World Championships 2011 - Final DH Practice

Sep 4, 2011
by Ian Hylands

With some serious downpour last night the track is looking a bit muddier and slipperier than it has been all week. Check out these shots from yesterdays practice session and then try to imagine everything wet and slippery, who's going to come out on top in these conditions? Check back in a few hours for results or watch it on Freecaster!

Aaron said he had a cruiser yesterday and was 5 seconds up. He has been doing one or 2 runs a day at most just staying fresh and having fun. He wants to work on scrubs when he gets home so he can have even more fun next year. 2012 will be interesting.

A lot of people wondered about Gee Atherton s not finishing the timed training run. The timed training run is basically a show. It doesn t count for seeding or qualifying. But you have to at least start in order to race almost like a protected plate. Gee rolled the start and pulled off as he d banged his head pretty hard the day before and wanted to take it easy.

It s kind of odd riders have to race in national kit but that doesn t mean that teams don t all of the sudden quit training together. Danny Hart with the same line as Needles.

This was definitely the faster but much riskier line and NOT one that will likely go in the wet. But partially healed shoulder or not Sam Hill is here to play hard ball.

From Leslie Pitts:
‘Twas the night before Worlds
And in the hotels
Not a racer was stirring
Not even Mitch Delfs

The knee pads were hung
On the balconies with care
In hope that the stench
Would float away on the night air

The racers were nestled all snug in their beds
While visions of the podium danced in their heads
Mechanics were turning the bolts one last time
Wheels trued, brakes ready to stop on a dime

When down in the garage there arose such a clatter
The wrenches wondered, what was the matter?
This wasn’t Italy, with threats of the mob
Stealing all of the bikes, what a bad karma job!

Not Whistler, either, or Mont Sainte Anne
Where the Fox truck can be opened like a tuna can
These are the Swiss, with their Swiss Army knives
That deter the worst thief, in fear of his life

Calvin, now armed with a huge pedal wrench
Was stealthily hiding behind the work bench
Calling for aid, he scared them away
All was well! Get more bikes prepped for the next day

Some racers convened in the lobby, awake
Not lucky, recovering from miscellaneous breaks
ACLs, wrists, concussions and femurs
For the race, they’d resemble a big pack of lemurs

All the tape in the world, and ice from the freezer
Could not patch up those poor old geezers
Arriving as racers, ending as spectators
On the side of the race course to become motivators

Earlier that day, massages were had
By racers whose muscles were feeling so bad
Keep those pedals turning, the PTs were told
Armed with ibuprofen and tape, competitors were bold

The course was so steep, hard to stay on top
With a good night’s rest, hearts still ready to pop
The juniors, excited to see Peaty and Hill
Minnaar, Fairclough, Blenkinsop, Fabien Barel

With the best of support, they were all in this place
Components all shiny, ready to race
Will Gwin do it again? We all wished him the Goldl
When the race is all over, war stories will be told

In just a few hours, the race will be history
The winner no longer will be such a mystery
For the rest of us waiting patiently at home
Freecaster bringing the splatter and loam

Our heros on the best the world has to offer
Beloved bikes that empty the coffers
Put to the test against the world’s top riders
Some of whom now have babies on Striders

To the gladiators ready to drop in from the start gate:
Sleep well, have fun and please stay safe
Tomorrow the biggest event will be run
The world will have a new 2011 champion

You can watch it on freecaster, that is pretty much the only way to watch it other than track side.

Ok judging by what Matti Lehikoinen just posted on facebook, "its pissing down". Even better odds for Sam Hill!
  • 2 0
Yeah but the commentator is a fucking dickhead. i have stopped watching mtb stuff on SBS because of him. he commentates like David Attenborough talking about a little harmless bird that just happily lives in the forest.

And troy takes juniors by 12 seconds!!

I just want to say this, Pinkbike should put "Add to my favorites" on every article....just sayin Smile
  • 4 1
That my friend is a bloody brilliant idea!
  • 1 0
Hehe I know right, so that you can always look back on the article you like, without having troubles searching it..... Smile

This has gotta be the most intense lead up to a world champs in a while... conditions can make for interesting results. I really wanna see Pom-Pom and Barel on the top steps!

If Troy Brosnan won the elite mens race as well, would be the mens champ and the junior champ? Big Grin
  • 1 0
 No.
  • 1 0
I don't know if the rules are the same as back then. I remember in Vail 1994 Vouilloz and Gachet were the quickest guys. Vouilloz still qualified as a junior, and I recall he opted to compete as a junior because basically he wasn't sure he could beat Gachet. As it happened, Gachet was quicker by 1/100th of a sec so it was a good decision by Nico, but the way it was reported led me to believe he had a choice. If he'd wanted to compete in the seniors he would have been permitted to, but he had to decide before the race.

Perhaps someone can clear this up. Can juniors elect to compete as seniors if they so desire?

 That poem was epic.

GWIN is bring the worlds jersey back to the states for the first time in 11 years!
  • 3 0
 Did you go to school?
  • 1 0
Yeah, we'll see what sam hill thinks about that one. because im sure he has other plans. its going to be bloody close tho!
  • 2 0
Actually I was referring to the terrible grammar.

"Gwin is bring..." is not a sentence.
  • 1 0
Gonna be a good race, good to see Hill sending it but really want to see Hart on top spot
  • 2 0
 Go on Danny Lad
  • 1 0
 I second that!
Rob said it well - "Whoever wins is definitely the best bike rider because there's no pedalling". That rules out Greg and a pile of others. Whoever can let off the brakes, let it rip and hold on to the bottom is going to take it. I'm interested to see if Gwin's got what it takes on a balls to the wall track like this. My head says yes, my heart says no. If he has a good run, I think Hill's the man to beat. I'd love to see Danny or Big Mac do well. But then it will probably rain and we'll see an unlikely winner, like Barel (go on son, last race everyone's behind you!).

Anyone else hink 15Euro is a bit steep?
  • 3 0
I gotta admit man i thought it was steep but thats how it is. If anywere near the same numbers liked biking as much as football the price would have been about 1 euro. Support the cause and buy your pass to keep coverage of the sport going for another season.
  • 3 0
15 euro isnt that much considering it has been free all season so far!
  • 1 0
I don't know, ten would have been OK. I'm a tight bastard and I don't think I can shell out 15 since I only want to watch the last twenty minutes. I can't be the only one but I'm sure the bean counters have done their sums and calculated that the optimium revenue can be achieved at 15. Anyone want to sell me their code tomorrow for 5 euro?
  • 1 0
Since when is Gee running flat pedals?
  • 1 0
A lot of the top guys can happily switch between flats and clips. They usually use clips because it's faster. Gee man obviously thinks it's going to be a mud bath if he's on flats.
  • 1 0
Hill, this track has a point named after you... All the best.
  • 2 0
 Are those Demos carbon?
  • 1 0
Sure looks like it on the close up shot of Troy Brosnans!
