It was pretty warm at Windham; many racers were wearing ice vests in an effort to keep core temps low until the big dance.
Emily Batty had the cool shade of an umbrella boy as well as ice packs down her jersey.

Georgia Gould opened up the Women's race with a massive can of whoop-ass; leading the field by as much as 60 seconds. Sadly, Gould punctured descending on the final lap. She stopped, applied a C02 cartridge to re-inflate her tire, but was forced to run the final climb up into the finish straight...
Only to be passed by her two teammates. That makes it two races in row that bad luck has kicked Gould on the home stretch. And two races that teammate Catharine Pendrel has taken at the closing moments. Some people may view that as poor team dynamics, but for Catharine, it was playing it safe. Anything could have happened at MSA last week--Gould was fading rapidly. And this week, by taking the win, Pendrel sealed up the overall.
It was a heartbreaker for everyone. Even Pendrel admitted that this was not a win she relished.
Elite Men: Fumic out front. Only to have a mechanical.
Kulhavy suffered a physical mechanical: the runs. He was forced to pull out of the race two laps in.
With many of the main threats unable to challenge Stander for one reason or another (Jose Hermida tore a pedal off the spindle on lap one), Stander opted to take the reins firmly in hand. He even had time to do a proper zip up on the jersey as he entered the finishing straight.
Max Plaxton was not keen on the heat and simply did not have the legs he showed last week at St Anne, coming home seventh.
Geoff Kabush was looking more on form here than he did last week. Olympic training taking over? Or just Geoff being Geoff--he's always raced better in North America than he has in Europe. However, Plaxton edged Kabush out by 5 seconds.
Todd Wells locked down fourth place today, showing a return to last year's ability to be a constant podium threat. Wells was patient, and worked his way up the entire race, and then fended off a charging Matthias Fluckiger in the closing lap to secure his position.
Sergio Mantecon Gutierrez of Spain showing appreciation for the fans coming out and cheering the riders on in the heat.
Marco Aurelio Fontana. Best can of Coke ever.
Adam Craig, rocking baggies and a single speed? Evidently, as his World Cup racing career winds down, AC has a few items on his tick list; racing a World Cup on a single speed was one of those things. "Yeah, it was a bit of a tall gear. 2:1 but it was tall."
What's next for Adam Craig? Enduro seems to be suiting him of late in the Oregon Enduro series. And Giant doesn't have a proper enduro racer. Might be that we see Craig swapping out lycra for baggies more often.
Women's Podium, L-R: Marie-Helene Premont (4), Katerina Nash (2), Cahtarine Pendrel (1), Georgia Gould (3), and Lea Davison (5). A full North American podium (although admittedly some big names skipped this race) and a historical team sweep with Luna going 1-2-3.
im not much on watching xc but when i tuned in to pinkbike it was the last part of the race for women's xc and seeing gould get a flat tire when she was in seeing view of the finish line was devastating for me! Not only do i think she deserves the win but she needs to be recognized as the winner in this race too!!! Well done Mrs. Gould!!
I watched the whole women's xc hoping for something exciting to happen then it did. Not the way I was hoping it would happen but it was interesting. I dident know she stopped to use a co2 canister. Pinkbike can you do a write up on one of these xc bikes? Im sure someone else aside from myself will read it.
Someone running Shimano and someone on SRAM? Or maybe a 26 setup and a 29? Weights, tires, how many tooth rings etc. double front or single. Most of these things I guess depend on the course and conditions.
Really glad you guys included the XC. It's difficult to make it look as interesting as DH but I'd say those guys are definitely more skilled than your average weekend DHer. Try bombing it down a technical descent on a carbon hardtail with 100mm travel and the seatpost all the way up, its bloody hard to go fast.
If Adam Craig goes full time enduro I think he would have more fun and get more attention than he would racing xc. Would be great for Enduro racing also.
new sam hill fivetens look awesome, good to see some more colours n styling going into them, cos lets be honest, while impacts work really really well, they do look a lil " special" dont they...
Is it just me or did a lot of people break parts in that XC race? I don't know a lot about XC racing but perhaps they are sacrificing too much to lose weight?
WTF Pinkbike.
I was happily scrolling through some sweet pics of Sam Hill shredding and before i knew it my eyes were burdened with men wearing lycra. Give us a heads up next time please. It was like accidently wandering into the gay porn section of a video store.
