No Stone Left Unturned - Val Di Sole World Cup Practice

Jun 14, 2013
by Nathan Hughes
Fast cars, spicy meatballs and uncompromising terrain for mountain biking... Surely the hallmarks of the Italian nation. Today riders went to war on a course that didn't stand still for two minutes. They were flying and so were the pine needles. That and a cavalcade of big round stones, set on their way by dented rims and the stumps of mech-hangers gone by. Racers were under more pressure than ever to get to grips with the ever-changing face of the beast in time for qualifications- already upon them tomorrow. Many looked to be on fine form section by section, but Val di Sole is no place for a win from anyone but the most consistently dialled-in racer.

Matt Simmonds could have well been on the podium in Fort William had it not been for a wheel wreck. He qualified extremely well - and he didn't have a chain guide or chain for most of that run. He's looking quick again this week and blasting out runs with Sam Hill.

Sam's looking fast, however he had a quick excursion through the tape early this morning, no doubt loaming-up his pretty kit a little. Don't worry, it won't cost extra in the auction.

Brook MacDonald may be untouchable this week. He's looking ludicrously fast already and it's only day one. It's a good thing though, as the new practice schedule is extremely short.

...
Saturday morning at the Post Office... The alterations to the practice and race formats have seen less time on track and more time leaning. And timed training just got cancelled.

Roosty goodness courtesy of Andrew Neethling. As predicted as the pine needles were scoured off the track the loamy dirt started offering all kinds of roost opportunities. Steve Smith evidently hit one corner hard enough to feel the roost smacking the back of his helmet.

It s all about line choice in the rock garden. There definitely IS a main line but when 312 riders storm the course lines change. The rock garden in particular saw some evolution as a pair of bomb holes developed below the stump dead center of the frame--the main line. Riders like Ragot were quick to finesse a rock rider s right of hte stump to skip over the bombholes.

Post practice compression tights walk to sort lines. Smart riders were on the track the second practice was over to see how the lines were evolving. The loose duff was getting pushed around in practice allowing more rocks and roots to emerge and a few multiple guess lines to emerge.

If Hill finally gets a win again I'm going to have the little fan boy in me come out. Flat pedals, inside line, and go faster when in doubt. True DH'r.
  • 7 3
Errr I meant the fanboys who jumped on Gwin's bandwagon only to trash him and move on after last weekend. Sam hill is the king. But I sincerely hope Gwin crushes it this weekend.
  • 8 1
Remember Gwin cracked 8 seconds off number two last year on this track....he's got bike and stuff all different but 8 seconds are still scary... We'll see him in top 5 I think! At least!! Smile

Pinkbike, I very much like your coverage of this event. Great photographs, great captions. I appreciate your positive attitude to any rider. They deserve it, absolutely.

Didn't hear or see much about Gwin at Ft. William. Is he waiting to let the dogs out or something?
  • 15 2
think he won by so much last year he wanted to give the rest a head start to make it more interesting. the guy even won the series with a race to spare.

 Can't agree with Hermit185 more
  • 2 0
Haha got that right boys! Prediction of her to win on sun!!
  • 7 1
Vital is reporting that Gwin just decided to switch to a large frame. If that's true, he must not be feeling very good on the bike. Crazy.
  • 4 2
Why don't you ask him yourself. Or we can wait until qualifies when he silences everyone!
  • 3 0
I would love to ask him myself. Can you give me his #?

He qualified 2nd, and I hope he does well. It'll turn this into a very exciting beginning to the season. If he continues to do poorly, it'll just be sad. But you can't deny that if someone is changing bike sizes in the middle of things like this, something's ain't right.

I think fort william was a revelation for him. He realized a demo doesn't fit like a session on wc tracks. Wonder what size he rode in the bc cup race he won?
  • 2 1
Btw, his phone number is 1800- HOT-SHIT.
  • 7 2
Sam's got this! the track looks exactly like the ones we have back here in West Aus!

 Gwins Pissed
  • 2 1
I agree remember how much of a gap he put between him and second place her last season, and that was because he got 2nd in South Africa!!
  • 1 0
That last photo with the glare off his helmet, eyes focused, dirt flying would make for a nice POD.
  • 2 0
Beast of a course - more traditional gnarly mountain biking as opposed to the mx track style so many courses seem to have now. Should be a good watch for sure.
  • 3 0
How Cedric Gracia is feeling after one year of his injury there in Val D' Sole?
  • 2 1
 Hope: 1. Hill, 2. Bulldog, 3. Gee, 4. Minnaar, 5. Hart, 6.Gwin
Wish: 1. Fairclough, 2. Hill, 3. Hart, 4. Gee, 5. Simmons

Most probably: 1. Bulldog, 2. Gee, 3. Minnaar, 4. Gwin, 5. Hill....
  • 3 0
THIS IS GOING TOO BE INSANE!!!

This is going to be a great race, pro's dropping bombs

Why are Greg and Ratboy on Trail bikes in the Gondola line? Just curious.
  • 1 0
According to another website Gwinn is going to try a frame size L as opposed to a M slacker head angle?
  • 1 0
Probably more stability, the demo feels a bit cramped. At least I feel so on the newer demos.

The question mark is: in 9 months riding a Demo for training, he never realized he needed/liked the bigger size?
  • 2 0
Come on Gwin, let's put all the haters to bed.
