2011 US Open DH Qualifying Results

May 28, 2011
by Ian Hylands
Today was downhill qualifying at the US Open, and it was an exciting day. Andrew Neethling won the Open last year, and just to prove that he's in to win it again this year he went out and qualified first, beating out Gee Atherton and Aaron Gwin, 2nd and 3rd respectively. In the women's event the biggest news was Jill Kintner deciding to race. After Bryn's crash at Plattekill where he broke his arm and femur Jill spent most of the week in the hospital with him. She came to the open to race but seemed to have almost decided not to race DH, skipping practice the first two days. Scott Sharples came out to lend a coaching hand though, and today Jill did a few practice runs and ended up qualifying first ahead of Melissa Buhl and Jacquie Harmony.

The weather today was pretty amazing, hot and humid again, but with the occasional clouds and even more occasional cool breeze, so no stories there, tomorrow's forecast is for mostly sunny with the slightest chance of a shower in the afternoon...

The rocks claimed a few victims today, most notably Neko Mulally who flatted in the upper rock gardens but was still giving it 110% until his tube ended up tightly wrapped around his axle. He had to carry his bike down the last part of the course and had the slowest time of the day. Neko won at Highland two weeks ago but crashed at Plattekill last weekend and had hoped to do well here and redeem himself.

Lauren Daney crashed in practice hitting her head pretty hard. She chose not to ride in qualifying this afternoon.
