, federations or organizers, with a complete disregard to any contracts that are currently in place is probably the point that we are most annoyed about. There are teams and riders out there who have contracts which will run through 2012 to race World Cup 4X. We definitely feel that some better consultation and warning would have been an appropriate move from UCI.

We really feel sorry for the World Cup organizers who have successfully won their bids and have contracts in place for the 2012 Mountain Bike World Cup season which was due to include 4X.

Although we see this decision as being entirely the wrong one from the UCI and it's management committee, the Fourcross Alliance now see this as an opportunity to help develop the sport to it's full potential by creating a new 4X World Series.

After what has been a very successful 2011 season for 4X, the sport has continued to grow and showcase 4X as being one of the most exciting cycling disciplines the UCI have ever created. To end the sport now we feel is a mistake and it is vital to the continued development of the sport that 4X remains on the World stage.

We have had nothing but words of support for 4X in the last 24 hours and we anticipate many more opinions to be voiced in the coming days.

All the positive comments for 4X that have been written on the Internet from people all over the world have only fueled our passion and devotion to make the new World 4x Series a success.

The Fourcross Alliance plan to work with the UCI, where possible, to create a new an exciting future for the sport of 4X.

The plans are already starting to take shape in the very short time period we have had to work on creating a new 4X World Series.

We have to get contracts in place before we start to publish details of the new 4X World Series but what we would like to say to all riders is continue to finalize your sponsorship deals for 2012 with the knowledge that we are working on creating a new 4X World Series for 2012 and beyond.

We would like to thank everyone for there messages & emails of support.

A full statement will be issued in due course.

Sounds like this could turn into the best thing that has happened to 4x, im sure the 4x alliance will do a much better job than UCI!

This is beautiful to say the least. Every discipline should be run and organized by riders who take part in that discipline and 100% support it. Why would some roadies be running the DH program? It makes no sense to me. Just like this Fourcross Alliance, something should be created for downhill (and other forms of bigger mountain riding). Perhaps even join DH and fourcross under one group! Although these are two separate disciplines, at least these people aren't jerks and understand each other better than some roadie deciding that fourcross looks dumb and has to go.

DH and fourcross needs to have their own separate community where people understand each other and can work together. A community with 100% positive internal relations that can lead to nothing but beneficial and effective development of our sport- no conflict of interest here.

I've never read a less professional sounding statement from a special interest group in my entire life lol

Also, way to puss out Fourcross Alliance, the UCI cuts off your sport and you're just "annoyed?" Then you say you're going to run back to their protective arms since apparently you can't organize anything by yourself? You sound like a bunch of pushovers...
  • 25 0
No, actually. Read it again, they are not running back to anybody. The statement here is saying that the Fourcross Alliance is going to do their own Worlds series.

Eh runner, I donno about you, but the UCI has such a massive history in cycling, it'd be a shame to lose out on their traditions like the jersey's for overall and champs etc, I think that is why they want to work with UCI.
  • 12 0
They're also building themselves a massive history of being absolute James Blunts in MTBing...

I'm sure with time they could come up with jerseys/titles etc. that were held in the same esteem.

I have never been riding 4X, but I will never quit watching 4X, as it is one of the best mtb disciplines! Maybe they want us all to become XC fags.

it should not matter under which umbrella (Alliance, UCI or other) the DH and 4X racers are united, there will always a World Championship at the end of the season....World Cup races do not need to be governed and limited by the UCI....if the the DH community does not look seriously into creating a serious alliance soon, it will not take long before those sad news apply to them too !!!...and the TV rights !!!!...this is really starting to look like F1 where everyone and everything is owned by one dictator !!!
  • 6 2
I say everyone f*ck the UCI for all disciplines of riding, except XC and road riding, and each discipline of riding create their own world series. Less fees, and NO RULE BOOK! Smile
  • 6 0
props to them for standing up to the evil UCI what would be cool though is 4X format downhill
  • 5 2
That would be insane...MX style start, funneling into a typical singletrack DH course.
  • 5 0
Then there'd be even less overtaking Razz
  • 1 0
there is xD it's called DHM (down hill marathon) the last race i did in that disclipline, 70 riders were all starting at the same time, it's quite fun beacause you are id direct competition
  • 6 0
DH should do the same thing so we get rid off the cunts at UCI..
  • 1 0
^^ agree! CMON 4X alliance show the evil UCI axis what the riders want, build it and they will come!
  • 1 0
If you had the 4X format on the dh track but the tracks were also a bit wider and had multiple lines and jumps along one another it woudld be sick
  • 2 0
The UCI is milk turned bad. Change is good Smile go for it.

I had bladdy good warm vibes from reading all of this, plus the comments. For once it seems like we're all on the same wavelength regarding the UCI that have gona absolutely f'ing barking mad! All they've done is take take take and ruin things for out sport without any real logical explanation other than to fill their own damn filthy pockets. They drive out Freecaster, gay leader jersey's, ban helmet cams, media blackouts, kill off 4X from the program, they just keep getting worse and worse!!! Its my dream that DH will break away from UCI as well. It has to happen and I believe it will happen. If anybody is on FB then get yourself on this group - facebook.com/BreakawayfromtheUCI
Gather the troops, spread the word, lets show some force. 4X and DH forever!!

...from being freaked out a few days ago about all that UCI bullcrap, I have to say that the future of Gravity racing looks brighter and is in good hands with those young european entrepreneurs...it's just great business for our sport to brake away from the UCI clutch....leave the drug scandals, the pay TV, spandex and internal divisions to the UCI .......
  • 25 0
a separate 4X world series would be great, now the tracks won't be limited to where the downhill world cups, ect. are; and can then go to new places with amazing tracks that aren't used to their potential.
still, stupid move UCI.
i would like to hear more on their reasoning.
  • 1 0
If they have different venues though it does make it tricky for riders that want to race both dh and 4x plus for the factory teams as they will be split up. But i do see your point Wink
  • 2 0
I think that will only be a problem for some teams and riders, since most DH teams are strictly DH, and most 4X teams are strictly 4X.
  • 13 0
What they need to do is run the seasons at different times. You dont need as big of mountains to run 4x so in the US for sure you could have the 4x season in the winter down south and the DH in the summer as it is. Then you could have all the top DH riders that want to race 4x race and not worry about getting recked for the DH race that would be the following morning and visa versa. You would allow all the top MTB athletes to compete in both aspects if they wanted to!
  • 1 0
 ^ i like your thinking
  • 2 0
I so desperately hope this means 4X tracks will become proper mountain bike tracks instead of downhill BMX tracks, massive support for 4X Alliance!
  • 21 0
if DH also broke away from UCI this would be amazing, i personally (as a spectator) would love nothing more than to see more events appear on the calendar. And if it means braking away from UCI its defo the right move
  • 6 0
It would be awesome if DH would break away with 4X and create their own alliance. Roadies, XC riders and their supporters are not qualified to make the best decisions for 4X and DH racing. Although 4X is clearly way different than DH, it takes a similar skillset and mindset to appreciate both disciplines to their fullest.
  • 6 2
Yeh more events on the calender would be great to see no doubt.

UCI are sending themselves into bankruptcy with the decisions they have been making lately.(ROCKY ROADS,PULLING 4X)

Im not comparing DH to football but if there were a couple of big major leagues in DH like football it would be great and maybe the world cup only happens every 2 years.

DH only has about 2 major leagues that attract alot of attention from riders around the world, The IXS and the UCI WC.

And on another note FOOTBALL SUCKS
  • 2 2
dude, just for that football sucks note, i salute you Salute

I really hope Scott and Chris can pull this off. It's only a couple of weeks since the internet was full of calls for a breakaway DH 'World Series', and it's actually happening in 4X.

Could this be the beginning of the end for the UCI in gravity mountain biking? Freeride and now 4X are already independant, we just need DH to follow!
  • 10 0
Come on DH teams, sponsors and riders, man up and tell the UCI where to get off...this press release should read...'Four Cross, Downhill and Freeride Alliance speaks out'....come on, you know it makes sense...
  • 2 1
yer, they should make into a "Gravity Alliance"

I loved watching the fourcross! That is the crappiest thing for UCI to do. Props and full support to the Fourcross Alliance. I think that it is perfect what they are doing. I wish that there was something that I could do to help it. I am a graphic designer and would be more then happy to help if ever needed. Good luck Fourcross Alliance!

A break from the UCI is just what 4X needs. People who race and love the sport will do wonders as a governing body, and the sport will flourish as an independent World Series, as I feel it has been a little overshadowed by the downhill WC. It has always seemed a sort of secondary event to the downhill, which is a shame, this will be much better.
  • 5 0
wont be long before they drop DH too, after bring Rocky Roads (XC and Road lovers) i envisaged this sort of shit coming.

they try charge massive amounts of money to film DH events, bike companies/teams need to get on board and start a new series!

its been done before, and for 4X they need to get Cedric Gracia to head up next years race organisation because he knows good 4X ! Smile
  • 4 0
4x is a spectator sport and brings support, sponsors, media and funding to the world cup venues. And don't forget that it brings future riders to the sport because they're parents came out to watch that weekend. Not everyone can spend hours hiking the dh track. It's a bad move on UCI's behalf and their reasoning behind it is pathetic.
  • 5 1
YEES!! Thanks god there are some out there that take up the task!! Awesome!! I wish you the best and I guess it will be really a development for the 4X Sport. It is a good step if we move away from the UCI, in my eyes they only support what brings money, thus the only do Lycra-Doped Tour de France. If you can find a way for 4X, perhaps one day the same will be for Downhill. I hope the 4X courses will change more into mountainbike again, as it already began this season. We need to go away from BMX-Alike courses, perhaps move into a category that justifies fullies with travel around 140mm. Could be a nice point for sponsors too, to market their enduro/Am segment.

All the best wishes, ROCK IT!!
  • 4 1
Not communicating this decision to everyone involved shows a complete lack of professionalism and respect on the UCI's behalf. 4x is an awesome event to watch and is definitely a fan favorite. Would be really disappointing if a 4x world series is not held. That is a great response from the Fourcross Alliance and it shows their commitment to building the sport as whole. Bring it to BC!
  • 1 2
Don't you have enough in BC?!
  • 9 0
Sorry to say but "Bring it to BC is not going to happen" What you need to do is create it in BC. Start a 4X organization, build a track in your city, and start a series. I'm sure with the number of people that travel out to Abbotsford to race indoor BMX in the winter there should be enough interest to run a small 4X series...

That's the way to get it started, and that's part of the reason it's where it is now. I remember after the World Cup at Grouse there was some talk of leaving the 4X track in place, but it didn't last long. Get your friends together, use Pinkbike to contact other interested riders in your city or town, and organize something if you want to race.
  • 2 0
i would just like to say , IanHylands i f*cking love you for that. ^
  • 3 0
Not an expert by any means but I see this as a great thing for 4X. Good things happen when people get held back or told no by others. I hope they take this FU and turn it around and make the UCI regret ever dropping 4X. Maybe it will be applauded by sponsors and there is a influx of new enthusiasim that wasnt there due to UCI being in charge. Eye of the Tiger time!

 right on !!!

I was looking forward to watching 4x at Windham WC this summer, especially since world cups haven't been to this side of the world for ages. Needless to say I was slightly disappointed that there was no 4x.
  • 4 0
Cause MSA and Bromont are in Europe...
  • 1 0
what ??? no world cup this side of the world for ages ??? maybe in the states where it seems impossible to built a decent 4X track but we've been rocking some of the best WCups and World Champs since the very beginning !!!
  • 2 0
my bad, I meant to say the states. Canada has been keeping the WC alive in North America
  • 2 0
I've been personally to both races at Windham, working with Pivot Cycles. I can tell one thing I've heard in the pits this year and from that I'm very surprised to see Windham hosting another race next year. It doesn't bring enough money to the organization to hold these events and because of that 4x didn't took place in Windham this year, simply... it costs way to much to build a course that as to be taken a part right after. I know it sucks, but it's how it is. If 4x wants to survive they will either need very good funding or permanent courses. My 2 cents
  • 1 0
I'm still surprised UCI allowed a WC DH race to take place there in the first place...but I probably should not be considering this nasty organization pro racing has to deal with...
  • 1 0
if Windham is such a bust, maybe UCI should move the event back to Bromont
  • 2 0
I feel I need to echo some of the other comments and sentiments above... I can't believe how unprofessionally this has been handled by the UCI. A governing body would not get away with this kind of shoddy behaviour in any other sport. If this was their mindset, these feelings should have been communicated to the teams, riders and sponsors many months in advance to allow any required constructive changes they feel necessary to be put in place to avoid this happening. To do it this way with little to no notice to both teams, riders and sponsors shows a total lack of respect from the UCI towards these people not to mention opening up potential legal implications! If as a governing body this is how the UCI acts, then it's probably a good thing for 4X to set up it's own series and I think it sends out a clear warning message to other cycling disciplines that this is the kind of treatment they can expect from the UCI in the future!
  • 4 0
this is good to see this happening,i just hope that DH will do the same one day
  • 2 0
It's not going to be enough to support this move by the 4x Alliance only in these forums. We have to step up, offer help and support to Scott and Chris and whoever else to make sure this is the BEST SERIES ever!
  • 1 0
personally I'm enjoyed uci 4x events. I'm sad to see them go and disappointed in the way the uci seems to be treating it athletes. For what its worth I support the FA in their running of a new 4x wc series. best of luck guys, may you turn this lemon into lemonade.
  • 1 0
I have to agree that the UCI has got this wrong as i have said in the first post if UCI's actions on the 4x. But i completely and whole haertly agree with FA's opinion on this matter! What ever comes of the idea of starting a 4x series away from UCI, I will fully support and race in the series!
  • 1 0
Awesome news, hope they can pull it off! It's sad to hear people who have been racing WC 4x talking about getting a job looking into DH because their sport just got squashed. Hope this can get sorted quick enough to secure peoples sponsorship for 2012. As people have said, better off to drop the UCI and get a world series ready now for when they screw downhill over too...
  • 2 1
UCI. utter cunting idiots. the uci has long history of doing what they will and be damned with who it affects. they love to change the rules to suit their outdated thoughts and not allow progression into the sport. me personally, I love old school style stuff but the UCI take the piss by continually outlawing anything that is new and exciting...from technology to riding styles. gravity led bike sports moving out of the jurisdiction of the UCI can only be a good thing. wish all the best to you 4x alliance
  • 2 1
Do you really need to insult females in general when expressing you discontentment about the UCI?
  • 1 3
Is pinkbike full of disrespectful injurious idiots?
  • 4 1
not wanting to detract from the main argument here, but me thinks it is you who is insulting females with your reply. you quite obviously associate that word directly with female anatomy.
nobody i know who uses that word is referring to females in general or particular. they use the word to vent some frustration. and depending on what part of scotland you come from (Fife in particular) the venacular ...."aye, he's a guid c*nt him! " is a compliment (although i'm sure its the only place in the world that uses the word "c*nt" in the positive)

but yes i could have racked my brains a bit more and come up witha better , PC friendly acronym for the UCI "Useless cycling imbeciles" or something else that didnt express my thoughts as well as i wanted
  • 1 4
Funny! It is so very amusing how, according to you, I am the one insulting females. That is just plain ludicrous. How many twists in you psychoanalysis did you need to do to come up with that one?
  • 3 1
lol no need to post twice!!. seems to me you are taking alot of umbrage regarding the use of this word. and so it obviously offends you, despite not being female!. so for you i wont use the word again. Judging by some of your other posts on this forum, you are quite an angry spiteful twit...who is possibly more offensive than the C word. this thread is for the nastiness of the UCI and their lack of curtesy surrounding the dismissal of 4X. the C word usually is used to describe people like that....not to describe female anatomy. your replies are not worth the curtesy of me replying to anymore so..... go have your politcally correct swear word analyis with someone who cares cock!
  • 1 4
You cunningly twist the truth to suit your personal interests however, I on the other hand act on merited principles. As to your reference to my unrelated posts on other topics, your superficial analysis is erroneous and I invite others to have a read and see for themselves and dig deeper while closely following the contextual thread. I speak out for clarity, fairness, ethics and what it means to be an ambassador for our fine sport among other things. If some one feels inclined to degrade with egregious words or actions I will counter it for my will is strong. In addition, I do not have a problem with swearing for I swear all the time in jest and in frustration, as many do too. Lastly, you are damn right I am angry, angry with the decay of our civility on this fine planet in general, as well as, on this trivial Pink Bike website.

I am not trying to be an enemy! I care about our quality of life and the mutual respect for all peoples! To all, Why is it that such a large percentage of the post on this website are uneducated piss takes, ethnic slurs, sexual insults, chauvinistic absurdities and personal attacks? Why? Currently we are lamentably portraying a terrible image of what it is to be foremost, citizens and then bikers.

All you right, can you guys take your silly argument about language somewhere else and stop filling up this post on the 4X Alliance and the UCI with unrelated comments. If you want to bitch at each other about stuff do it in messages or start a forum, please don't do it in the comments section.
  • 2 0
I dont understand why they would still want to work with the UCI. Im sure they dont need the UCIs help and after just dropping 4X for no real reason, I dont know why they would want it. This will be awesome if it works out.
  • 1 0
"The Fourcross Alliance are as stunned and surprised..."

As many people testified on the original thread - we heard about this half a year ago. There is no way Scott and Chris did not hear about this. The Fourcross Alliance should have hit the ground running with a 2012 series already organised on the sly. The best response would have been "UCI dumped us, so what. Here are the dates and venues of the 2012 series..."

4X was UCI's chance to get MTB onto punter's TV sets (easily covered by cameras), but it didn't happen. If Coke or someone huge was having it played on a Sunday afternoon in the USA, you can bet they would never have cancelled. You don't slaughter the cash cow.

Fear not fellow fourcross fans - the future us unknown. The phoenix may rise from the ashes.

Sorry to drag up an old comment, but i just noticed this on FB which proves your point:

Just to Confirm. 4X WILL HAPPEN at the World Cup and World Championships in 2011. A small group are pushing to remove 4X, but the rumours are NOT true.

That's best part of 12 months ago, the FourCross Alliance talking about the UCI pulling the plug on WC 4X! And now they say they're 'stunned and surprised'. Surely the industry insiders, and those with a vested interest in 4X, saw this coming a long time ago?
  • 1 0
UCI has always been pretty lame in my opinion. The fact that they backed some race series was nice to track results, but honestly, a facebook group or pinkbike forum could accomplish the same thing. 1. Write up some rules 2. Post the circuit 3. Post the results Other than that, everyone really needs to think about these orgs as self promoting and not client serving.
  • 3 2
4x had its chance. Its completely unacceptable how the uci handled this but it feels like its been a long time coming. For years and years the RIDERS complained about a lack of challenge to wc tracks and structure. It seemed good on paper. Jumps, speed, contact between riders. It felt like every race it was "the jumps are to small" theres no passing spots" blah blah. It had its shot. it was always the little sister to dh or bmx. If it was as good as everyone was saying it is, we wouldn't be discussing it. the sport never pushed the boundaries of riding. I love bikes. I've raced for over a decade. im not a hater. Just seeing the writing on the wall. Perhaps 4x needs this. come back in a few years. figure out the kinks and try again?
  • 1 0
If the UCI was so great fourcross wouldn't look like a bmx race with 26 inch wheels. The free ride world tour doesn't need them and nether does fourcross. Crankworks is one of if not the biggest mountain bike events every year and slopestyle is the only event that counts towords a world title. NASCAR doesn't organize off road races nether should cross country or road racers organize a fourcross, downhill, duel slalom, or bmx race let alone a series with world standings. I do agree it's nice to have similar events at the same venue but that should be up to the people representing those sports. There is a reason super bikes don't follow the same schedule as motocross they have separate events at separate places. Something that should be looked at is having one world race or event a year instead of having every rider travel all year for one title have different titles on different continents as in motocross the fastest guys will end up all in one series and represent there country at one event and maybe have it a team thing where fourcross, downhill, and duel slalom all have to have rider and which ever country does the best in all three wins there could even have bmx race too why not we all had one at one time. Anyway the UCI messed up fourcross long ago and now it can grow and be it's own agian

Wow the UCI really have their heads up too many asses. What a bunch of fanny bandits. Most companies are already marketing 4x bikes, components and have riders who focus on that style only. The 4x community will be better off without the uci bitchin about everything. Now they can build real beast tracks and show the world what 4x all about.

You are so very intelligent with your sexist insults! Take out your anger and frustration on RR and the UCi without insulting females and their sex organs. Here have a dose of your own medicine. I marvel at your prowess. You have only an exceptionally minute pencil dick for a brain. You can kiss my royal ass! You are the death of the beauty in this wonderful adventure we call biking while not forgetting you are part of the rupture of the beautiful and sensual interaction between male and female. Your actions are lowly disgusting.

I think slalom will come back eventually, it just makes more sense. Much simpler, less expensive, less crashes & injuries, and more fair because the fastest rider wins. I never viewed 4x as a legitimate mountain bike sport, it is more like bmx combined with roller derby. It was fun to watch sometimes, but the race was usually decided in the first 50 feet. it's also not a participant-friendly sport, only young guys race it for the most part. Slalom is much less intimidating and alot more people would get involved, which would grow the sport.

Slalom my ass - 13 men and 8 women competed at the US champs. Yeah right, that sounds like a much bigger and healthier sport than 4cross. For yer info: The UCI decided to eliminate the 2nd gravity sport from the calendar. No matter if that is dual or 4cross, they are both out. All those 4cross-haters that now feel they got it right are simply terribly wrong: They have lost just as much.

Less intimidating? Is that a synonym for "more boring"? Seriously, have a look at the worldcup's overall, it's not dirty t-boning riders in the top5, it's top dogs who do without unfair riding.

Most of the concerns of the UCI were not in the hand of either teams or riders - it was up to the venues to stop building 4cross courses from scratch for every single race, which is a waste of time, ressources and money. And it's stupid as well because you give away the chance of gradually improving a course based on competition experiences.

Im not a hater, I enjoyed watching 4X. I just think that slalom is more sustainable as a participant sport. Not many pros competed in the US championships but there were lots of masters and juniors that wouldn't have been there if it was 4X. I wou race slalom but would never race 4X. You are right though, it sucks to lose a gravity sport. maybe if it had been slalom all along it wouldn't have got cut, cause the courses are easier to build.

Used to race duel slalom back in the day, then 4X. Honestly find both to be the most entertaining for spectators and racers alike! Seems silly to do away with it. Kudos to the 4X alliance!
