What a life lesson ... He finally got back to his 2007 level.
  • + 79
... and you are on his 2001 level!
  • + 23
 After all he is French...

Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system! Help! Help! I'm being repressed!

 Super awesome.
  • + 12
And DrJean, I did laugh out loud at that comment, but I hope you were joking.

I was obviously being sarcastic but on a more serious note, I realized that, for about a year, several notorious bike companies have tried to polish their image by advertising their charity on the web. The means they use are either (1) to gift an average-level apparently pitiable fellow with their brand new product, (2) to sponsor a trip to countries in development with several MTB stars that shape with locals and lend their bikes to children in front of the camera or (3) to report on their sport ambassador when they visit their outsourced manufacturers in Asia. I am actually shocked by the political correctness of the comments that seem to endorse a demagogic marketing strategy.
Political correctness, demagogy and marketing rule.

 Lighten up.

"Dr" this guy did something you would never be able to do, that is to inspire people with his actions. So cheer up for Filipe and Miguel for the free video and cool story.
  • + 2
Taking roost to a new level. He just doesn't brake in those corners! Even on the supermarket bike!!!
  • + 3
although the incessant and obvious marketing ploy gets me, its not the point. the point is this guy rocked a freakin' walmart bike and has progressed quite a bit, I mean seriously throw in a few drifts and a few tricks and you got someone to keep up with the likes of kovarik, if he couldn't already. how is that not impressive?
  • - 1
Why isn't he racing world cup?
  • + 1
He's a decent shredder - but far, far away from World Cup skills.
  • + 0
Another crazy frenchman... it'll cool if CG could give him some lesson... You shred dude!! Awesome!
  • + 123
I wonder how much this guy cares about the 26 / 27.5 / 29 debate? $10 bucks says he could care less and just wants to ride. Thus making him cooler than 90% of the mtb population.

 No shit!

So pleased the bike went to a rider who deserved it and thats its still being used well! still props to giant for giving out a whole build instead of just the frame though!
  • + 21
That was insanely cool how they decided to change the prize to a full build for this dude. This is def. one of the best stories I've seen come out of this site.
  • + 4
Gotta love those type of contests. At least you know it's a guy who not only wanted it but needed and deserved it who won it, instead of some anonymous person that never rode a bike who randomly entered his name to win it and put it on ebay.
  • + 82
Gotta give it to the supermarket bike ... it took some abuse.
  • + 32
Very impressive effort by the supermarket bike. Amazing it held out for so long!
  • + 4
Yep, tail whipping those road gaps on the supermarket bike does take balls. Especially considering the supermarket bike was not even constructued to take 10% of the abuse he gave it.
  • + 10
 I didn't see any tailwhips.
  • + 3
Maybe supermarket bikes are as bad as most think
=
  • + 7
yeah this supermarket bike took shit, take notes hyperz lol
  • + 1
Yeah seriously, that makes you ponder how much "stiffness" or whatever lastest tech you really "need" to enjoy riding a bike. If you notice in the video, his "dual crown" fork on the supermarket bike seems to use as much travel as a rigid...
  • + 3
This video kind of changed my opinion on supermarket bikes. I always dismissed them as being shit-pieces and not real bikes. Was never sure why they existed - but if bikes weren't available that price-point Filipe over here wouldn't have anything to ride at all. The existence of these £50 supermarket bikes allow people like Filipe (who wouldn't otherwise have a bike) to ride and to progress... and progress he did...

Makes you realize what a jammy bunch of f*cks your spoiled friends are when they can't do half the shit he was doing on their fancy-pants bikes. Appreciate what you have and don't be too quick to talk shit on cheap bikes.

Salute
  • + 1
Yeah, that's why people are stoked with cam zink's hyper walmart bike. It might not be what we're used to but it gives a chance to kids with pretty much inexistant budgets to ride a bike.
  • + 16
Glad to see that he didn't give up all of those years riding the supermarket bike, and it really paid off because now he's got a killer ride and some serious skills. The sport needs more riders like him, not kids that buy the best gear out there then only ride for a season and give up. I have a huge amount of respect for this guy
  • + 17
Anyone else notice how much better his trails got, not only is he a ripper he's also a digger. His trail building skills improved just as much as his riding did!!!
  • + 16
Best example for "It's the rider, not the bike". Very inspiring! We should all be thankful for what we have and that we are able to be part of such an amazing sport and care less about equipment.
  • + 9
As I watched the first video, I kept thinking, this guy is riding the same bike every year, but it looks like cheap supermarket special.. I assumed it was just an old Univega or something.. Then at the end I was not surprised to see the headtube rip clean off, to be honest I'm amazed it lasted as long as it did! Obviously the second video clarified the fact it WAS a supermarket special, and not even a maintained one which makes the riding even more impressive.

You clearly see the progression in riding throughout the years, and it's pretty cool to see. Going from the 'special' to the Glory must have been a revolution! Completely amazing, and has to be one of the most deserved winner of all.. Though I'm thinking a some kind of maintenance deal would have been useful too!

As someone said above, seeing youngsters these days, who live in much more financially stable countries, getting mummy and daddy to fund their 4k new bike only to not respect it, not have earn't it, and not use it even nearly as much as this guy... Well, it's sad isn't it.? This guy got a supermarket special and still was excited like it was Christmas everyday, kids today don't even know they are born!
  • + 5
Saying all kids these days are spoiled and get brand new 4 k bikes is total BS. There were kids at the time the guy in the video grew up that got brand new bikes too. The sports more popular so you see more of that now. Anyway I think your attitude toward youth these days BS. A lot of kids like me work for there bikes.
  • + 3
Well, try living in a third world country like me. We cant even afford an ex
  • + 8
We cant even afford a downhill bike. And thats coming from a post-graduate chemist who works 3 part time jobs. Just ride and be grateful
  • + 3
Well said lots of youth work to ride
  • + 0
when i was 16 i worked every weekend for 3 years just to be able to ride once or twice a month. even before i had a job, still had a paper round to buy my first 'downhill' bike.
  • + 12
GIANT move from giant!! great story!!
  • + 8
That bike went to the very right guy. Hope you enjoy it and start competing. You have some talent mate.
  • + 9
 90% rider - 10% bike
  • + 3
wow dude, never again can I blame my riding limitations on my gear and wholeheartedly believe what I'm saying....I ride 4 times a week on my $3,000 bike and I'm maaybe as fast as he was on the supermarket bike, and definitely not whipping over road gaps... mad props.
  • + 7
 Send him someone to race!!
  • + 3
 Send him somewhere to race
  • + 2
i think all those years riding on that supermarket bike actually helped him in the long run develop fundamental bike skills and not just rely on suspension. Now that he has a dh bike he can combine his skills with a good bike and shred
  • + 2
It's actually unreal how much more confidence more travel gives you though, you can tell after he gets the Glory he gains a bit more confidence, still, riding a shitty flyer like the old bike like that takes a lot of confidence as it is haha!
  • + 3
 Question.
Just how many super market bikes did you go through in producing this video?
Congrat's on winning.
Keep railing them burms.
  • + 1
I think everybody agrees that you deseved to win... But the awesome riding is the mose important thing about this video. No mater on what bike. I hope one day I will see you competing with other great dudes. Ride and have fun.
  • + 6
 Glad he won! Big Grin
  • + 3
Mad skills Filipe! Any chance of you picking up a ride sponsor for racing? You seem to really shred. Still rooting for you!
  • + 4
The bike should have came with some sponsors, this guy is going places.
  • + 1
Great inspiration, great rider...I feel really bad for complaining and blaming my "old 2000$+ 2010 bike", and how I would ride a lot better if I had these new gear....

Parabens Filipe
  • + 3
Someone get this guy a local DH race. He's developed a serious set of skills commanding that sh*t piece around!
  • + 2
So awesome to see his riding progress over the years. Nice job man! You deserve it! Keep pushing your limits and you'll keep getting better and better!
  • + 0
Yes. I liked how his head-bobble lessened over the years. He truly did progress a lot over five years. He obviously has a natural talent. And now he's flat-landing the road gap - better move the lip back Filipe!
  • + 3
hey kurt sorge this guy will be a good riding mate for you, he can be good for giant poplarity too

Hey DrJean.. Go fuck a goat.. i bet your level is way worst than me taking a shit on my toilet !!!
  • + 4
I understand that you were so moved by the video and could not understand how someone can react so indifferently to it as DrJean did, but there is no need to be insulting. DrJean clearly explained his point of view, perhaps with sarcasms but without any disrespect. I suggest you do the same.

Personally I found your contribution quite poor. First I doubt that your recommendation (“Go f… a goat”) would help DrJean much in becoming more “politically correct”. Finally your comparison between his biking skills and you s(h)itting in toilets should be backed up a bit more scientifically. On which ground can you make such a statement and bet on it? You should provide evidences here.

Anyway, if that’s really what you wanted to share, and that you wish to maintain your assertion but just don’t know how to be polite, here’s a suggestion:
“Hey DrJean.. I’d like to suggest you to find yourself a goat partner.. and also i am ready to bet that when I go to the toilets, it goes down faster than you with your bike!“
  • + 3
 With you there bro
Express but dont insult. Actually he (Dr jean) has got a point, hence its called "capitalism". "Use anyone for your favor either by taking them to the top or draging low beneath ur feet; if its gonna have an impact then its gonna have a profit" Wink

 you welcome Smile
