Probly use Twixtor wich is a pack that can be added to most Editing softwares to create slomo. It's not perfect because it creates new images to render the video to a normal frame rate but sometimes not everything moves. If you look in the Kona operator video the spokes do't spin....
  • 16 1
yeah, that was trippy looking! Thanks for the late-night edit to bring this to our screens for Monday AM! Big wheels seem to be working on smoother, pedaly tracks, eh?
  • 44 1
It's not twixtor. The frame rate of the camera matched up with the rate at which the knobs on the tire pass by, making it look like it is not spinning. Probably 96 frames per second and 96 knobs per second. You see the same kind of thing in car commercials where the wheel looks like it speeds up, stops, and then appears to spin backwards.
  • 6 1
I don't think that is an editing artifact. It's the frame rate coincidentally matching the rotational rate of the knobbies like the first post intimates... it's like moving your arms fast in a strobe light - it can look stationary if you match the "blink" rate of the light (frames per second in this case).

BTW - I was more impressed with the slow-mo segment right before that of Lopes mashing hard off the table!

 Well spotted sir!

thinkbike - yes, there was some great footage of a lot of techniques there.

the flex on that carbon yeti! yeeouch

Why in the world would someone wear slippers in a downhill race? I'm not the smartest guy in the world, but that seems like a great way to lose feet. I must say they matched his purple jumpsuit very well though.

... getting attacked by his bike ... it's like "Crash me bitch ... take that! HI-YA!! I'll kick ya in the head."

Ya, I definitely think he did it wrong. Absolutely fantastic vid!

Wow! What a great edit. I can't believe you guys put that together so quickly cuz I know that was a lot of work. Great coverage in general of Sea Otter. Fun to see guys shredding trail bikes! I can't believe anyone would choose a DH bike on that track. The California sun looks nice!
  • 1 0
Completely agree! That's a course for a six inch bike.
  • 15 0
Did you see the fox 40s flex on that crash

I think you meant to say, "26" wheels are dead."
  • 10 3
Not on real dh tracks bro
  • 9 7
Said the Neanderthal who still thought the world was flat.

A few short years ago everyone was running this race on full-on DH bikes. Then as AM bikes became more capable, they were proven to be faster on this track than a DH bike.

Even as recently as a year ago, it would have been absurd to say that someone would win this race on a 29er. Now guys are running 29ers on this track that can outrun almost anything. Sea Otter is a perfect example of the advancement of the mountain bike.

I'm not saying a 29er will be winning any of the tougher World Cup tracks as the trade offs in geometry/wheel strength/weight/etc. may not make it feasible. But, with the advancement of frame designs around the 650b wheelsize, if you can't figure out how this is all going to work out in the future...I can't help you.
  • 6 3
^LOL. Yes, Sea Otter has always been a great proving grounds for what equipment will work on the actual world cup circut.... said no one ever.

They'll run whatever works best. Watch 650bs at S.A. and 26" at other rounds, by the same guys.
  • 6 7
@atrokz...sorry, I must have missed the part where I said Sea Otter was a proving ground for the world cup circuit??

You may be the most hardcore rider on earth with a World Cup track in your backyard that you ride everyday, but I for one ride stuff that more closely resembles Sea Otter than any World Cup DH track on a daily basis.

"They'll run whatever works best." - No shit Sherlock. I read that Gwin tested 3 different bikes during practice at Sea Otter and decided the Enduro 29 was the fastest option. That's exactly the point...there are so many amazingly capable bikes out there to choose from. The advancements made in Trail/AM bikes in just a few shorts years are astonishing.

You are just another perfect example of someone who just doesn't get it. The bikes we get to ride these days are incredible. We have access to 28lb, 29er trail bikes that are just as capable as downhill bikes from a few years ago...this stuff is amazing. 650b downhill bikes with 8" of travel and burly wheels and tires.

And yet there are still people like you clinging to the past b/c you can't understand all the changes that are taking place around you.
  • 6 5
I wrote nothing that could intelligibly be extrapolated into what you claim I think or am.

If mental gymnastics were a sport, you’d be the king at jumping to conclusions.

You said “Sea Otter is a perfect example of the advancement of the mountain bike”. It isn’t, and that comment is what’s laugh worthy. If anything, sea otter is a perfect example of the lamest race that attracts the greatest pros, and has been proven, by past winners and their steeds (from 4x bikes to DH rigs), to have far less to do with equipment and more to do with the horse. The fact that a 26” bike was essentially tied (.01 seconds is about .5” distance) for first and various rides (a 4x bike, 29", 650b, full on 26" DH bike, etc) were all within a few seconds exemplifies and backs up the fact that it’s rider over equipment here. So no, sea otter proves nothing about the advancement of bikes.

You’re right in every other respect though, bikes ARE advacing in great ways, but sea otter isn't what proves it. But hey, maybe we're just all neanderthals, mr cro magnon.....
  • 4 1
But ya.....26" wheels are a long way from dead lol.
  • 2 3
No, they are because a pro won sea otter on a 29" trail bike, bro.
  • 5 5
I may have extrapolated a little bit past the realm of plausibility based on what you posted...but all you 26" for life guys are the same.

But, Sea Otter is a PERFECT example of the advancement of the mountain bike.

A few years ago, everyone raced it on full-on DH bikes b/c that is what everyone thought you needed to handle the track.

Then, all of a sudden 6" travel AM bikes started advancing at a rapid pace with slack angles, through axles, better forks, tires, wheels, etc, etc, etc. and proved that not only could they handle the course, they were probably faster.

THEN, as little as a year ago it would have absurd to claim that someone would win this race on a 29er...

THEN, 650b DH bikes started winning all the world cup DH races....

THEN, The Specialized Enduro 29 was deemed to be so capable, that the UCI mandated it's exlusive use in ALL categories of mountain bike racing.

THEN, The UCI trained a monkey to ride a bike. The monkey then went on to win the 2016 XC, ENDURO, & DH World Cup series all on the same bike!!!

THEN...oh wait, I may have been extrapolating again.
  • 4 2
The course was always winable on a non DH bike because it's not really a DH course. They just started using trail bikes as they advanced and could handle speeds with slacker angles. The fact that it's so close between a big DH bike (minnar) and the winning ride goes to show it's got nothing to do with technology and all to do with the rider. I would easily believe that an enduro 29er can win sea otter. It's a very, very tame track!

The fact that you ass-ume I'm a '26 for life guy' is a little absurd. you have no idea I have ridden and support all bikes. I own 700c CX bikes, road bikes, and I'm making a 650B Ti Xc hardtail. I'm a 'bike for life' kinda guy, actually. 26" wheels aren't dead. There's room for everything as you'll see in this upcomign season Wink
  • 3 4
Nice edit on your comment there atrokz. If you can't figure out why the fact that DH bikes, AM bikes, 4X bikes, XC bikes all being able to compete on the same course...and be within seconds of each other is an amazing example of how advanced mountain bikes are...I, nor anyone else can help you.
  • 3 6
@atrockz...you are literally making my point for me. You are absolutley correct that riders started using trail bikes as they became more advanced and capable, thank you again for making my point.

It literally has EVERYTHING to do with the technology. A few years ago, on a pedally DH track a guy like Minaar would have a huge advantage over more technical and less powerful riders. What do you think would have happened if Minnaar was on a 650b Bronson or a Tallboy LTc? I bet he's asking himself the same thing.

Do you really not understand what's going on here?

We are experiencing an incredible change in the industry with advancements that literally let every rider find a bike that perfectly suits his/her abilities, terrain, and riding style.
  • 3 1
 For Enduro 29" > 26"/650b
  • 10 3

holy crap, "If mental gymnastics were a sport, you’d be the king at jumping to conclusions." well said!
i am for any wheel size you want to ride, won't find me getting defensive about 29", 26", or 650b" (err?). but to say "Now guys are running 29ers on this track that can outrun almost anything." well then, why was bryn not on the shinobi, why was graves not on the sb-95, why was smith not on the atlas, why was lars not on the covert29, etc. etc. nothing definitive can be said about which wheel size is fastest on this course. at best, we can believe that trail (am, enduro, wtf ever) bikes might be faster than dh bikes on this particular course.
  • 1 0
wait till next year when more people are riding this track on 29rs...

@donch15 please change your nickname to douche... it suits you!!!
  • 2 1
@robbienroll...I see what you did there, "douche" instead of "donch". Very clever...you're clearly very well educated.

That really hurt my feelings...I think I may just go have a good cry. I might quit mountain biking too...thank you for ruining my life.

Don't do that man... otherwise I won't get to read your humble comments!!! By the way, I typed Humble on google and I saw your name there in first place! Congratulations man!!! You are the one... and problably Faster than me... way faster than us all!!! Bye man... Till the next round!!!
  • 3 2
You had to look up the definition of the word, "humble"?
  • 8 0
29er trail bike wins another "dh" race. I guess that means all us mericans either need new bikes or new tracks
  • 25 1
The top 20 is amazing and a testament to what an amazing thing it is to have such capable bikes to ride. The top 20 was almost a 50/50 split...(11), "Big Wheeled" bikes and (9), 26" bikes. It's just a perfect example of how lucky we are to have such a range of amazing bikes to choose from.

The variety of bikes in the top 20 is a testament to fact that anyone can find a bike that almost perfectly suits their skills, riding style, and terrain.

A few short years ago, this race was run almost exclusivley on full-on DH bikes. Then a couple years ago, the most capable AM bikes started to be faster than the DH bikes...now we've got incredibly capable 29er's and 650b bikes that can outrun almost anything. As a full-on DH course, Sea Otter might not stack up. But, as a proving ground for the bikes that the majority of mountain bikers ride...it's an amazing testament to the evolution of the mountain bike.

With such amazingly capable bikes to choose from...the future of mountain biking looks bright.

Added to favourites. I should be getting used to being part of the riding dusty trails, been dry in England for weeks !!!

As for the edit, Slow music and slow motion combined with a mixture of Dh bikes to trail/enduro bikes is just awesome to watch.

I went to sea otter (Fort Ord) from Alaska and rode solid for two weeks this winter. Stayed at raceway campground and brought Transition Covert and TransAM (hardtail). Those are fun hardtail trails all the way. Being able to feel the sand breaking loose lets you keep speed in line and have fun. Ford Ord on 160mm was like a Class 1 rapids in a raft compared to a kayak. As my 10 year old said, "Dad, where are the mountain bike trails? All I see is cowpatties and grass". Ford Ord is a great place for events and XC but even folks in Santa Cruz, 45 minutes away, don't ride there cause its lame from a AM, DH perspective.
  • 1 0
I was stationed at Fort Ord back in the day when I was in the army. Sucky riding there even in the late 80's on an FR (fully rigid) bike with wide 1.9" tires... preferred to take the Ninja to Laguna Seca, and the mtb to Santa Cruz. (bike was a Wicked Fat Chance, sweet ride for the time... oh the memories!)
  • 1 0
Fort Ord is great fun with flowy singletrack hardpack oak grasslands. Great for girlfriend rides. Just kinda lame outside the XC discipline.
  • 7 2
Hmmm I noticed a few DH bikes, but I couldn't seem to locate the DH track....

Unbelievably well put together (especially considering the time). This was an amazing video to watch after work. Made me go out and ride. My legs were on fire the whole time. Been a while since I pushed that hard.

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought skin suits were banned from DH competition, but @ 41 seconds, it looks like the rider is wearing one...
  • 1 0
Smiled when I saw him eat dirt, that's what you get ;-)
  • 2 0
I think that might only be for UCI races? Sea Otter isn't really on any sort of larger DH schedule
  • 3 0
Only if you're a UCI licensed professional and it's a UCI sanctioned race or race sanctioned by the host countries National cycling body, in this case USAC. So, no, if that guy was racing pro, he shouldn't be wearing a skinsuit. But looks like he crashed out anyway, no need to worry about a dq... Skinsuits RULE, btw...!

Dh with a slow song about sweaters on a sunny fast course?
A bit anti climatic aye.

Damn, Cam Cole sure didn't get much exposure at Sea Otter despite two 3rds.
  • 6 0
He got a cuddle from Gwin though.

He has a great start to the season with a number of wins/podiums. I think he will surprise a few during this seasons world cup. Go the KIWIS!!!!

It would be rad to see a list of who was riding what bike for the race. Any one know the rider and the bike at 2:13ish? red santa cruz.....?

i was wondering about that one...looks like either a blur TRc or LTc

Graves and Cole representing for Yeti. Surprised more hasn't been made of this. Especially after Graves rubbish form last year. Cole had a pretty average off season in NZ so has stepped it up heaps.
  • 1 0
Cam had a great off season in NZ. Raced in lots of local races, even cleaned up in the Lyttelton Urban DH - no easy job. DH or Enduro the man is freaking fast and so smooth it should be illegal. This season is going to be epic, can't wait!

The photo that is posted why the heck is the rider leaning so far back on what appears to be flat? Sooner or later they are going to regulate what type of wheels you can ride for each race event. Just wait and see.

Does Minnar always have a sour puss if he doesn't win? I think the only time I've seen him smile was when he won worlds last year.
  • 2 0
Why does someone have to say this in every podium a shot about someone who didn't win? None of these guys like losing so if they aren't pumped to come in 4th or whatever who cares if they aren't pumped. I'm sure greg, gee, steve, hill, and the like are getting pretty tired/frustrated seeing Gwin at the top every time. Props to Gwin - he's killing it, but if the rest of the podium isn't pumped to be 1st of the losers I don't blame them.

He could have been smiling for 70% of the time - it's just a split second snapshot photo. It's Gee that doesn't smile. Regardless, bfd.

It is written SWORKS on the downtube.. so I believe it is not a COMP 29er... that's weird, cos the SWORKS version comes with 26 wheels. Go figure!!!

  • 2 0
I don't know genius... what I know is that looking at specialized website, I didn't find a model that has a SWorks stick on its frame and a 29 wheel at the same time... that's all! And about the thong, I don't know if this is a canadian thing, but we (brazilian males) don't use thongs, only our women! But I respect if that is the standard in the canadian beaches!!! Just please, don't send pictures!!! Have fun!!!
  • 4 1
Its one of Aaron Gwins's race bikes. I doubt it a normal model they offer, and prob something awesome they made for him full of magic and lion tears. Also LOL at Gwin riding a COMP model.
  • 1 2
whats so funny about Gwin riding a Comp model? the only Dual 29'' Specialized now offers is a so called Comp... Hey don't get me wrong, no pun intended, I know pretty close to nothing about specialized having owned 0 Speches in the last 20 years of riding. Is Comp considered their entry level? Whats so terrible about Comp?
  • 1 0
Comp is their entry level. S-Works is the top-end. The enduro 29'r is new this year and is likely a limited release, hence the comp only offering right now (although the S-works carbon 29'r enduro is obviously out of the bag).
  • 2 0
Anyway... now we all know (including ME) that Gwin's bike is a ENDURO SWORKS 29er. That's all I wanted to know. We don't need to stard a 3rd world war because of that. Have a nice evening everybody. It doesn't matter if you have a SWORKS 29er, COMP 29er, Trek Session, Kona Operator Carbon or whatever... I wish that to you too!!! G'night!!
