Video: Day Tripping With Logan Peat and Josh Bryceland

Jan 10, 2014
by Mike Kazimer

Santa Cruz Jackal from Santa Cruz Bicycles on Vimeo.

When Logan Peat and Josh Bryceland rolled into Santa Cruz on their Jackals, Santa Cruz Bicycles rolled up in a 1949 GM 4101 Union Pacific Streamliner to show them around.

Still using its original super-charged two-stroke straight-six Detroit Diesel power plant connected to a Spicer 4-speed manual transmission, the "Crazy Train" is the last running coach of ten, made for ferrying passengers from Union Pacific's Los Angeles terminal in the fifties and sixties.

Is it hard to manual? Cause after that I need to learn how.
  • 7 1
ive been told its not hard but, I have yet to learn it, ma b we can take lessons lmao,
  • 12 1
It's hard if you're over the age of 25 and haven't learned yet.

new year resolution: learn to manual. I may be 40, but I ain't dead.
  • 9 0
I'm with you, Conv3rt! This is the year! It's been on my list for while.. just have not focused on it.. kinda of like riding 'switch' on a snowboard.. never really gotten around to it..
  • 4 4
My manuals are about 2 seconds, enough to get over a rock and my wheelies last about 5 feet LOL.. but I remenber being 16 on my bmx bike and riding wheelies down the street. WTF happened to me!!! I guess Seraph is right... I'm going on 29..
  • 7 0
I can manual on the trail when I need to. But my street manuals are pathetic.
  • 5 0
haha I so need to learn to manual again, I forgot how to a few years ago, Ratboy's manuals are of the chain!
  • 2 0
I can relate to both of those shrockie. I been boarding for years and still suck at riding switch. It would have helped being efficient at it today in the powder to give my back leg a rest..

Hey how about manuals on a snowboard? Forget it, for me.. Can't do it.. On the steeps, ya i can but on the flats..nope..

is all about finding that sweetspot, where you can pivot over your rear axle.
  • 7 0
Do it boys, im 40 and i can manual my malice - operator is a little harder but can manual that, its taken a while and bear in mind its something you have to persevere with. dillonchamberlain is right, find that sweet spot. but remember to push with your legs dont just yank up on the bars, that'll put you in an unbalanced position. Just watch on the video how low they are and how straight their legs are. put your ass over the axle and push with your legs - and dont let anyone tell you youre too old, its just a number boyz

You just need loads of time on your bike, preferably on flattish smooth ground. If you cycle to work/school in a flattish town on your jump bike/bmx that is the perfect way to get in daily practice. That's how I learned.
  • 4 0
I'd give my left nut to be able to manual. Do longer legs help, because mine are dead short. I'm 47 and I'll never stop trying, it looks smart!
  • 3 0
I'm not tall either at 5ft8 so height has nothing to do with it. I learned mid 20's while away at Uni and cycling everywhere across town for class and work. I cycle to work still now and always popping manuals every chance I get. It is the most fun thing to do on a bike.

36, 5'5 and just started MTB'ing a year ago..... dont let age/height be a deterrrent... Took me about an afternoon to figure out manuals... Expect to fall... Learn how to loop out... Then become friends with your back brakes! Dont get me wrong, i probably cant manual as well as these guys but then again I ride less than a weekend warrior but I can easily manual 10-15+ ft. Just got to be willing to leave your comfort zone... Once you learn how to manual... Should be able to manual most bikes. I can manual both my 26/29 just as easy even though they both sport longer stays/wheelbase which most will say is harder to manual. Just look at Andreu Lecondeguy... Dude sits about 5'3 and rides like a boss and slays everything!

An afternoon??? Dude I feel even more frustrated now☺!

Yes... it's not that bad... lots of vids/how to's on the interwebs... key for me was proper cockpit setup. Riser bar/short stem (50mm)... play around with your setup to find something that's comfy for you. Regardless, I find myself more gravity oriented so this setup works well for me anyways.

Two major errors here: First - The Lane is going off - they should have hit some waves. Second, Josh Ratboy Bryceland should have met Jason Ratboy Collins - a well-known Santa Cruz local surfer. Two phenomenal athletes.
  • 1 0
Lol, Jason and I used to surf and fish together all the time....
